Chapter 2

Legolas dreamed that night—something he had not done in a long time. The dreams had been agonizing. He had relived Haldir’s kiss again and again, in various places and situations. But the outcome was always the same. “Nay.” That word rang in is ears even after he had awakened and he could feel the loss of Haldir’s warmth and his impact with the floor as he fell from the guardian’s arms.

It was still early morning, but Legolas felt himself trembling inside and knew he would not be able to get any rest. He glanced at his lovers—they were still sound asleep—and then at the hanger on the wall. Haldir’s cloak wasn’t there and Legolas assumed he had not returned. With a sigh, he began to dress. He needed to take a walk.

Once he was outside the city, Legolas climbed the largest mallorn he could find. He spent hours in that tree, laying a sturdy, wooden limb. He often sought solace with the trees— if he concentrated hard enough he could hear them, or rather feel them speaking to him. Their spirits were wise, wiser than he. And he needed their counsel now more than ever.

Legolas could not remember the last time he had felt so confused, his emotions in a state of mayhem. He had come to ‘Lorien expecting a few weeks of fun—but never this. Haldir’s kiss had lit a flame inside him, it seemed. No other kiss had ever made him feel that way before and he wondered if, perhaps, he was in love. Of course, he had mistakenly thought himself to be in love many times before—would this time be the same? Did it even matter, since Haldir did not want him? Most importantly, why did Haldir not want him? Every other Elf did…

*Do not interfere with the natural course of things and you will get your wish.* Legolas frowned at the thought that suddenly entered his mind. He was not one to sit and wait for things to happen on their own, and doubted that such a method could ever work. Nay, he would have to devise a plan of some sort, to make Haldir regret what he had done and come begging for another chance.

The tavern was unusually packed. Legolas’ eyes darted around the place every few seconds. *Where is he?*

“You look uneasy, Legolas,” Orophin said, causing Legolas to turn. “Did something happen? Are you looking for someone?”

Legolas forced a smile. “Nay, I am alright.”

One of the Elves at the table poured the prince more wine, trying to involve him in their conversation, but the prince would quickly lose focus. He wondered why Haldir was not there, where he could be. There were many questions he wished to ask Haldir’s brothers regarding the elusive Elf, but he did not want to bring the subject up around the others. It would just have to wait until the next day.

A sudden burst of commotion made Legolas whip his head around, and the sight of the Elf who had held him in his arms not even a day ago made his heart stop. Haldir had arrived with a group of fellow wardens, and they stood by the bar, each ordering a drink.

Had Haldir not eventually made his way over to Legolas’ corner, the prince would have been satisfied. At least it would have shown that the guardian was somehow affected by what had happened the night before. But such was not his luck.

When Haldir came to their table there was nothing Legolas could find in his face that would hint that he had any regrets, and it made his stomach turn. Room was quickly made for the others, and Legolas was glad to have Rumil and Orophin move closer to him. Haldir sat down exactly opposite of the prince.

*Good. Now he can gaze upon me and wish he was in his brothers’ boots.*

Legolas made sure not to look at Haldir except quickly through the corner of his eye. As the night progressed, he slowly became increasingly intimate with Orophin. At first it was an occasional touch on the thigh or arm, and then progressed to soft kisses. As the night wore on, Legolas eventually landed on Orophin’s lap, ravaging his mouth and neck for all to see.

Most of the Elves in the tavern could not help but steal a glance every so often, as they were not used to such open display of affection. Rumil had excused himself, saying he must have had too much wine and suddenly felt ill. But Haldir…he acted as if they were not there at all. He neither looked nor avoided the sight of them. Apparently he was completely unaffected by what he saw, and it made Legolas blood boil.

“Let’s leave,” Orophin panted, his face flushed with passion.

“Aye,” agreed Legolas, “lets.”

On their way out, Legolas threw one last glance at Haldir, but the guardian did not even seem to notice they had left. Indeed, it was not Orophin he wanted to leave with, but at least Orophin’s physical resemblance to his older brother would help Legolas pretend…
