Hobbitnapped
Chapter 2
Over the next several days Ferny watched the comings and goings at Bag End. He noted that Frodo spent most of his time indoors. And when he did venture out he was never alone. “Dam!!” Ferny spat. “He’s not going to be easy to catch. He squared his chin. “Well if I have to kill one of them to get at him then so be it! Won’t be as much fun down the road but the end result will be the same.” He walked back to his little shack whistling softly to himself. Tomorrow would be the day! He fixed himself a meal of potato mash and salted pork and finished off another bottle of whiskey. Then he went to bed early. He had a busy day ahead of him. He went over the plan in his head as he drifted off to sleep.
He was up early the next morning eager to carry out his plan. He grabbed what he had prepared to take with him. A large potato sack, a couple lengths of rope and a piece of cloth for a gag, and headed toward Bag End. His plan was to try to catch Frodo alone. If he did he would take him then. If not he would grab him when he went for his evening walk, and woe be to anyone who was with him! Ferny quietly approached his hiding spot just beyond the gardens at Bag End. He had never been here this early but he didn’t mind. He would wait all day if he had to.
The front door to Bag End opened and Ferny froze. Frodo and Sam stepped out. “Now I’m just going to the market. I’ll only be gone a couple of hours.” Sam said. “Sam” Frodo laughed. “I’m a grown hobbit! It’s not like I’ve never been alone before!” “All the same” Sam said “My Gaffer is just down the lane and Rosie will be along to start cleaning out those extra rooms.” “Sam would you quit worrying and go! You’re worse than an old mother hen. I’ll be all right.” Frodo said giving Sam a little nudge toward the walk. 'Yes Sam go!' Ferny thought to himself. 'I’ll take care of Frodo.' Ferny almost laughed out loud at this thought. He couldn’t believe his luck! Frodo was going to be alone for once. This wasn’t going to be so hard after all. He watched Sam head off toward town in his little pony drawn cart.
Ferny turned his attention back toward Frodo. He seemed to be listening to something. He had his head cocked to one side with a questioning look on his face. Ferny froze, he was afraid to breath. Afraid that Frodo had discovered his hiding place. A squirrel
chattered and scrambled up a tree near the road. Frodo smiled and went back inside. As soon as the door was closed, Ferny was on the move. It was early enough and Bag End was secluded enough that Ferny did not have to worry too much about being seen. He
wanted to get his prey and be gone as quickly as possible. He knew that the fat one would be gone for at least an hour but he did not know when this Rosie was going to show up.
Ferny quietly opened the door, looked around briefly and entered the smail. He had to remain crouched over to keep from hitting his head on the rafters. Hobbit holes were not made for men. This just irritated Ferny all the more. He heard water running in a room
just up the hall. He slowly made his way toward it. When he got close enough he saw it was a kitchen. Frodo was standing at the sink with his back to Ferny looking out an open window while washing up the breakfast dishes. Ferny brought the sack he was carrying around in front of him bumping into a table as he did. He froze. “Sam is that you?” Frodo asked without turning around. “I told you I would be all right!” Ferny panicked. He grabbed a candlestick off the table and lunged toward Frodo. Just as Frodo made to turn around Ferny brought the weapon down hard on the back of Frodo’s head. Frodo felt the blinding pain and dropped the mug he had been washing. It shattered on the floor. The room spun wildly around him and he was quickly swallowed by darkness. He was unconscious before he hit the floor.
Ferny grabbed the sack he had brought with him and emptied it of its contents. He tied the gag in Frodo’s mouth so he couldn’t call out if he woke up. He then tied Frodo’s hands behind his back and bound his legs from knee to ankle. He wasn’t going to have this little runt kicking him all the way home. He then pulled the sack over Frodo’s head. It just covered his feet. Just as Ferny was picking his bundle up off the floor he heard a knock at the door. “Frodo?” A women’s voice. “Frodo are you all right?” “Dam!” Ferny cursed. He ran as best he could toward the back door knocking over a chair and upending the table. Rosie opened the door. “Frodo!!” Rosie yelled. “Frodo are you all right? What was that noise?” Rosie ran up the hall toward where she thought the noise came from. Ferny was out the back door and crouched down behind the hedge with Frodo when he heard Rosies scream come from the kitchen.
Rosie ran out the back door and looked around wildly. Then she ran off down the lane. In her panic she failed to see the tail of Fernys coat caught on the hedge. As soon as Rosie fled, Ferny got up and threw Frodo over his shoulder. Then he noticed that his coat was caught in the hedge. He gave a few yanks but it refused to break free. “Screw it!” he hissed and took out his knife and cut the coat free. Then he smacked Frodo across the back of his thighs through the sack. “Just one more thing for me to take out of your hide!” he spat. Then he turned and ran off into the woods and was out of sight in a matter of seconds.
