The Attic
A/N: I hope you readers out there know how hard the first chapter of a story is to write!!! I hope you like it! All constructive criticism is welcome. On with the story!!!!
Chapter One: The Attic
“Can you find it?”
Loren called up, but didn’t get an immediate response. Without warning, Jaxon poked her head down from the ceiling.
“Why don’t you come help me, lazybones? It’s your project, too”
Loren, looking nervous, replied “But, Jax, my allergies. Dust is the biggest one. And boy isn’t that attic dusty!”
“Oh, come on, Lori,” Jax tugged on her jacket, grinning. “If you have an attack, I can do emergency CPR. I finally passed that test.”
“You know, that scares me even worse than all the dust bunnies under your bed.” She sighed, climbing up the ladder to the attic.
“Ha Ha, very funny! It only took three tries to get it!” Jaxon tried to look mad, but failed.
“Only you, Jax, only you” Loren said, shaking her head. “Why I ever stopped to talk to you in kindergarten, I’ll never know. Worse twelve years of my life.”
“I love you, too, Loren. Well, might as well get this over with. What do we need again?”
“Well, seeing as it’s a 1940’s project I would say maybe war posters or old antiques from that decade…I dunno, what do you think?”
“I think maybe some old clothes from that time period, too”
“Alrighty, lets’ get going.”
After hours of searching through torn boxes and antique chests, the girls collapsed on an old settee in the back of the attic.
“God, I’m tired. How’d we do?”
Loren looked at the list she had diligently prepared along the way. “Well, an old dress, some war posters, K rations Homer Simpson wouldn’t have eaten, some medals from World War II and a 40’s magazine”
“But that’s not enough!!!” Jaxon wailed. “I can’t stand anymore dust! You have got to be suffering right now, Lori…I’m sorry….but thanks for helping.”
“Hey, its all good…I wouldn’t of dreamed of leaving my bestest buddy up here all alone! Lori said, whipping her runny nose with a tissue. “It was actually kind of fun, I guess…but where can we go to get more stuff?”
“I dunno, maybe Ms. May will let us go and look through her old things….you think? Hey! Lori…Did you hear me?”
Lori, who had been looking at something in the far corner, snapped up, looking distracted. “What...Oh, I’m sorry, Jax, what did you say?”
“I said, Do you think Ms. May will let us look in her attic?”
“I don’t know, but it wouldn’t hurt to ask.” Lori got up and walked to the far corner. “Do you know what’s over here? We didn’t check.”
“Oh, some old Christmas stuff, I guess. You know grandma, she loves Christmas, and she has tons of stuff.”
“Could I look…I think the curious cat just crawled up my ass.” Loren said, moving towards the pile of tinsel and stuffed Christmas dolls.
“Sure, what could it hurt?”
“Yay!” With that, Lori started to un-pile all the Christmas stuff away from the corner. There, lying below the humongous pile of stuff was a tiny box, no bigger than jewelry case.
“What’s this? Hidden treasure?” She asked, arching her eyebrow at Jax.
“I have no idea what that is….probably some trinket my grandpa bought my grandma back in the day.”
“Lets open it!” Loren pleaded with Jax.
“I don’t care, though I doubt it will help us any.”
Sitting back down on the settee, Jax beside her, Lori slowly, carefully opened the box.
“Wow…aren’t they pretty?” Jaxon was wide-eyed with almost child-like fascination.
“Girls, what are you doing?”
Both of the girls jumped in fright, whirling around.
There, looking sicker than she had in years, stood Jaxons’ grandmother, Rosie, looking far more frightened than they were.
A/N: I love little cliffhangers! What big secret is Rosie hiding? I will try to write more later, but I can’t guarantee anything. Please, please, PLEASE review!!!!!
