Haldir laid her gently on one of the beds and moved to the other side of it. Her eyelids fluttered open and she looked up at him, then she saw Celeborn. To Haldirs eyes the lords’ demeanour was in now way threatening, but obviously the girl did for she shied away from Celeborn and moved closer to Haldir. Celeborn bent down to reassure her and she all but threw herself at the marchwarden, who was quick to try and set her fears to rest.
!he is a healer. He is here to help you, he will not hurt you little one.” He said. She had a look of uncertainty for a moment; she glanced at Celeborn suspiciously, then apparently decided he was safe alloallowed him to examine her.
“Do you have a name?” Celeborn asked her.
“G’lia.” Her voice was barely a whisper and she was staring past Celeborn, studiously trying to ignore what he was doing to her. Celeborn didn’t say anything as he looked her over, as he was doing so Galadriel joined them, she was carrying a bundle of clothes. There was a look of sadness in her eyes. After Celeborn had put salves on her injuries, the three of them moved outside the room, so that G’lia could get dressed and so that they could talk privately.
“She has a lot of wounds, they are bad, but they will heal. The question now is where she should go; there are many families that would take her in. But she is scared and does not seem to trunyonnyone.” Celeborn said, glancing at his wife.
“She trusts Haldir.” She said and nodded ever so slightly as if something had been decided. Haldir looked back and forth between the two, it took him a few moments to realise what was happening, and then he shook his head frantically.
“No...no I can’t take care of a child. Where would she sleep...how do I look after a child?” He stuttered. Despite the situation both Celeborn and Galadriel smiled slightly, it was the first time that either of them had seen the dignified marchwarden this close to hysteria.
“You are as ready to care for a child as any parent. G’lia needs you, and while she may not know it she has chosen to trust you.” Galadriel said quietly. Haldir looked towards the room G’lia was in, finally he nodded in agreement. Celeborn and Galadriel quietly left leaving Haldir to explain what was happening to G’lia. He walked over to her and crouched down so he was eye level with her.
“You will be staying with me, come.” He said. For a moment she didn’t seem to notice he was there, and then she looked at him and slowly nodded, she followed silentlhindhind him as he led the way out of the healers ward. Haldirs talen was on the outskirts of Lorien and it took a while to get there. Before they had gotten even halfway there Haldir noticed that she was lagging behind. He had forgotten that she was a lot smaller than he and that she was still injured. He walked back to her and slowed his pace to match hers, after a while he stopped.
“You are tired.” He said, it was more a statement than a question.
“Yes.” She whispered.
“I can carry you the rest of the way if you wish.” He offered. She seemed to hesitate for a moment, and then nodded. He bent and scooped her up in his arms and started walking again. She wrapped her arms around his neck and laid her head on his shoulder. By the time they got to his talen she was had fallen asleep. It was then that he realised that he was going to have to make a lot of changes; the talen was small having a very small main room and three bedrooms. But because of his duties as marchwarden captain kept him on Loriens borders most of the time he had never seen much need for furnishings, as a result the talen was almost bare, there was one chair, a small table and a bed. If G’lia was going to be staying with him he was going to have to do a lot of work to the talen. He put her in his bed and pulled the chair over for him to sleep in. Within moments he to was asleep.

He awoke the next morning to find that G’lia wasn’t in bed. Immediately he was worried and went in search of her. He found her on the balcony, watching the elves go about their business. She glanced back at him as he joined her; he was shocked to see that both of her eyes had changed for the bluish purple colour to black.
“They do not know how safe they are here.” She said. It was the longest statement that he had heard from her.
“Some of them do.” He said quietly. Every adult elf knew how lucky they were that it was some other elf that was an orc and not them.
“That is not what I mean. How do they know that every time they leave here that they will meet orcs?” She asked.
“They do not. But sometimes other things are more important than personal safety.”
“What does ‘personal’ mean?” For the first time since she had started the conversation, he realised that he had been conversing with her as he would an adu

“When’s Mama coming?” She asked him. Haldir took an involuntary step backwards in surprise; he had thought she already knew. There was silence for a moment as she turned to look at him again.
“What’s wrong, Hadir?” She asked. He didn’t know what to say, but she needed to know. He knelt in front of her, so that they were eye level. He took a deep breath, this was going to be hard for her to hear, first the orcs had tortured her and now this.
“G’lia, they did survsurvive what the orcs did to them.” He said.
“What?” She murmured. At first he thought she didn’t understand what he had said.
“They are dead. I am sorry.” For a second she stared at him, and then shook her head frantically.
“No! You lie!” She screamed. She dashed passed him and out the door, shoving past Orophin and Rumil who had been about to enter.
“G’lia stop!” Haldir shouted. She ignored him as she ran down the stairs and past startled elves. Haldir tore after her; Orophin reached out and grabbed him by the arm, bringing Haldir to a halt.
“What happened?” Rumil asked.
“I told her that her parents were dead. Let me go Orophin, I have to stop her!” He said desperately.
“We will help you.” Rumil said. The three brothers hurried down the stairs. G’lia was nowhere in sight, they split up to search for her.
