Haldir paced his cell; he had been locked in here for months with no word from anyone except the person who brought his food day after day. The meal today tasted like potatoes and beets. It was a foul combination though. Despite how much he hated it, he ate it for it would be a long time between meals. It was just as he was finishing up the foul broth that he heard talking that he could not make out, but the voice was familiar. A moment later, the lock clicked in the door and it swung open to reveal a wonderful sight walking in the door.
“Lord Celeborn!” Haldir bowed to his lord. “It is good to see you. I knew you would come for me.”
Celeborn looked over Haldir; he was dirty his his time in the cell and he had grown a bit thinner but over all he looked well. He knew thrchwrchwarden was innocent but there was nothing he could do. “I have spoken to Lord Elrond. Your trial will be this afternoon. I will be there as well, Haldir. It will be held here in Lord Glorfindel’s office.”
“I swear that I am innocent, Lord Celeborn. I know you would hear that from most in my spot, but I swear it is true my lord.”
Celeborn ed aed a hand on his shoulder. “I know, Haldir. I know you are innocent. I will see you this afternoon.”
Haldir smiled. “Yes my lord. Thank you, I knew you would not believe the charges against me.”
Celeborn called for the door to be opened. When it swung open Celeborn addressed the guard, “Bring Haldir whatever he wants to eat and clean him up.” Celeborn walked out the door and it was closed till the guards returned to take him to the bathing chamber.
The guard opened the door and Haldir stood. For the first time in months, he was allowed to walk outside of that door. It was only down to the bathing chambers that Lord Glorfindel himself used, but it was pure bliss to Haldir. The silver haired elf peeled the filthy clothes from his body and climbed into the hot water with a contented sigh. Unfortunately, he did not have long as the guards were impatient. Haldir washed his hair and body quickly, leaving the water dark with filth. As he climbed out, the guard once more gave him another set of clothes. They were made out of the same rough linen. At least they did not put him back in chains for the moment. That alone made Haldir feel better. All he wanted was for this to be over soon so he could get on with his life.
The guards led him back to his cell. Before the door was closed, they asked him what he wanted, “I would like roasted rabbit, stewed apples, with vegetables and sugar biscuits.” The guard read it back from the small piece of parchment he had written it on, and then he left. Haldir’s eyes following him, sure that soon he would be free and on his way back home by the end of the day.
The food was brought to him and it was the best thing he had ever tasted in his entire life. Soon, the plate was clean and he fell into a restful slumber despite the fact that he was still locked up in a cell.

Lord Celeborn looked at Elrond as the Lord of Lorien ran his hand through his hair. “Are you sure it was they?”
Elrond nodded and Celeborn stood angan gan to pace the room. “You are right, this cannot be. We will need to send Haldir somewhere where he will never be seen. Somewhere from which he will never be able to escape.”
“There is no such place.” Elrond shook his head.
Erestor cleared his throat, “I know of one my Lords. It is a place called Eglan. It is where the kings of the past sent Elves, as well as those of other races they wished to make disappear and forget about.”
“His brothers will be most diflt. lt. They will search for him,” noted Celeborn, watching Erestor almost as if he had never seen him before. He still could not believe they were discussing this. Still, it was better than the alternative.
“We will tell them that he is dead, he was banished and he was caught by orcs and killed,” stated Erestor with assurity.
“I do not like this! It should not have to be this way. ” Celeborn watched as his son-in-law stood and walked to the window that looked out over Rivendel.
“Would you rather your sons be banished, Elrond? I know I do not wish to lose my grandsons. If it comes between them and my Marchwarden, well, Haldir is valuable but not irreplaceable. Though I wish Erestor had found someone a little less respected to set up, a nobody.”
Erestor shrugged, “He was the only person I knew of without an alibi. It was him or the twins.”
Elrond had a sudden headache. He pressed his thumb and finger to the bridge of his nose closing his eyes. “I do not wish to lose my sons to their foolishness. Still, I can not believe they let Saelbeth find out their secret. They could have shut him up another way. It was carelessness on their part.”
Erestor nodded, “We will need to work on their discreteness, but for now, this is the only solution to the problem.”
Celeborn had to restrain Elrond to keep him from turning on his own Chief Advisor. “I cannot believe you are so comfortable with this, Erestor! We are going to ruin the life of an innocent elf!”
“Do you think this is the first time such a thing has been done, Elrond? Do you think this is the first time I have had to do something distasteful? Gil-Galad himself had me do the same for him. You are a leader and your choices are not always pleasant. It is not about what you like. It is about what is the greater good of all.”
“Who else have you helped send away, Erestor?” Elrond eyed him warily.
Erestor just gave a casual shrug, his normal unreadable demeanor in place. “You are better off not knowing, both of you,” replied Erestor coolly.
Celeborn cleared his throat, “Come now, let us not fight. We know there is no other way. You know this has to be done, Elrond.”
“It does not mean I have to like it!” stated the distraught Elf Lord.
“No, it does not. This is what we will do. We will go to the barracks and hold his trial. There is no one there who will repeat any of what is said.”
Lord Celeborn stood and walked to the door. “Let us finish cleaning this mess up. The sooner the better.”
With that, he walked out followed by the other two elf lords.
Celeborn knocked on Glorfindel’s door and waited till he was bid entrance before walking into the neatly kept office.
“Lord Glorfindel, we have need of your office while we determine the fate of the Marchwarden. Please be prepared for what ever the outcome.”
Glorfindel nodded. “Of course Lord Celeborn.”
“Bring him to us now.” Celeborn’s look was solemn when he gave the order.
“Bring his dirty clothing as well, added Celeborn as an after thought.
Glorfindel looked confused at the last request but left to carry out the order. The three elf Lords sat and waited for Haldir to be led to them like a lamb to the slaughter.
**
Haldir was still asleep when Glorfindel came to the door of the cell opening it.
“Haldir, wake up. It is time for your hearing.” Glorfindel stood, chains ready as Haldir began to awaken. The warrior rubbed his eyes and sat up, he could not wait to sleep in a real bed tonight. Haldir noticed how patient the seneschal was as he waited for the elf to rise. He was grateful for the small kindness. It took only a second for Glorfindel to put Haldir in chains. When the Lorien elf was secured, he led him out and down the hall to his office, where unbeknownst to him, his fate had already been decided.
