The Violet Sash
My hand trembles as I reach for the blindfold, I am afraid that I will find it dampened with tears once more. And aye, it is. It pains me to know that I mad made you cry. But believe me, melethen, it is not as you think…
You were there for me when I needed you most. Everything you offered I took without hesitation. I took your hand, your heart, even your innocence. And now I take your tears. But what have I given in return?
It is true that I used you. In my emotional turmoil I used you to help ease the sorrow and loneliness that I felt. I used you, all the while wishing you were another.
You may feel that I continue to use you thus, but that is not the truth. I long for him no more. I do not blind you with the violet sash because it is his eyes I would rather see. I do not wish you to be silent because it is his voice that is sweeter to my ears. And I do not cry out his name because he is the one dearest to my heart.
It seems that during our time together I have grown to love you; and I fear that if I embrace this love, I will be hurt again. That is why I continue to pretend to wish you were him—because I am over him, and he can bring me no more pain.
You turn your eyes away from me. Wet lashes softly brush your skin. I cannot bear to see you like this. You deserve so much better.
I take you into my arms. Your lips curve into a half-hearted smile. You may not believe now, but from this moment I vow to put your own needs before mine, because I have come to realize that your happiness is my own.
Tonight, Phin, I will throw away the violet sash. I will give mye myself to you; and while you are inside me I will lose myself to the emerald depths of your eyes. I will drown in the sound of your voiced pleasure. And I will call out your name as you drive me to madness.
All I ask of you, melethen, is that you never leave me.
