“Between men and women there is no friendship possible. There is passion, enmity, worship, love, but no friendship” – Oscar Wilde

The scouts departed early the next morning, fanning out from Rivendell like a watchful net. Annowe and Legolas started north toward the High Pass of the Misty Mountains, using a small boat to paddle up the Loudwater River to the base of the mountains.
Annowe preferred to swim despite the chilly water temperature. With a grin, she began removing her clothes much to Legolas’ consternation. He knew she never swam with her clothes on and had seen her naked plenty of times but the thought of her naked and so close to him was quite unnerving.
As if sensing his discomfort, she quickly she stripped off her clothes and slipped into the river before he had a chance to react or get a good look at her naked form.
She surfaced beside the boat and splashed at him playfully. He scowled mockingly.
“Want to race?” She challenged, rolling over in the water.
“No,” he said disdainfully then quickly accelerated to outrun her.
With a shout of laughter, she sped through the water to catch him. Legolas dug the oar into the water, determined to beat her at least once this trip but she quickly pulled alongside then tried to grab the oar from his hand.
“Cheater!” She accused, grabbing fast to the oar.
“Not a cheater!” He snorted. “I was taking advantage of the opportunity you offered me.”
She laughed and let go of the oar. The two of them continued to playfully speed along the placid river trading banter as they fought for the lead until they grew tired of the game and stopped for the night. They had reached the point where the river met the mountains and would begin to climb in the morning.
Legolas quickly built a small fire while Annowe gathered more wood and hid the boat from view. It was completely dark by the time she returned to the fire. She saw his head tilt in her direction as he picked up her movement.
With a sigh, she sat down next to the fire and warmed her hands. They sat in silence for a while watching the flames devour the wood before Legolas finally spoke.
“It is good to see you again,” he said softly.
She smiled at him. “It is good to see you as well,” she answered. She had missed him terribly, truth be told, but she could not admit that to him.
Instead, she asked, “is there anything you would like me to know?”
He studied her for a moment in the soft light. He knew what she was asking. She wanted to know if he was attached. She can keep guessing, he determined.
“Like what?” He asked innocently, baiting her.
“Oh, I don’t know,” she mused. “Why were you in Rivendell in the first place? How is your father? The usual.” She shrugged as if it didn’t matter to her whether he answered her or not.
He grunted and poked at the fire with a stick. “Father is doing well. He is actually the one who sent me to Rivendell with a message for Elrond,” he finally answered.
Annowe murmured noncommittally. He wasn’t going to tell her what she wanted to know and she sighed. He had never completely forgiven her for running off to Pelargir just as he was coming of age but how could she tell him the truth? She couldn’t even admit the truth to herself until recently and was determined to keep it from him if at all possible.
No, it would be best just to let the sleeping dog lie. She closed her eyes against him and begged Eru for the strength to withstand his presence. The truth would only complicate matters and possibly ruin their friendship and she was not prepared to sacrifice that at any cost.
She would not press him again. Quietly she put out her bedroll and lay down to sleep.
“Good night, Legs,” she said softly.
“Good night, Annowe,” he replied and watched as she curled up with her back to him.
It was sweet torture seeing her again after so many years. He had missed her terribly but was still a bit hurt that she had abandoned him right when he needed her the most. She had tried to tell him why she left but he knew she wasn’t telling him the entire truth. He wondered if she ever would and if she did was it something he wanted to know?
He sighed and looked to the stars, determined that he would not succumb to her presence nor his rekindling desire for her.
