Part 1
Chapter One
“… am at my wits end! It has been centuries, centuries and not a single reaction to my attempts at wooing. If I could simply ignore my heart and move on... by Elbereth I’ve tried, you know I’ve tried, but the yearning of my heart for his will not be refused. Is it all in vain, will I never… are you listening? Elrond? ELROND!”
The half-elven Lord jerked in surprise as he was abruptly pulled from his musings to refocus on the captain of his guard and smiled weakly at the piercing blue eyes flashing in annoyance.
Glorfindel dropped heavily into the plush arm chair directly across from his Lord, the very picture of dejection with all the warning signals of an upcoming sulk.
Elrond rested his elbows upon the arm rests of his own chair, pressed the tips of his fingers together in a pose reminiscent of deep contemplation, and waited. After several moments of silence Glorfindel asked the expected question.
“What am I suppose to do now?”
Elrond leaned forward to capture the miserable blue gaze with his own compassionate brown one before speaking.
“My friend, every six months or so we go through this process. You vocalize your continual despair, I listen…”
“Pretend to listen.” Elrond ignored the petulantly spoken interruption and continued.
“And then I tell you the exact same thing I have told you every time, Erestor has isolated both himself and his heart from all and sundry and after centuries of attempting to win his affections you must accept the obvious; he will not let down his barriers for anyone, not even you. Unless there is some miracle or intervention from the powers that be you hearts desire will not suddenly throw himself into you arms and declare his undying love and devotion. Eventually you must accept this as truth.”
Elrond sighed as the stubborn look he knew so well replaced the dejected one that had moments before been present in his friends eyes, knowing that once again his effort to embed even the smallest kernel of rationality had failed and Glorfindel would continue to relentlessly pursue his futile love for eternity if need be. The blond was a warrior and it was the persistent nature of the true fighter that refusing to surrender to the inevitable. Watching the legendary Balrog slayer leave his office Elrond smiled sadly, musing at the lengths one would go to for love, hoping that Glorfindels efforts and longing would one day be rewarded with his deepest desire.
