Pain of youth

The next nine months went by slowly to Thranduil, but he didn’t care, he know it had to be done in order to keep his secret hidden. Saelbeth and him had already made the needed plans to make the excuses work.

But that wasn’t all that Thranduil had done in those nine months…

He had also build a wall of ice around his heart, he wouldn’t allow anyone in. His heart would never again be anyone’s but his own.

In the darkness of the night he had his son, his Greenleaf. That’s what he would call the boy, Legolas. Even though at first he didn’t want the child, he knew he was going to love his son like he should. He admitted he found the little child the most beautiful baby he had ever seen and softly kissed it on the head.

The little Greenleaf seemed to be giggling softly when he did that and managed to get a hold on a lock of his father’s hair.

Thranduil smiled and gently lay him down in his bedstead.

The few years to come everyone thought that it was the dead of his wife that Thranduil kept away from his people and more and more to himself, he only met those who had a proper reason. When hundreds of years passed by they knew it had to be something else.

None of them however, knew what it was or what it could be.

Legolas was an active child and the only one who seemed to touch Thranduil from inside, for when Legolas and his father were together, Thranduil was happy and friendly, the best father anyone could wish for, though they all thought something was missing.

Thranduil tried, he really did, to act happy around Legolas, but knew he failed a lot with it. He had no desire to be happy and play around with his young son; his heart had died a long while ago and not even his son could bring it back to live.

Yes…he loved Legolas, but he held not all of his heart. He knew Legolas could make him happy a lot of times just by showing how much he appreciated Thranduil as a father. But that just wasn’t enough to melt the icy wall around his heart.

There had been many times for him that he wanted to sail out to Valinor, but he knew he couldn’t, not until Legolas had reached his majority and knew how to take his place.

He only feared that Legolas would get to know the truth someday and he even more feared his reaction to it.

Saelbeth had watched over the king, making sure he wouldn’t do something stupid and said, “My king, you must eat”

Thranduil looked down upon him and answered coldly, “Let someone get me some soup then if you insist.”
Saelbeth was slightly startled by the answer he received, he had noticed that the king grew more and more distant but this was more than he thought was going on. He bowed his head and left the room, to the kitchen; getting the soup.

Thranduil was about to return his attention back to the book he was reading when Legolas came running into the room, tears streaming down his face.

Thranduil put his book aside and took the crying, shivering elfling in his arms and whispered “What happened?”

Legolas buried his head in his father’s tunic and mumbled something.

Thranduil lifted his head and said, “What was that?”

Legolas sniffed and said, “Keiran bullied me ada, he said that I’m a coward….because I didn’t go anywhere with you…and then…he…he pushed me and I fell in the bushes….and then I got stung by a bee.”

Thranduil stroked his face, knowing what Legolas must be going through as he experienced the same thing, but unlike his father, he would help Legolas and whispered, “Don’t let him get you little one, you are much braver than he’ll ever be. He’s just jealous of you. Next time, do to him what he has done to you, now where’s the bee sting?”
