"My father speaks of a shadow drawing over our land. He says he does not know if we can succeed in overcoming the darkness, especially not without the help of others. Differences must be set aside. Lord Elrond will recognize that."
Tári looked down at the crystal-clear water of the river that flowed through the forest of Mirkwood. Her brother spoke in tones of confidence, but she knew him well enough that he did so only to make her feel better. Truth be told, she understood well what options her kind had, and felt that they could succeed in defending themselves against the enemy. The only worry she really had was for her family.
"Valinor is an option. Why should we stay here to be slaughtered when we could sail to freedom?" Haldir had been one of the few to escape from Lothlorien before men had burned it to the ground. He had wanted to go with her father to Imladris, but had been delegated to keeping Mirkwood safe while its elders were gone.
Tári looked up from the water. "You could leave, if you want. Some of us call Middle-earth our home. I call it home. I'd defend it against all others if I had to."
Haldir looked down at her with a smirk. "As would I, my lady. I merely worry for the safety of others. Valar forbid the elves are turned."
Sighing heavily, Tári looked across the grass at her brother. Legolas sat with his back against a tree trunk and watched her with sharp, amused eyes. Their father had told him to keep her safe, as he always did when he went away. Since then, Legolas had kept a close watch on her at all times, as he always promised he would. Some days she wished he wasn't so observant.
"My sister means no offense. She only defends our father's decision."
Tári narrowed her eyes, glaring at her brother for explaining reasons that were not hers. He did it to bother her, she knew. "Don't apologize for me, Legolas. Haldir knows that not one of us would flee if given a choice. Mirkwood is stronger than that."
Legolas opened his mouth to speak, but was interrupted by the Marchwarden. "No apology is necessary. If it worries either of you, my words were never meant to dishonour King Thranduil. I have lost much and despair too often."
Pushing herself up from the ground, Tári wiped her hands on her skirt and shook her head. "Perhaps we are all just a little uneasy about this."
"Father shouldn't be gone long. I have no doubts Elrond will agree to ally himself with us. Together, along with the dwarves, we'll be strong enough to defeat Sauron." Legolas stood and touched Tári's hand. "Then we'll finally be able to leave this forest for a while."
She thought about what was outside the borders of her home. Having been born many years after Legolas, she was never able to go with him when he explored the outside world. Darkness had covered the lands to the south long before she turned old enough to be on her own. He had been gone for many years while she grew up, only to return just after it was seen that men were turning to the dark. Bothered, she moved her hand away from his and crossed her arms.
"Things will never be the same, though. The Lady of the Golden Wood has perished. The emptiness will forever be felt." Haldir clenched his jaw in thought as they headed back towards the houses of Mirkwood.
Tári rubbed her arm and frowned. She had never met Lady Galadriel, but knew her well enough by reputation. Even with the minor scuffles that Lorien and her home had on occasion, Galadriel had still been her queen. An entity to be admired. The emptiness was felt by all.
A hand brushed the hair back from her face. Legolas smiled when she looked at him. "What are you thinking?" he asked quietly.
A tired breath escaped her lips. "I'm thinking I hope father returns before Sauron's armies decide to go after anyone else."
"Don't worry," he replied, bumping her shoulder gently, "I would never let anyone hurt you."
Tári took his hand and squeezed it before letting go and excusing herself from them. She headed along the path and up the stairs to her rooms, exhausted from a long and worrisome day. As she entered and collapsed upon the bed, sleep came swiftly and soundly.

Tári drifted into consciousness as fingers danced along her naked arm. She was warm, the pleasant feeling of not being alone encompassing her. A hand rested over her abdomen and rubbed gently as a form pressed against her back.
"Are you awake?" he asked, his breath falling over her neck.
"Mmmmm..," she answered, not wanting to open her eyes. Comfortable, she tucked her arms into her chest and tried to fall back into the darkness of sleep. The hand at her belly continued to coax her awake.
Soft lips touched her throat and her body froze. Closing her eyes even tighter, she tried to will herself to sleep. He did not allow that. His warm mouth bit gently at the bare skin of her shoulder.
"We shouldn't do this," she whispered.
"Why not?"
She bit her lip as his tongue traced her skin. "Because it isn't right."
His mouth left her body. Pressing his hand against her shoulder, he pushed her to her back. Tári's eyes opened wide as he looked down at her. "It's right," he responded, "I love you."
"I love you," she whispered, "But not like this."
A finger touched her lips as his blue eyes looked over her face. When she was silent, he removed his hand and bent down towards her. "Don't speak. Let me love you, Tári."
She closed her eyes as his mouth dipped to hers...
"Tári."
A warm hand was shaking her shoulder. Inhaling sharply, Tári opened her eyes to the light of day. Legolas was sitting on her bed, looking down at her with an expression of amusement. "You're very difficult to wake up."
She frowned and sat up, rubbing her eyes. The dream still lingered in her mind. "I was having a nightmare."
His face grew concerned. "A nightmare? About what?"
Peering through her fingers, she smiled softly. "About you."
Legolas raised his eyebrows. "Me? What happened?"
Tári removed her hands and pushed the covers off her body. Dangling her feet off the side of her bed, she looked him over. "Nothing. It's not important. Why are you here?"
He didn't seem to mind the change in subject. "I thought you might like to go for breakfast with your brother."
She stood up, grabbed a dress from a drawer, and headed for the bathroom. "We have breakfast every morning, Legolas," she said through the door, "And lunch. And dinner. You don't have to keep an eye on me every moment of the day."
"Are you getting tired of me?" His voice was louder now as he came to stand beside the door.
"No," she sighed, dressing and turning to the mirror. She washed her face and brushed her hair, wondering if the day would bring anything other than the usual. She was growing restless. "But I will if you continue to accompany me everywhere I go."
He was silent for a moment, and she feared she might have hurt his feelings. Opening the door, she titled her head and frowned at his solemn expression. "I promised our father I would take care of you."
"And you are, but he didn't mean you had to become my shadow."
Tári thought she saw a flash of irritation flicker in his eyes, but if it had been there, it was quickly replaced by a look of sorrow. "Forgive me. I did not realize how I was making you feel." He sighed heavily and moved back to the bed, sitting down. "I was gone for so much of your childhood. I think, perhaps, I just don't want to miss out on anything more."
Guilt slowly filtered into her body. "I didn't mean to hurt your feelings. I want to spend time with you, too." She held out her hand and he took it and stood, then was led to the door. "We will have breakfast. But afterwards, I would like to go for a walk by myself. Do you think you can allow that?" She smiled, hoping he would not take offense.
"If it is what you wish, I will obey." He smiled, but it did not seem to be sincere. Sighing quietly, she ignored it and allowed him to lead her to the dining hall.
