Missing Him
TITLE: Forever His ~ Missing Him (2/13)
RATING: PG-13 at the moment.
Missing Him
few few weeks later, Orlando raced excitedly to Elijah’s trailer. The cigarette breaks they half shared had cemented their friendship, and so it was natural that Elijah should be the first person to hear the good news.
As he was about to knock on the trailer door, he heard Elijah’s voice. The younger man sounded almost saddened.
“I just…I miss you.”
Orlando felt his heart twist at Elijah’s words, though he wasn’t sure whether it was from sympathy or jealousy. He had ady ady admitted to himself – though not to anyone else – that he was attracted to the younger man, but until now he had been certain that friendship was enough.
Elijah’s next words were spoken as a mixture of concern and defence. “No, of course I understand. This is a great opportunity; of course I don’t want you to turn it down. Can’t I miss you and be happy for you at the same time?”
Of course you can, Orlando had wanted to scream. He tried to think of who this person could be – maybe it wasn’t anyone special. Maybe it was his sister or something – Elijah always said that his family was close, so maybe that was it.
“Okay…well if you do manage to get some free time, just let me know.”
That sounded almost desperate – there was definite longing in the American’s voice. Orlando didn’t like that – longing suggested more than family.
“Alright…well, just phone me soon…okay…I love you.”
That settled it – the “I love you” was definitely not being said to family. Orlando suddenly found himself hating whoever had been at the other end of the phone – whoever it was that held Elijah’s heart.
Gathering himself, he finally knocked on the trailer door. He knew how odd it must have looked, him standing there doing nothing. It would look even odder to now just walk away, so he had to go through with what he’d initially been there to

Elijah answered the door almost immediately and Orlando’s heart instantly melted. Hatred for the unknown became sympathy for his friend as he registered the look in Elijah’s eyes. It was something that was almost homesickness, but not quite.
Elijah forced himself to smile at Orlando. “Hi, Orli. Come in.”
Orlando followed the smaller man into the trailer. Not wanting to let on what he had overheard, he asked, “Is everything okay?”
Elijah nodded. “I’m fine. Justittlittle homesick, that’s all.” He didn’t want to reveal everything to the other man, not yet. He couldn’t be certain that he, or any of the other cast, would understand and accept what he was.
Orlando nodded sympathetically. “I know what you mean. Home seems so far away sometimes.”
Elijah sighed. “Don’t I know it,” he muttered.
Orlando took a deep breath, hoping that he could cheer Elijah up with his next bit of news. “I had a very interesting phone call earlier.”
“Yeah?” Elijah forced himself to sound as excited as Orlando seemed. After all, it wasn’t the Brit’s fault that fate wanted to keep him unhappy.
Orlando nodded. “Ridley Scott’s making this film, Black Hawk Down, and I’ve been offered a role in it. It’s only little, but still…”
At the mention of first the director and then the film, Elijah seemed to shrink back. When he spoke, there was a definite edge to his tone. “That’s great, Orli. I’m pleased for you.”
Orlando looked more closely at Elijah. “Are you sure everything’s okay?”
Elijah shrugged. “woulwouldn’t it be? Hey, you should let the others know. I’m sure they’ll want to celebrate.”
Orlando knew this was Elijah’s way of telling him to leave, and he knew this was not the time to resist. “If we do go and celebrate…you’ll come, won’t you?”
Elijah nodded. “Of course.”

He stood frozen for what felt like an eternity once Orlando had left. Though he got on well enough with most of the cast, Orlando had become almost his partner in crime, the Dom to his Billy, if you wanted to look at it that way. It was a comfort to have someone he could attach himself to, and now his comfort was leaving.
To the same place that had already claimed the one he loved above all others.
He was sorely tempted to write a sarcastic letter to Mr Scott, thanking him for stealing two of the people he loved most. Loved in different ways, of course, but loved all the same.
His thoughts were distracted by the shrill ring of the telephone. Hesitantly, he moved to answer it. They said luck tended to run in threes…
“Lij, it’s Clea. I’ve just spoken to Josh.”
“Oh, hi, Clea. Yeah, great news, isn’t it?” He knew it was stupid of him to try and pretend to her, but it didn’t stop him from doing it anyway.
Well you’d think so, but he seems convinced that you don’t want him doing it.”
“I want him to do it.” Was he convincing her or himself? “I just…”
“You were hoping for him to come and see you?” Was it him or could she read him just from his tone of voice? “Lij, it’s no secret that you miss him. He misses you too. Did you think maybe he was taking this part so that your being in New Zealand wasn’t as hard?”
Elijah felt immediately ashamed. “I…I hadn’t thought of that,” he confessed. “Is he angry with me?”
“Of course he’s not angry with you. He’s just worried.”
Elijah sighed. “I suppose I should just talk to him, right? Explain that I’m just missing him like crazy?”
“It might be an idea.”

That night, everyone commented on how quiet he was being. They had all expected him to be the one constantly at Orlando’s side, sharing the joy of his best on-set friend. But no matter how hard he tried to muster some enthusiasm, it still seemed a better plan to sit in the corner and smoke.
He roused with a start as he felt the familiar vibration that indicated he had a message on his mobile. He pressed the button to read it and had to struggle not to break down with the strength of emotion threatening to overwhelm him.
Just a quick message to let you know that I love you, I miss you and I long for the day when we finally see each other again. xJx
“Who’s that from?”
Elijah jumped at the sudden question. It was Dom. “N…no-one. I mean, no-one special.”
“Can we see?” Naturally, Billy had to continue what Dom had started. They were fine if you were in the mood to take them but in his current frame of mind, Elijah was already beginning to feel threatened.
“I don’t know why you’d want to. Like I said, it’s really nothing special.”
“Then you won’t mind us finding out for ourselves.” Dom grabbed the phone from Elijah’s loose grasp and glanced at the screen. Once he’d read the message, he threw the phone to Billy, a mischievous glint in his eyes. “Nothing special, eh? So who is this mysterious ‘J’?”
“No-one.” They’re only winding you up. Don’t let them get to you.
“Doesn’t seem like no-one to me,” Billy commented. “I love you, I miss you and I long for -”
“Alright, alright!” Elijah snapped as he snatched his phone back. “So it isn’t no-one. I lied, big deal. Can we now please drop it?”
He knew it had been a lot to ask. Dom and Billy had been drinking, and on such occasions they didn’t seem to realise that their idea of too far was nowhere near anyone else’s.
“So, what does the J stand for?” Dom wanted to know. “Jane? Jasmine? Jenny?”
“Justin?” Billy smirked. “No-one said it had to be a girl.”
Elijah blushed furiously at this. “Does it matter? Just drop it already!” The mildest hint of tears laced his voice.
“Okay you guys, leave him be.” Sean, as usual, was the calming voice of the group. He had made an effort to take Elijah under his wing, claiming it was to help strengthen the portrayal of the relationship between Frodo and Sam. At times like this, Elijah was grateful for it.
Dom, reacting more to Elijah’s tone than to Sean, immediately backed down. “Sorry, Lij. We didn’t mean to upset you.”
“We were only messing.” Billy moved to place a hand on Elijah’s shoulder, only to be gently stopped by Sean.
“Why don’t you guys just leave him alone, eh?” The older of the two Americans moved to sit next to the younger, almost as though to shield Elijah from the others.
Billy nodded. “Of course. Sorry, Elijah.”
As the two Brits moved to join the rest of the group, Sean turned to Elijah. “Is everything okay? I’ve never heard you snap at those two like that before.”
Elijah bit his lip, more to try and stem the threat of tears than anything else. In an attempt to avoid the question, he whispered, “Thanks for stepping in.”
“You’re welcome, but that wasn’t the question.” Sean tried to force eye contact with his friend. “Do you wanna tell me what’s wrong?”
As soon as Elijah had opened his mouth to speak, the tears that threatened had spilled from his eyes. Unable to vocalise for the restrained sobs, he simply stared at Sean as though he were somehow able to transmit everything he wanted to say thr his his look.
Sean pulled Elijah to him, concerned for the teenager. Something had definitely been wrong all day, and he was worried that Elijah was bottling things up because he didn’t know where to turn.
“You know you can tell me anything, donou?”ou?”
Elijah looked up, determined to try and say something, anything that would make it all make sense. The only three words he could think of were the same three words he had been thinking to himself all night.
“I miss him.”
