Hobbitnapped

Chapter 20

Aragorn slept soundly through out the night as his guard kept watch. At first light though
he was wide awake. He approached the spot where he had left the four hobbits the night
before. All were asleep. Sam had curled himself protectively around Frodo and Merry
and Pippin were snuggled up against each other for warmth. Aragorn smiled in spite of
himself. The love these creatures felt for each other was obvious. Even though he had known them for quite a while, he would never stop being amazed by them.

Aragorn carefully bent down and placed his hand on Frodo’s chest to make sure he was all right. The smooth, rhythmic movement told Aragorn that it was well with Frodo. Sam sensed movement and was instantly awake.

“OH! You startled me sir! Is everything all right?”

“Yes Sam. everything is fine.” Aragorn replied. “Did you sleep well?” Sam blushed at that question.

“Forgive me sir. I fell asleep. I just could not help myself!”

Aragorn chuckled. “Its all right Sam. No harm done. If Frodo had needed anything I am sure that you would have known it.” Sam nodded.

Merry and Pippin were now awake as well and had heard the exchange between Sam and Aragorn.

“Morning” Merry said.

“Morning” Aragorn replied. “You should get up and about. We will be leaving soon. I want to reach Rivendell as soon as possible.”

The three hobbits nodded at him and began to get cleaned up while Aragorn checked Frodo more thoroughly. The swelling in his face had gone down some in the night and the bruises were turning a slight green around the edges indicating healing. Aragorn very carefully lifted Frodo and rolled him over to look at his back. Some of the welts were weeping but none were actively bleeding. Aragorn carefully dabbed at these with a wet cloth. Frodo moved slightly at the touch and moaned softly. Aragorn settled himself and cradled Frodo in his arms trying to comfort his friend. Frodo opened his eyes and looked up at Aragorn.

“A...Aragorn?” The word came out as barely a whisper

“Shhh Frodo, all is well. You are safe among friends now.” Frodo sighed and closed his eyes again settling into the comfort of Aragorn’s arms.

Sam approached quietly. “Sam, would you get my pack for me? I want to give Frodo something to help him sleep. It will not be easy for him to travel.” Sam nodded and went to fetch Aragorn’s pack.

“S...Sam?” Frodo whispered. “Sam’s..dead. Ferny killed him.” A tear slowly made its way down Frodo’s cheek.

Sam had heard this and he bent down next to Aragorn and Frodo. “No Mr. Frodo. Your Sam’s not dead. I’m right here. And I am never going to leave you again.” Frodo did not hear this. His face contorted as pain shot through his body. He cried out. Aragorn lifted a vial to Frodo’s lips.

“Frodo, drink this. It will help you sleep.”

Frodo protested weakly. “Poison....”

~~~~~~~~~~
Frodo found himself drifting in a gray mist Neither here nor there. He was all alone here. ‘Am I dead? Am I alive?’ “HELLO!!” Frodo called out only to hear it echo back to him. He still felt pain in his body. He heard a familiar voice then. ‘Aragorn?......’ Frodo thought confusion rising in his mind. ‘Was Aragorn really here with me?’ ‘How is that possible? He is in Gondor.’ Frodo looked around him. Nothing but gray mist. ‘Where am I?’ Aragorn’s words drifted through the haze. “Sam........pack........” ‘Sam?’ Frodo looked around frantically looking for his friend. ‘No, Sam is dead. Ferny killed him. He told me.’ Frodo started to cry at the loss of his friend. “Frodo drink this ” ‘Aragorn? No its a trick, Ferny wants to poison me....’ Then Sam’s voice drifted through the haze.
~~~~~~~~~~

“No Mr. Frodo,” Sam said. “Its not poison. It is medicine. It will help you.”
Frodo’s eyes opened in sudden recognition. “Sam? Sam is it really you? Where are you?” Frodo grabbed blindly at the air.

“I’m right here Mr. Frodo. Right by your side where I belong.” Sam said as he took Frodo’s hands into his own.

Aragorn tipped the vial and Frodo drank willingly as he kept his eyes on Sam. “Sam” Frodo said weakly as his eyes closed and he fell back into darkness.

Jonas approached Aragorn and the Hobbits. “Sire, the camp is packed up and we are ready to move out.”

Aragorn looked up, “Thank you Captain. I will carry Frodo once again and the others will ride with your men.” he said. “See if you can keep up today?” He added with a smile.

Jonas bowed “Yes sire!” he gave a small smile and went to join his men. Merry, Pippin and Sam mounted up with the Guards and the company once again set out toward Rivendell.
