Hobbitnapped
Chapter 19
“No Frodo” Aragorn whispered to the unconscious hobbit. “it is not over my friend. Do not give up now.” he carefully laid Frodo back down on his stomach. In his struggles Frodo had opened up more of the wounds on his back. He was bleeding heavily again.
Aragorn sighed his grief and looked up at the sun. Day was quickly giving way to evening. Soon there would not be enough light to see to suture Frodo’s back. Aragorn quickly prepared the needle and threads he would need. He then washed Frodo’s back again and gently rubbed a lotion on it that would numb the skin. This would help should Frodo wake up again. With a sad look at his friends face Aragorn set needle to skin and began to suture the deepest of the wounds.
“Captain” Called Aragorn. “Bring me some light!” It had grown almost full dark now and Aragorn could no longer see clearly. He was almost done with the wounds on Frodo’s back but he needed to address the wounds further down. Jonas soon approached with two small lanterns and placed them, one on each side of Frodo. “I also need fresh water warmed up.“ Aragorn said. Jonas took the pan and walked off toward the fire.
Sam stirred again. He rolled over and mumbled incoherently as his eyes started to flutter open. “Merry, Pippin.” Aragorn called. The two came running over, Pippin stopped with a gasp at the sight of Frodo’s back.
“Will he live?” Pippin asked hopefully.
Aragorn looked at Pippin and sighed. “I am doing all I can for him.”
Sam sat up.
“I need you and Merry to take Sam away from here. Take him to the fire and get him something to eat and drink.
Before Sam was fully aware, Merry and Pippin had him on his feet and were leading him toward the campfire.
“Mr. Merry?” “Mr. Pippin?” Sam asked looking from one to the other in a daze. “What happened?”
“Don’t worry none Sam. Its all right now.” Merry said. Sam shook his head, trying to remember something. He felt it was something very important but it was just beyond his grasp. Merry helped Sam sit down on the log in front of the fire while Pippin got him some water to drink.
All of a sudden Sam jumped up. “FRODO!” he yelled. He turned to Merry. “Where is Frodo?” he asked, his eyes filled with terror.
Merry took hold of Sam’s arms just below the shoulder and looked him straight in the eyes. “Frodo is here Sam. He’s alive. Aragorn is taking care of him.”
Sam looked around wildly until he saw Aragorn then he made to go over to him. Merry and Pippin stopped Sam.
“No Sam, don’t go over there, not yet.” Merry said.
Sam strong armed his way past the two hobbits and was at Frodo’s side before anyone could stop him.
Aragorn had finished suturing Frodo’s back and had just covered him with the cloak when Sam collapsed to his knees beside him.
“Oh Frodo!” Sam said unable to hold back the tears. He brushed the hair away from the side of Frodo’s face and took a hold of his pale hand. Merry and Pippin came up right behind him.
“Sorry Aragorn” Merry said, “He was too quick for us.” Pippin added. Aragorn ignored them. He put a hand on Sam’s shoulder.
“Sam?” he said. “Sam, are you all right?” Sam looked up and nodded.
“Why is Mr. Frodo lying like this?” He asked. “Wouldn’t it be better for him to be lying on his back?” Aragorn was trying to find words to tell Sam what had happened when Jonas appeared with fresh water.
“Sire, would you like me to take these three away?” he asked.
“No Captain, its all right, they can stay now.” Aragorn replied.
“Very well Sire.” Jonas said with a bow and left.
Aragorn decided it was easiest to just show him. “Sam,” he said. “I will pull the cloak away but you must promise to be strong.” Sam swallowed hard and nodded his head. Merry and Pippin came up, one on either side of Sam, and placed their arms around his shoulders. Aragorn slowly lifted the cloak off Frodo. A sharp hiss of breath taken between clenched teeth was the only sound that came from Sam. He sat there, unmoving, as the tears rolled down his cheeks. Aragorn covered Frodo back up. With a finger under his chin Aragorn turned Sam’s head to face him.
“Sam,” he said softly, “there may be more injuries further down. Inside.” Sam nodded he knew what Aragorn was referring to. He had heard stories about men doing that to each other. Even hobbit men. Merry and Pippin understood too. They stood up and began to pull Sam to his feet. He resisted.
“No, I won’t leave him again. Every time I do something bad happens to him.” Sam looked pleading at Aragorn. “Please Mr. Aragorn sir. I won’t be any trouble. Please let me stay here.”
Aragorn nodded. “All right Sam, you can stay. But you must not interfere in any way, do you understand?” Sam nodded and Merry and Pippin settled down beside him.
Aragorn moved the two small lanterns down beside Frodo’s thighs then lifted the cloak to reveal Frodo’s lower half. He washed the dried blood and dirt away with the fresh Athelas water. There was extensive bruising on Frodo’s buttocks and thighs as well as some raised welts. However there were no open wounds as there had been on his back. Aragorn rinsed the cloth out in the water and, with a look of warning at the three, he carefully spread Frodo’s buttocks. Frodo moaned weakly. Sam was right there whispering reassurances into Frodo’s ear. Aragorn continued. He washed away some of the dried blood. It was with horror that Aragorn realized his worst fears were true.
Frodo had been raped.
Aragorn gently washed as much of the dried blood away from Frodo’s backside as he felt could safely be done. He did not however disturb the clot that had formed, he was afraid of starting more bleeding. Aragorn carefully rolled Frodo onto his back and covered him with the cloak.
“His injuries are grievous” he said. “he will need to be watched closely.”
Sam spoke up quickly. “I’ll stay and watch him. I am not tired in the least and I can call you if anything happens.” He told Aragorn. Aragorn agreed.
“All right Sam. But let me know if ANYTHING happens.”
“I will.” Sam replied already situating himself so he could watch Frodo and be comfortable. Merry and Pippin looked at each other and sat down next to Sam.
“We will stay here and keep Sam company.” they said in unison. Aragorn nodded and walked off toward the fire to settle down for the night.
