Chapter 18 - Reconciliation

Haldir stayed in the room, alternately pacing and sitting, as he could not settle the restless in his mind. A few times the laughter and merry sounding voices found its way through the open window; the noise seemed to ring in his ears. He found himself pacing by the window looking out, hoping to get a glance of Annis. He needed to see her; to talk to her for he had to explain everything. As night fell, he ceased the pacing and retreated to a chair by the fire. He willed Aragorn to come for he wanted to know how much Aragorn knew and what he thought. The contemplation of the consequences for his actions seemed to come crashing down.

He heard light footsteps approaching and looked to the door, then slowly rose walking towards it. As he opened the door, he felt a lump in his throat as his saw Annis standing before him. He had only seen her briefly earlier and had been too worried about all the events to truly look at her appearance. Now here she stood, her hair pulled back off her face in ornate braids with pink flowers woven in. The pale pink dress was so light it was almost white. The fabric was decorated with luminescent beads around the edges and emphasized her small waist.

Neither spoke as their eyes met and remained locked. Haldir reached his left hand out to touch her face. This movement seemed to snap the trance between them and Annis moved past him into the room. She walked to the fire and stood with her back to Haldir. Her eyes fixed on the flames as if they would tell the story. Haldir closed the door and moved towards her. He reached out to touch her shoulders but she stepped to the side and turned to face him. Only one soft word escaped her lips.

“Why?”

Haldir took a deep breath and wiped his face as he moved back to sit in the chair again. He seemed to struggle to find his voice for a moment, his eyes locking with hers. He took a deep breath before speaking. His voice was surprisingly soft as he replied to her question.

“Annis, what passed between us in Rivendell was a mistake. A series of misunderstandings which I regret.”

“Misunderstandings? You tossed me out like a common harlot!”

“I can only say I am sorry; what passed between us was an error. I came here pure of heart, knowing what I did was wrong.”

“Wrong? Do you think it is so easy just to run in and declare your love? You hurt me Haldir. For I loved you and you threw me out without a chance to defend myself, though I still do not know what I had to defend myself about.”

Haldir sighed and inhaled deeply. Her words cut him but he felt a slight anger brewing since truly he was here with good intentions. He slid forward in his seat and looked up at Annis who remained a few feet back.

“I believed you had betrayed me. I felt as if all you had said to me were lies …”

“Betray you! How could you believe I would do that? Do you think that little of me to believe I would be capable of doing such a thing?”

Annis’ voice was high pitched as she interrupted him. She had not been given the chance to argue with him in Rivendell and her anger was boiling through. Haldir grabbed the arms of the chair and pushed himself up, then moved swiftly towards her, standing a few feet before her, his eyes smoldering slightly.

“I saw you with Maresto.”

Annis looked at him not sure what he meant.

“Aye we are friends. The last time I knew I was allowed to be with friends.”

“No Annis….I saw you with him by the river. Under his body…kissing him…”

Annis heard the words and it felt as if someone had punched her in the stomach. She closed her eyes and slipped to her knees. She opened her eyes slowly and looked into the fire as Haldir continued.

“It drove me into a rage. After I saw how Elrond looked at me and viewed us being together, I could only think the worse. I raged for hours, my mind grabbing bits of information and making my own story. I soon believed you had fooled me and your true intentions lay with Maresto.”

Annis looked up at Haldir and shook her head.

“But why not ask me Haldir? Why assume what you did? I would have told you what passed between Maresto and I was a mistake, nothing more than a foolish dream that had once existed.”

Haldir emitted a strange choked laughed.

“Would you have been sane if you saw me on top of another, kissing her? Would you have felt logic and reason in your mind to be calm and talk to me?”

Haldir had Annis there. She knew she could not say she would have remained rational. She would have flown into a rage also. She shook her head and sighed then shifted herself to sit in front of the fire. She felt Haldir kneeling behind her, his hands on her hair. She leaned back against his knees.

“Oh Haldir, you should have said something. I have been convinced Elrond spoke to you; making you turn away from me. I cannot deny something passed between Maresto and me but I denied him for I love you.”

She looked back up to Haldir who had shifted himself to sit by her. He stroked her hair and looked at her.

“I have spoken to Maresto; he is the one who told me you did not want his attentions. Unfortunately, by then I had allowed my mind to hear only what I wanted to hear. I had you marrying another to punish me….to get approval from your father and Elrond. In my rage and anguish I forgot there were others in your family.”

“You believed it was me to wed?” Annis raised an eyebrow as she looked at him. “I could not wed another for my heart belongs to you. “

“And mine to you. However you have to understand I only saw parts of what was happening, you under Maresto, your choice to leave the wardens…your choice not to return to Caras Galadhon.”

“Haldir, I made the choice to leave the wardens however I did not make the choice to leave Caras Galadhon.”

“Your father, he said you were leaving these walls. Are you not returning to Rivendell?”

“Nay, I am returning to Caras Galadhon. Did Galadriel not tell you? I have made my choice to leave the human world, to join my mother’s kin and serve Galadriel as her aide. She feels my strength lies in healing and foresight, so therefore, I have chosen to serve her and learn more of what natural skills I possess.”

Haldir sighed deeply and chuckled gently as he stroked her cheek. The great lady must have foreseen most of this; she must have known what was to play out.

“It seems I have been left in the dark. She told me nothing, Annis, other than you left the wardens. I feel she may have been guiding me to the path I was to follow. I should have known something was afoot when she allowed me to leave the woods to join the hunting party. It was as if she knew what I would encounter.”

Annis smiled and shook her head. How quickly things seemed to fall into place and settle. She could not truly blame Haldir for he had seen something that would have driven her to a rage also. The last of her anger melted away and she reached out touching his face. He turned his head and caught the palm of her hand with his lips. Moving his, hand over hers holding it to his cheek.

“Though I now fear what your father will say for my boldness of actions.”

“Aye, it was quite a surprise. At first I felt as if I was in a dream.”

“For you a dream, me a nightmare. I was sure your father would throw me out after that.”

“It seems you are safe for now. Unless he plans on tossing you out after you are well rested.” Annis eyed the room and looked to Haldir.

“Aye a tough man he is. Rest your enemies and then throw them out in disgrace.” Haldir laughed gently.

Annis shifted her body so she leant against his chest and stroked his cheek gently. Her eyes sparkling as she studied his face. Haldir leant down and caught her lips with his own, gently at first. He then moved his hand to the back of her head adjusting her position to deepen the kiss. He pushed his tongue between her sweet lips, her own tongue meeting his and toying with it, his hand holding her head tightly. The weeks of anguish melting as they reconnected.

Haldir moved his body to lay her down, his own body lying on top of hers. He heard a soft moan escape her lips as he broke his lips away and kissed her neck, tasting the rose water she had put on her skin. Annis’ hands slid over his hair and to his shoulders, rubbing them gently. His lips moved to the tender flesh on her chest which was heaving slightly now. His tongue flicking along the crease between her breasts which disappeared beneath the fabric. He felt her hands tugging at his tunic. Then a knock sounded through the room and Haldir’s head snapped over to the door. He eyed the door in frustration, Annis’ eyes also moving to the door, a look of desire and frustration as she shook her head and mouthed the word “no.”

Haldir smiled and kissed her cheek then pushed himself off her body and tried to straighten the tunic covering the obvious arousal. He moved to the door opening it so whoever was on the other side could not see the fire or Annis. A guard was there who informing him that Aragorn was awaiting him in the throne room. Haldir nodded and closed the door. He looked back at the fire and saw Annis’ sitting up, her cheeks flushed. He wanted to go back and be with her but knew he needed to go to Aragorn; to disgrace him twice in one day would be too much.

“It seems my fate awaits.”

Annis stood and joined him by the door. She took his hand in her own and squeezed it tightly.

“I will go as well for this is my fate too.”

“No, I must face this alone.”

He leant over and caught her lips again. He opened the door and motioned for Annis to leave before him. She moved by him and he followed. Annis turned and stroked his cheek gently before turning and moving deeper into the corridor. Haldir watched and smiled then turned the other way and moved towards the throne room.
