Haldir plopped down on the bed and stretched out. He was exhausted. After everything that had happened, he decided the best course of action was to throw himself into anything not involving Thranduil, Legolas, or his brothers. Closing his eyes, he smiled at the blackness.
Celeborn peeked around the door and smiled at the site of his new love stretched out, head resting on his arms, his legs crossed at the ankles. Lightly, he cleared his throat, and smiled as Haldir looked up at him. Sitting up slightly, he smiled back and beckoned for him to come in.
Settling on the bed next to him, Celeborn smiled as Haldir reached out a hand to touch his back. “Are you alright, Haldir?”
“Yes, I am fine. Just… trying to clear my mind. I wish everything would go back to normal again.”
“I almost wish they had not come to visit.”
“Aye, as do I, although… I do not know, some good came of it.”
“Good?”
“Yes. Well… yes, good. Rumil seems to have grown a little, although I fear not enough.”
“And you got to spend time with Thranduil.”
“Yes…”
“It is alright. I understand.”
“Understand what?”
“You have feelings for him.”
“I did, but I do not anymore.”
“Haldir, things will never get back to normal, and things will never work between us, if you do not cease lying to yourself.”

“May I ask you something?” Rumil looked over to his older brother in reply. Their walk had been slow and silent until now. Not that it really bothered him. He was enjoying kicking rocks off the road like he never had before.
“Of course, Orophin.”
“Alright. And do not take offense. But where did that all come from?”
“All of what?”
“You… Thranduil… the whole quick fling… what was that all about?”
Rumil smiled. “Equalizing things. I… hm, this is terrible, but I feel better now.”
“Why?”
“I do not know. I had a reason for bedding him. I guess I wanted to get back at Haldir, and I feel better now. But it seemed pointless as soon as it was over.”
“Those things usually do.”
“How would you know?”
“You do not know everything about me, Rumil.”
“I do not?”
“No, of course not! I have had revenge sex, too. It does nothing, but for some reason it can melt some anger. Although be aware of the possible new anger.”
“What do you mean?”
“Haldir loved him. I understand you took a liking to Legolas, but you did not love him.”
“And Haldir did not really love Thranduil.”
“I do not believe that. You can tell things that are unsaid by looking into someone’s eyes.”
“He loved him.”
“Yes. I think so, anyway. I do not believe it was a deep love, but it could have gotten to that point eventually.”
“So I did screw things up for everyone?”
“Not everyone. You may have ruined their relationship, but Haldir gained something.”
“What is that?”
“He gained the relief of not having to worry about you like you are an elfling all the time.”
“I learned more than I needed to.”
“No, you learned exactly what you needed to. It was not in a good way, and it could have been taught differently. But you learned none the less. If it had been learned differently… Haldir may have decided it was alright to leave Lothlorien.”
“Thranduil does not believe he would have.”
“I do not agree. If he knew we would be alright without him, he would go. But it is nothing to worry about now.”
“I know. I broke that up.”
“Yes. But with every ending comes a new beginning.”
“Why are you confusing me so much today?”
Orophin laughed. “I do not mean to.”
“So what is the new beginning?”
“New lesson for you! Next time you see Haldir and Celeborn together, look into his eyes and you tell me what the new beginning is.”

Haldir rolled over and bumped Celeborn by accident. Looking over his shoulder, he smiled at him curled up beside him. He was glad things were moving so slowly between the two of them. They had not made love yet, although they had come close.
Thinking back to the night before, he remembered the words Celeborn had spoke. He was right. He needed to admit to himself that he had felt more than lust for Thranduil. It was over, and in a way he was glad it was. Things would have been too different for him, and possibly too strange with Legolas always there. But his relationship with Celeborn, if taken slowly, would not end as badly as it had with Thranduil. Smiling, he realized he was already thinking of the end. He looked over his shoulder again and spent a moment just listening to his steady breathing as he slept. With any luck, there would be no end. He wanted to do this differently.
Suddenly, his eyes widened. He remembered Thranduil was leaving this morning. Jumping from the bed, he quietly moved across the room, throwing on his clothes as quickly as he could. He had so much he wanted to say to Thranduil before he left. Most of all, he wanted to apologize for the way their relationship had ended. He did not deserve that. Neither of them did.
Closing the door behind him as quietly as he could, he bounded down the steps and jumped onto the ground. Walking as quickly as he could, he made his way to Thranduil’s talan, rehearsing in his mind what he was going to say when he arrived.

The sun was only now beginning to rise over the horizon as Haldir arrived at the talan. He took a moment to collect himself, repeated what he had rehearsed, and took a deep breath. Stepping forward, he lifted his hand and knocked gently on the door.
He waited for a moment. No answer came back. So he knocked a little bit louder. Silence again greeted him. Pushing the door open, he stepped inside and looked around.
The talan was empty. The candles had been removed and the doors of the wardrobe stood open, the emptiness of it yawning back at him. It looked like no one had been in here in decades.
Making his way across the talan, Haldir sat down on the bed and looked around himself in silence. They had already gone. He felt a tear escape his eye as he realized he was not going to have the chance to say the things he had wanted to. The next time he saw Thranduil, it would not matter any longer.
Standing again, he walked back to the door of the empty talan. He looked back one last time, remembering the time they had spent together here. He smiled through his tears and said to the empty air, “I did love you, Thranduil. And you will always own a piece of my heart.”
He stepped outside again and closed the door behind him. Breathing in deeply, he could smell the crisp morning air. It was a new day. A new start. He smiled and made his way back to his own talan, where Celeborn waited for him.
