Chapter 18

Bell watched anxiously as Hamfast left. When the boys did not show up that morning Hamfast had told her that they probably slept in.

“I’ll go rouse them and we will make for town.” Hamfast said.

He kissed Bell lightly and walked toward Bag End. As he approached his old masters home a sense of foreboding came over him. Something did not feel right. The place looked and felt deserted. As he approached the front door the Gaffer knew he would not find anyone there.

He entered and found Bag End cold and dark. The fires had burned down during the night. He made a quick check of the hole. The remains of last nights supper were still on the table and there was no indication that anyone was around this morning. Hamfast checked one last thing before heading back home.

“Bell!” Hamfast yelled as he approached his home again.

Bell appeared in the doorway wiping her hands on a dishtowel. “What is it?” She asked her voice full of concern.

“They’re gone!” he said.

“Wha...?” Bell started to ask.

“I have a feeling they foolishly went off on their own to find Frodo.” Hamfast looked at his wife. “Sting is missing.” he said.

“No” Bell said tears filling her eyes. “What if something happens to them?”

“They’ll be all right Bell.” Hamfast said “They are three strong lads, I’m sure they can take care of themselves.” He kissed Bell on the forehead. “I’ll go into town and see if anyone has heard from them.” He left Bell standing in the doorway.

When Hamfast got to town the other groups were just setting out to search. He asked several hobbits if they had seen his son and his friends but they all answered no. Starting to doubt his earlier assumption that the boys were all right, Hamfast approached the Sheriff.

“Good Morning Mister Gamgee.” The Sheriff began then stopped when he saw the look on the Gaffers face. “What is it? You look distressed.” he said.

“My boy and his two friends were gone when I went to collect them this morning and their supper was cold on the table.” Hamfast said.

“You don’t suppose they went off on their own now do you?” asked the Sheriff.

“That’s exactly what I suppose.” replied Hamfast.

The Sheriff sighed and ran his hand through his hair. “We’ll have to send word out to the search parties to keep an eye out for them too.”

“I would appreciate it.” Hamfast replied. “I know they fought in the wars and all but they are barely of age yet and none of us knows what we are up against yet.”

The Sheriff placed a hand on the Gaffer’s shoulder. “Don’t worry Mister Gamgee. Their stout lads and can take care of themselves and each other.” The Sheriff said. The Gaffer sat down with the Sheriff and the town elders to plan the strategy for the next days searches if nothing were to turn up today and to wait word from the search parties.

As evening approached the search parties began to return. All reported having seen nothing of Frodo or the other three. When the last of the parties reported in Hamfast stood to return home, wondering what he was going to tell his son’s mother.

There was a loud commotion outside. The sound of raised voices could be heard along with the gallop of horses hooves. Hamfast followed the Sheriff and his deputies outside. One of the big folk had ridden into town. He was dressed like a soldier. “Here now,” The Sheriff called out. “What is the meaning of this?”

The rider dismounted. “My name is Berand. I am a member of King Elessar’s Guard.” he said. A murmur went thorough the crowd that had gathered. “I have a message for Mister Hamfast Gamgee. Where might I find him?”

“I am he.” Hamfast said stepping forward.

Berand approached him and bowed. “The King sends word of your son. Samwise and his friends are well. They are in the Kings company as we speak. He also sends word that Master Baggins has been found.” Gasps and cries went up from the crowd. Berand continued, “Master Baggins is not well I’m afraid. The King is taking him and the others to Rivendell to seek the help of Lord Elrond Peredhil.”

The Gaffers relief that his son was all right was tempered by the news that Frodo was not. He questioned Berand trying to get more information but Berand had none to give. He bowed once more. “I beg your leave Mr. Gamgee. I really know no more than
what I have already told you and I must be getting back.”

“Of Course!” Hamfast said. “But please have Samwise send word when they get to Rivendell. We are all very concerned about Fro....Mr. Baggins.”

With a promise to deliver the message, Berand mounted his horse and rode off.

The Gaffer returned home to find Bell standing in the doorway. He wondered if she had been there all day. As soon as he walked up the steps Bell assaulted him with questions.

“Have you heard anything? Are they all right? Where are they? Did they find Frodo yet?”

“WOMAN! Calm yourself!” Hamfast said harshly. “I can’t tell you what I know if I can’t get a word in!”

Bell’s face crumpled into tears. “I’m sorry.” Bell whispered. “I’m worried about Samwise.” Hamfast immediately regretted his outburst, He pulled his wife to him and hugged her close. “I know” he whispered into her ear. “I’m sorry.” He pulled away and wiped the tears from her cheeks with his thumbs. “Sam and the boys are all right.” he stated gently guiding Bell to the sofa. Once seated he continued. They somehow met up with King Elessar..”

“The KING?!” Gasped Bell interrupting.

“Yes” Hamfast said. “They found Frodo,” He held up his hand before she could say anything. “The King sent a messenger. He told us that the boys were all right and that the King was taking Frodo to Rivendell. He’s in bad shape Bell.” Not another word passed between them. They just sat on the sofa holding each other until sleep overtook them.
