Lindir sat in his rooms, staring at the wall. He never imagined things would get to this point. And he never imagined he could be so lonely. He thought about the rumors he’d already heard, things that sounded to frightening and too detailed to be lies. Glorfindel was wasn’t being himself and it was all his fault.

He made a mental note to stop getting involved in gossip. It had been gossip that started all of this. Why couldn’t he believe Glorfindel when he said he was being faithful? He knew, deep down, that he trusted him. So why couldn’t he show it?

Trying not to feel too sorry for himself, Lindir stood and headed for the door. He hoped a nice walk in the night air would clear his thoughts and make sense of the things he’d done to himself and Glorfindel. And maybe he could figure out a way to fix it.

Haldir sat down across from Orophin at the small table. He watched his younger brother drink down another glass of wine before refilling his glass. His cheeks were flushed and his eyelids appeared heavy.

“Should you not consider that we are meeting Lord Elrond first thing in the morning?”

“I have, dear brother. That is why I am drinking.”

“It would be helpful if you were alert and not hung over.”

“I cannot help it. I am so worried!”

“About what?”

“About how Lord Elrond will react to all of this.”

“He can do nothing so bad that we cannot handle it. Orophin, we are not the ones in the wrong here. It is Glorfindel that should be worried. Not you. Not Erestor. And no matter what happens in the morning, Erestor will be better off in the end.”

“Even if he has to leave his home?”

“Yes. He will be sad and hurt at first, but he will not have Glorfindel violating him any longer. And maybe someone can help Glorfindel, too. Is a good elf, a good warrior, and this is not like him. Something is wrong. And he needs help.”

“I know. But he is not my concern right now. His well being the farthest thing from my mind.”

Haldir smiled. “I know. But you need to think of Erestor’s well being in the future. If we say nothing, will he ever be safe?”

“As usual, you are right. But it does not make it any easier.”

“Nor will all of this wine. Go to bed. Sleep off the damage you have already done, and maybe in the morning you will be ready for all of this.”

Melpomaen ran his fingers over the tops of the freshly closed flowers in the vast garden. He envied them, being able to sleep now that the sun had gone down. He did not regret agreeing to accompany the three elves to see Lord Elrond in the morning, but he was not one for confrontation. And he worried about the outcome. Although, he kept reminding himself, Lord Elrond is always fair, it will be no different in this situation.

But it did not help to ease his worries, nor did it take him to his bed easily. Sighing, he decided he must attempt some form of sleep. Turning from the flowers, he walked back in the direction he just come from, back towards his own rooms.

He did not get far. Stopping in his path, he swore his heart ceased to beat as he made eye contact with Lindir. Since the rumors had started, he had done his best to avoid this elf, and now they were face to face.

“Go-Good evening, Lindir.”

“Good evening, Melpomaen. In a hurry?”

“No. I cannot sleep. What troubles you?”

“Glorfindel. May I speak with you for a moment?”

“Of course.”

The two elves walked side by side and sat together under a tree. The grass felt cold to the touch as Melpomaen steadied himself in his position. He felt like he would fall of the planet if he did not.

Lindir looked over at him. “Is there anything between you and Glorfindel? And please, be honest. I will not be angry with you.”

“No, Lindir, there is not. What you heard were rumors made up by bored elves to pass the time. If they knew of the trouble they were causing, they would not have started them.”

“I am unsure of that. Boredom does horrible things, but so does jealousy.”

“I know. I heard you left Glorfindel. I wish I could convince you otherwise. I have lost much because of these rumors, too.”

“Have you?”

“Oh yes. I had my eye on a very beautiful young girl, but she has turned against me since these rumors have begun.”

“You… you do not like males?”

“No. I prefer females. I have never really had an attraction to any males. Not that I would deny myself if I felt feelings for someone, but this has not been an issue yet.”

“Oh, I am such a fool!”

“Lindir, no. You did not know what to believe. If it had been me, I would have been confused, too.”

“Melpomaen, I drove him away. Everything that has happened, to me, to Glorfindel, to you, to Erestor… it is all because I cannot control my own jealousy!”

“You still have time.”

“For what?”

“To make right the wrongs. Lindir, Glorfindel loves you. Everyone in Imladris knows it. Including you. Go to him and tell him. Swallow your pride and tell him you are sorry.”

Lindir looked at Melpomaen for a long moment before smiling. He sighed and turned his eyes to the ground. “You are right. I will speak with him in the morning.”

Orophin peeled his eyes open when the first rays of light warmed his face. Groaning, he rolled over, intent on ignoring it and falling back to sleep. But his eyes locked on Haldir as he completed the slow turn over.

“Get up, my drunken brother. I warned you, did I not? Now go splash some water on your face. Lord Elrond awaits us.”

Groaning and mumbling curses under his breath, Orophin did as he was told. Once he was dressed and as awake as he could force himself to be, he joined his brother in the main room. “Erestor waits outside. Go to him.”

“You are coming?”

“Of course.”

The two brothers slowly left the room, Orophin using the walls of the hallway outside to steady himself. As he made his way towards the outside world he swore he would never touch another glass of wine until the world ended.

His eyes brightened as his eyes met with Erestor’s. They smiled at each other and Orophin picked up his pace, forgetting the throbbing his skull. No words were exchange as he reached out to embrace his love, pecking a kiss on his lips and smiling. “Good morning, my little one.”

“Good morning to you, my big one!”

Orophin laughed before meeting his eyes again, not yet letting go of his slender body. “Are you ready for this?”

“As ready as I will ever be.”

“No! Wait for me! I do not want to arrive alone!” The three elves turned to see Melpomaen running towards them.

“Do not worry!” Haldir laughed. “We will not forget you, of all elves!”

“Thank you! I do have some wonderful news, too. I could not wait to tell you!”

“What is it?” Erestor asked.

“I spoke with Lindir last night. We ran into each other in the garden. He is beside himself with guilt, and wants to take Glorfindel back. He told me he was going to speak with him this morning. Your problems may be over!”

“We still need to speak with Lord Elrond. Just in case they are not.”

“I agree.” Orophin released Erestor from his embrace and stepped back. “Let us get this over with.”
