Chapter 16
Glorfindel stretched as he came awake and then slowly untangled himself from Erestor. Sliding out of bed, he gently pushed Erestor back down, “Shh, melui (sweet), stay abed. I will just go and get us something to eat. I know how tired you are.”
Erestor thankfully lay back down, snuggling his pillow. Normally he would be up early so he could start his day, wanting to be done with his work by dinnertime so he could spend it with his hervenn (husband). Pushing the blankets down to his waist, he mumbled, “Glor, I am hot.”
Glorfindel looked down at his mate and stifled a groan, seeing how appealing Erestor looked lying there with the blankets riding low over his hip. Bending down, Glorfindel kissed his hervenn’s cheek then said, “I will open the balcony doors before I leave.”
It was about a half an hour after Glorfindel left that Erestor started getting an itching sensation on his scalp, as if someone was pulling on his hair. Thinking that it must be the breeze that was blowing in from the opened doors, Erestor just batted at his hair, trying to tuck it underneath him. Sighing after finally fixing the problem, he drifted back to sleep, but only for a few minutes before he felt the itching again.
Glorfindel walked into the bedchamber and after placing the food laden tray onto a table, he walked over to the bed only to come up short. His eyes widened as he saw his hervenn scratch his head and what was now trying to make a nest in Erestor’s hair. Coming to stand at the side of the bed, Glorfindel said, “Umm, melui, it looks like you have a visitor.”
Erestor turned at the sound of his mate’s voice only to come practically nose to nose with a furry gray critter. Yelping, Erestor sat up quickly, startled, and not the only one. The squirrel that had been quite contently making a burrow in amongst the Advisor’s dark soft locks, at Erestor’s scream and sudden movement, jumped two feet in the air and scampered to the end of the bed, making a tittering noise. Erestor held the blankets to his chest and stared at the squirrel, watching its tail twitch continuously.
Glorfindel chuckled, “You scared the poor thing, melui.”
“I scared him?!? He scared me! It was he that was in *my* hair, not the other way around,” Erestor said incredulously.
Glorfindel smiled as he went and grabbed a handful of peanuts out of the bowl that Erestor kept on his desk and handed them to his hervenn, “Here, why do you not feed him? He looks rather thin. He obviously likes you.”
Erestor stared at the nuts in his hand then sighed as he held one out to the squirrel who was still tittering away. After a few brief moments, the little creature crept forth and sniffed at the peanut before taking it from Erestor’s fingers. The Advisor could not stop the smile that came to his lips as he saw the squirrel chomp on the nut, its cheeks growing as the peanut disappeared inside its mouth. All of the sudden the squirrel scrabbled into Erestor’s lap and started to take the rest of the nuts out of his hand.
Glorfindel smiled as he set the food out onto the table, the banana pancakes with a fresh jar of peanut butter, eggs and ham, along with juice and tea. “Breakfast is ready, melui.”
Erestor’s stomach growled, finding himself quite famished. Placing the rest of the peanuts onto the bed, he urged the squirrel off his lap, “There you go. You finish your breakfast. It is time that I have mine.”
While the two of them broke their fast, Erestor having peanut butter on every morsel that he consumed, Glorfindel looked over to the bed and chuckled, “I think, melui, you have a new friend.”
Erestor looked over at the bed and sighed as he saw the squirrel curled up on top of his pillow, sound asleep. “I suppose so.”
“You know, you will have to give him a name. He does look a bit scrawny. Maybe you should have Elrond or Faelon look at him some time today just to make sure that he is healthy,” Glorfindel said as he finished his food.
Erestor nodded, “Yes, I will. Hmm, I am not too sure what to name him. I will need to think on it.”

Erestor smiled as he watched Pigen (Tiny) sit on the corner of his desk atop the bed that he had made for him. After he and Glorfindel finished breakfast and dressed, Erestor had taken the little squirrel to the healing wing to be checked out. After Faelon had given Pigen a clean bill of health, though advising that the little critter should be well fed, Erestor took the squirrel with him to his study.
Now they both were enjoying some peace and quiet after having visitors all morning. Erestor was scratching along with his quill, writing up some daily reports when he felt something rub against his leg. Peering down, he smiled, “Faron, well, hello there. How have you been, mellon nín (my friend)?”
Faron meowed and jumped up onto Erestor’s lap, purring as the dark-haired ellon (m. elf) scratched behind his ear. All was well for a couple of minutes until the feline spied the squirrel that was staring his way and he hissed. “NO! Faron! Bad kitty!” Erestor shouted as Faron scrambled atop the Advisor’s desk, causing papers to fly every which way and ink pots to tip over.
Erestor tried to grab hold of the cat, but he was too fast for him. Pigen barely managed to climb up to the top of a very tall bookshelf before the cat got his claws into him. Erestor took a hold of Faron by the back of the neck and held him firmly, “Now listen here, you naughty thing. You will leave poor Pigen alone. He is under my protection.”
Faron let out a pitiful meow as he looked forlornly up at Erestor, truly sad that he made the dark-haired ellon angry. Erestor sighed, “Faron, he is my friend. He will be staying with me for a while. You and the other cats will not harm him, do you understand? And you, you will not taunt the cats either,” he said up to Pigen who had been tittering down at Faron.
“Ada (Papa), is something wrong?”
Erestor turned to see Lostariel, holding his grandson, standing in the doorway. “Ai (Ah), elloth dithen (little flower), how nice to see you. I am fine, I am just playing mediator. Come, sit with me. Let me see my handsome Mírion.”
Lostariel smiled as she came in and sat down on the settee. When she looked up and saw the squirrel sitting on top of the bookshelf she said, “I see you have a new friend.”
Erestor nodded, “Yes, and Faron just found out.” He sat the cat down in the basket that he had appropriated for himself a while back and reached up to Pigen, “Come, it is all right. You are safe now.”
The squirrel’s tail twitched a few time as he stared at the cat before he scampered down and into Erestor’s waiting arms. Perching on the Advisor’s shoulder, Pigen started to groom the dark one’s hair. Lostariel chuckled, “He is so cute.”
Erestor reached up and petted Pigen before taking Mírion, who had been impatiently waiting for his Daerada (Granddaddy) to hold him. Kissing Mírion’s forehead, he asked, “How is he doing? He looks so big already.”
Lostariel stroked her ion’s (son’s) head and said, “He is doing very well, even sleeping through the night. And how are you, Ada?”
“I am doing fine, elloth, just a little tired and not to mention hungry most of the time,” he said, shaking his head.
“I remember what that is like. I swear, I thought by the time Mírion was born, he would be half grown already,” she smiled.
Erestor chuckled which caused Mírion to coo at his Daerada’s laughter. The Advisor smiled down at his grandson, tickling his little belly. They visited for a short while, talking about this and that, making plans to have dinner in a couple of days.
~~~~~~~~~~
Melpomaen moaned as Sídhon laved and nipped his collarbone. He fisted his hand in the Artist’s silver locks, bringing his lips up so he could plunder his meleth’s (love’s) mouth. The feel of Sídhon’s hands rubbing up and down his back was almost too much for Mel to take. It was getting harder and harder each time that they were together to hold himself back from claiming this ellon that held his heart and faer (soul), but he knew that he must until Istuion knew of and accepted their relationship.
Sídhon knew that this was madness. To keep kissing Mel like this, that one of these times, his will may very well crumble, but he could not seem to help himself. He reached down and cupped the scribe’s buttocks, rocking against him. So lost were they in their passion that they did not hear the outer door to his chambers open, or his name being called out. It was not until a shocked gasp was sounded inside the bedchamber, did they break apart, only to find a very upset Elfling, staring accusingly at the both of them.
Melpomaen quickly started buttoning the clasps of his robe as Sídhon took a step forward, “Ion…” he started to say, only to have Istuion run from the chamber. “What have I done?”
Mel laid his hand upon Sídhon’s arm and said, “Go after him, meleth. I think it is time that you tell him everything. I will go with you if you want me to.”
Sídhon turned and caressed Mel’s cheek and shook his head, “No, I need to do this alone. But do not worry, I will come and find you later.”
Melpomaen placed a kiss onto Sídhon’s palm then watched him go, hoping for the best. How he loved that ellon (m. elf) but he had also come to love Istuion. He could not, in all good conscience, have a relationship with Sídhon if Istuion was truly against it. Sending a quick prayer up to the Valar, he hurried to Erestor’s study, not wanting to be alone at that precise moment. If Sídhon should come back to him with sadness in his eyes, he did not know if he would have the courage to let him go if he were alone. He needed Erestor’s guidance.
After fleeing the chamber, nearly blinded by the tears that filled his eyes, Istuion came rushing down the steps that led out to a garden behind the Last Homely House. In his haste, he collided into Haldir, who called after the young ellon as he ran out into the garden.
Haldir frowned and followed the Elfling, finding him kneeling next to a tree, weeping. “Penneth (Young one), what is it? What is wrong?” he asked as he knelt down next to Istuion.
Istuion desperately wiped at his tears, shock and anger filling his mind. He could not believe what his Ada and Mel had been doing. How could his Ada betray his Adar (Father) like that? Suddenly his Ada was there, calling his name, and he turned, so his back was to him.
Sídhon’s eyes filled with tears as he saw his ion turn from him. After nodding to Haldir who stood and quietly left the garden, he took the Marchwarden’s place next to Istuion. Not knowing what to say, or how to start explaining, Sídhon closed his eyes and prayed to the Valar for guidance. His eyes snapped open when he heard his ion’s hushed accusation, demanding why he and Mel had been kissing each other.
“Istuion, I must confess something to you, something I should have told you a long time ago,” he said but faltered when his ion turned a tear-streaked face to him. A tear slipped down Sídhon’s cheek at the hurt and confusion in his Elfling’s eyes.
Istuion turned to his Ada and listened as he spoke of his Adar and their true relationship. More tears fell as he learned that his parents were not mates, that his Adar had not wanted him. Though he was young, Istuion’s mind still acknowledge the fact that even with this news, that he did not love his Ada any less. In fact, he loved him more for having to endure bearing an Elfling alone, for always putting him first. Little memories traipsed through him mind, of the unguarded moments when his Ada could not shield the loneliness in his eyes. Then new memories followed the ones since their arrival here in Imladris and how happy his Ada was, and now he knew why, Melpomaen.
Sídhon gasped as his ion threw his arms around his neck, hugging him tightly. He wept openly as he cried, “I am so sorry, penneth. Can you ever forgive me? I only wanted your happiness.”
Istuion squeezed his eyes shut as he said, “I love you, Ada! You have always put me first in everything. I am so happy that you finally have someone to love you. I…I am sorry. I should have realized something was wrong. I truly love Mel.”
Sídhon shuddered, so relieved by his ion’s words that he started to sob, having all the horrible versions of his confession evaporate from his mind. He hardly believed that it could be so easy, that Istuion would accept his confession and now having a new person in their family. Sitting back, he looked deeply into his ion’s eyes and asked, “Then you accept Mel into our circle. Penneth, we want to bind together but only if you are all right with it. Melpomaen insisted on that and I agreed also.”
Istuion smiled and nodded, “Yes, I would very much like him to be a part of our family. Do you think, that is, could I…?”
Sídhon frowned at his ion’s sudden uncertainty and asked, “What is it, penneth?”
“Would you be upset if I called him Adar, if he is all right with it? Do you think he would like me to call him that?”
Sídhon’s eyes widened as he said, “Istuion, I think Mel would like that very much, but only if you truly want to. He loves you very much.”
Istuion smiled brightly and he took his Ada’s hand as they walked back into the Last Homely House in search of the newest member of their family. They found the Scribe in Erestor’s study, quietly conversing with the Advisor. Upon entering the study, Istuion ran and threw his arms around Melpomaen and cried, “Adar!”
Melpomaen gasped as tears filled his eyes. He crushed Istuion to him, all the while staring at Sídhon who had a huge smile on his face and so much love in his eyes. By that night, as everyone retired to the Hall of Fire for the nightly songs and games, word had spread and many congratulations were being given to the newly made family. It was obvious to all who looked upon the new couple, that they were meant to be.
