Hobbitnapped

Chapter 16

Merry left Frodo and approached Sam. Pippin had persuaded him to sit on a log by the stream.

“Sam?” Sam slowly raised his eyes to Merry. “Sam are you all right?”

Sam’s only answer was the lowering of his eyes. Merry looked worriedly at Pippin.

“Its all my fault” Sam muttered. “I should have never left him alone.” “Its my fault, its my fault, its my fault” Sam repeated shaking his head slowly from side to side.

Merry knelt down in front of Sam so he could look him in the eye. “Sam, Its not your fault! You cannot blame yourself for what happened!!”

Sam just shook his head and kept repeating “Its my fault, its my fault, its my fault.”

The Captain of the Guard approached the group. “This one seems to be in shock. Was he close to the injured one?”

Pippin looked at the Captain. “His gardener and very close friend. These two have been to hell and back together.” Pippin reddened at what he had just said. “Beggin’ your pardon!” he added quickly.

The Captain chuckled and waved Pippin off. “I’ve heard and said worse myself!” he said with a wink. He knelt down next to Merry. “What is his name?”

“Samwise Gamgee, son of Hamfast.” Merry answered.

“Well Samwise Gamgee, my name is Jonas Feley. I do believe your friend here is correct. You cannot blame yourself.”

Jonas said Feley but Sam‘s hazy mind heard Ferny “Feley.” Sam said softly. “Feley.” he repeated looking up at the two in front of him. Sam’s eyes were glazed. Suddenly he launched himself off the log and before anyone could react Sam had his hands around Jonas’ neck.

“I’LL KILL YOU!!!!! I’LL KILL YOU FOR WHAT YOU DID TO FRODO!!!!”

“SAM, NO!!!!!” Merry and Pippin both screamed at the same time. They pulled at Sam’s arms trying desperately to break his hold. A few of the Guardsmen had returned with firewood, they saw what was happening, dropped the wood and drew their weapons. The Captain gave them a warning look and they held back.

“Sam....I’m not....the one who.....hurt.......your.....friend!” He was able to gasp out.

Pippin let go of Sam’s arm and grabbed him around the waist from behind. With a mighty push of his legs both he and Sam fell backwards. Breaking Sam’s hold on Jonas. The Captain quickly stood up rubbing his neck. Sam was struggling with Pippin.

“LET ME GO! I’LL KILL HIM!!!”

“SAM!” Merry yelled. “He is not Ferny! Ferny is dead! You killed him!”

“NO!!” Sam screamed. He twisted around and shoved Pippin down. He then made to run for Jonas again. Merry stopped him and Pippin grabbed him from behind again, pinning Sam’s arms to his sides.

“LET ME GO!!!!” Sam yelled.

Merry brought his arm up and slapped Sam hard across the face. Sam stopped fighting, his eyes seemed to focus again. “Mr. Merry? What happened?” Then Sam’s eyes rolled up into his head and he collapsed unconscious.

The Guardsmen approached the three hobbits immediately. Merry turned to face them. “Don’t you touch him!” he warned.

“He is to be arrested for attacking the Kings Guard!” The closest one said to Merry.

“NO!” Jonas yelled harshly. “Leave him be, he was in shock. He did not know what he was doing.”

The Guardsmen looked at the Captain in confusion.

“Leave him be I said. He is not to be arrested.” The Guardsmen backed away and bowed to Jonas. They then gathered up the firewood they had collected and made a fire.

Aragorn had come back to the group closely followed by the two who had been sent to watch over him. He caught the very end of the action by the stream. He approached the captain.

“Captain Feley! I thought I told you I did not need protecting!”

“You did sir” Jonas replied with a slight bow. “But it is my job to see that nothing happens to you.”

Aragorn heaved a sigh and rolled his eyes. “The trappings of being a King.” he muttered to himself. “What happened here” Aragorn asked bringing his attention back to the Captain.

Jonas and the two hobbits filled Aragorn in on what happened. Aragorn ran his hand through his hair. “I should have anticipated this. Of course Sam would feel it was his fault.”

“But it isn’t.” Pippin protested.

“I know Pippin.” Aragorn said to him. “We must make sure Sam knows this too.”

Aragorn then turned to his Guard and addressed them as a whole. “I hereby pardon Master Samwise Gamgee from any and all actions he has done on this day. Is that understood?” The Kings Guard bowed to him.

Aragorn picked Sam up and carried him over to where Frodo laid. He put Sam next to Frodo and covered them both with the cloak.

“Merry.” he called. Merry came over. “Set some water on the fire to boil. I found some Athelas, it will do both of them some good."

Merry did as Aragorn said. He soon returned with a pot full of boiling water carefully balanced between two sticks because it was too hot to handle. Aragorn had leveled a small patch of ground and instructed Merry to set the pot there careful not to spill any of its contents. As soon as Merry set the pot down Aragorn dropped Athelas leaves into it. The area was soon permeated with the soothing fragrance of the plant. Aragorn waited for the water to cool slightly. Spending the time murmuring in Elvish to Frodo and Sam. Merry and Pippin joined the Guardsmen by the fire leaving their friends in Aragorn’s care.

As soon as the water was cool enough, Aragorn began washing Frodo again. He washed the dried blood and dirt from his chest, abdomen and groin then moved to Frodo’s legs. Aragorn removed the dirty cloth that Ferny had tied around Frodo’s leg wound. The leg was severely infected. All Aragorn could do for it was to clean it and put a new bandage on it. He used a strip of cloth he had cut from his cloak for this.

Aragorn then moved down and washed Frodo’s ankles and feet. His ankles were in no better shape than his wrists had been. Aragorn finished washing Frodo’s legs and turned him over to see if there were any injuries to his back. As soon as he did, Aragorn jumped up and exclaimed.

“BY ELBERETH!!!! What did that monster do?!”

Merry and Pippin were at Aragorn’s side in a flash. Pippin cried out, turned and buried his face in Merry’s shoulder. Merry just closed his eyes and held Pippin tight.

Frodo’s back was a mass of welts and dried blood.
