Chapter 16 - the gift
The next morning Elrond entered my room with his usual professional smile
"Good morning, Legolas," he said and closed the door behind him.
"Good morning, my Lord," I answered and sat up straight. I brushed my hair from my face and rubbed my sleepy eyes.
Out of pure habit I dragged my nightshirt up so the elven lord would be able to feel around on my huge belly. He pushed gently as he smiled to himself. "The child has turned. I think it will be ready soon," he said and looked up at me while gesturing for me to drag my shirt down once more.
"I'm glad to hear that Lord Elrond." I dragged the covers up to my shoulders to keep some of the warmth of sleeping in the winter cold room.
"As am I," Elrond said with a strange facial expression. "Well then, Legolas, since you seem fit and the child is healthy I will return to my duties." The elven lord turned the doorknob, "Oh I almost forgot, Haldir has requested new garments for you, which he wished to bring himself later today," he smiled.
"Thank you once again Lord Elrond," I said and nodded.
He smiled a strained smile and walked out the door. I lay down on the bed again and closed my eyes. My mind raced. I could not help but to think of all the events leading up to this. I wondered where it had all started, where had I left my course? What had I done that was so grave that the Valar themselves decided to punish me with this?
As I drifted off to sleep I could hear my fathers voice on that cursed day. I will never forget that tone, it sounded like a million unshed tears. He had dragged me gently aside and sat down, telling me that my mother had sailed for the undying lands. As this memory emerged I felt a hard ball of sorrow form in my throat. I had kicked and screamed at him, cursed him for being too vague, and his love for being too shallow for her to stay.
As I lie here I regretted my harsh words, but back then I was determined to show the world that I was not like my father. I thought he had taken all I loved from me. And so I had bedded his servant. Poor Edwen, he had been a piece in a twisted chess game, and he had no idea.
The only thing I had proved with this was that I was more heartless than Thranduil. Perhaps I didn't command others lives, but I quickly found I could control their hearts, and that I didn't care. It was all fun, every single lover was a jest; a way to show my father that he would never betray my heart like he had my mothers.
So I ended up with loving no one. I had been fascinated and thrilled, but I knew now I had never been in love.
Perhaps this was why the Valar had decided to punish me. I had hurt many a young elf, and had never cared about the consequences for them. I cared only for what had been in it for me.
I smiled to myself in my state of half sleeping.
It *had* been fun. I would never regret that part. But as I lay here it accrued to me that I had been a hundred times moearteartless than my father. I had not, as my father, ruthlessly commanded their life's, but I had carelessly played with their hearts.
Why had I done that? I could not understand it now. it it really been that important to me?
I was still occupied with these thoughts when I heard the door open and someone walk in.
"There you are," I hard Elladan's voice.
I braced myself and sat up slowly. "What brings you here Prince Elladan?" I was very careful with my choice of words. I did not wish to aggravate him
"I came to see you," he said calmly and sat down in a chair next to my bed.
"Oh," I whispered. "Why Prince Elladan?"
"I wanted to tell you that father has punished Elrohir for knowing the likes of you," he said and blinked.
"P-punished?" I bit my lip. "Oh my, the family meeting!" I suddenly understood why he had been acting so strange.
"Yes, punished," Elladan said venomously.
"B-but why?" I whispered, though I felt I already knew the answer.
"He told father that he sired your child, and that this is the reason he should keep you here, and not return you to Mirkwood."
I sat up straight. "He did what!?" I yelled.
"Are you dumb *and* deaf?" Elladan said, still looking calm.
I shook my head, "No, Prince Elladan." I carefully looked up at the elder twin again, and I hoped I did not do something to make him angry. Apparently I had not, for he leaned back in the chair looking more relaxed.
"Now Legolas, I tell you once more - leave Imladris. Run home to your father with your bastard child. Cry, plea, and beg. I do not care!" He looked straight at me, "But you will leave, for you have done nothing but destroy our family, and I will not have it."
I was at loss for words. "But Elrohir," I managed to whisper.
"ill ill go on without you. He will soon forget you ever existed.
I
I felt the tears again, and I wiped them off in my sleeve. "Why are you so hateful Elladan?" I asked, for once looking straight at him as though we were. "What have I done to you to make you hate me so?"
Elladan's mouth became a thin line and his eyes flashed dangerously. "He is my twin," he hissed, "and *you* have done nothing but to bring him sorrow and trouble."
"That is not true! Elrohir loves me," I yelled at Elladan, and I instantly felt my mistake as the sting from his slap across my face made me gasp in pain.
"What in all of..." a voice roared.
Both Elladan and I looked up to see the huge elf with the golden hair in the door, followed by Haldir.
"Glorfindel!" Elladan stood up, "It is not what it looks like."
"I just *saw* you slap Legolas," Glorfindel said icily.
I could see Haldir wanting to move around Glorfindel and into the room, but he stayed on his spot and waited for them to finish arguing.
"But Elrohir…" Elladan said and pointed at me.
"Elrohir is old enough to make his own decisions. You may be the elder twin by two minutes, but that does not make you wiser," Glorfindel crossed his arms over his chest.
"But his judgement is clearly not sound," Elladan hissed and stomped in the floor as a child.
"Elladan, look at yourself," Glorfindel said with raised brow. "You are acting like a spoiled brat, not like the eldest son of the house of Elrond."
Elladan hissed and swept past Glorfindel and Haldir in a dramatic move.
"I am sorry," Glorfindel said to me.
"Don't be Lord Glorfindel," I whispered, nure ure what to say.
"Never the less, please excuse me. I will go and have a little talk with the childlike son of Elrond." Glorfindel said with a smile. He turned and nodded to Haldir before he left.
Haldir hurried into the room and closed the door behind him, "Legolas!" He said and smiled "I missed you."
I opened my arms and invited him for an embrace. "I missed you too," I said and smiled back.
Haldir sat down on the bed and melted into my arms. "You look healthy and happy," I said with a smirk.
Haldir got free from my arms and sat up straight. "I am," he said and blushed ever so slightly.
"Then I trust Erestor is good to you?" I winked at my friend.
Haldir blushed ferociously. "He is," he said impishly.
"Congratulations my friend," I smiled widely.
"I brought you this. " He laid a bundle of clothes on the bed. "Erestor insisted on giving you something, but I promised not to look."
"Send him my thanks," I said as I caressed Haldir's cheek
