Melpomaen looked up with a start as he heard Haldir rush into the library. He stopped before the desk and smiled down and the confused looking elf and smiled, realizing how his rushing must look to him.

“Welcome, Haldir. Is something wrong?”

“No, not really. I do apologize for startling you.”

“’Tis fine, and it is not hard to do, I am afraid!”

“Do you have a moment?”

“I am sure I can spare some time. What troubles you?”

“I am only looking for some clarity of things. As you well know by now, my brother has taken a liking to Erestor.”

“Oh, yes. Word travels fast in these parts. I do hope they were not looking to keep it a secret.”

“No, I do not believe they were. But some parts, possibly. Such as the fact that my brother wishes to remain here in Imladris to be with Erestor.”

“Really? Well that is a secret well kept, I must say.”

“Melpomaen, I do not know Erestor well. And my brothers are all I have in this world. As you can imagine, I am very concerned for him, not really physically, as I know he can take care of himself. But emotionally. Can you tell me anything about Erestor?”

“It depends. What are you most concerned about?”

“Is he known to play mind games with people?”

Melpomaen looked at him confused and thought for a moment. “Not really. I mean, I have never seen him with anyone. But as for those around him in a casual or even friendly manner, he has not. I do not think games are his way.”

“How about lying?”

“No, nothing there either. Erestor is very blunt and tells you what is on his mind. He has never lied to me about anything, that I know of anyway. I was once late to the library on a very important day, and I tried to make up a story to soft my reprimand. He knew I was not being truthful, and at the moment he told me to always tell the truth because it is far more interesting.”

Haldir laughed. “Yes, that is true, I will admit. Thank you, Melpomaen, that is really all I need to know.”

“Haldir? Has this anything to do with Glorfindel?”

“Glorfindel? Why would you say that?”

“I am not exactly oblivious to what has been going on. And I have noticed how nervous Erestor is all of a sudden. And, to be honest, I have been here all day long but I do not think Erestor saw me.”

Haldir leaned forward, crossing his arms on the desk before him. “You were here? All day?”

“Yes. Erestor never spoke to me, I am afraid, which is why I believe he did not know I was here. Glorfindel had come in some time earlier, but he did not see me either. To be honest, the warriors frighten me a little, so I usually do not approach them. When he came in, I busied myself in the isles at the other end of the library.”

“Did you see what transpired between them?”

“Oh yes. When I saw Glorfindel push him into the wall, I hurried for the door, thinking I could get Lord Elrond to come and help, or anyone, for that matter. But before I made it out, I heard him cry out and saw Erestor run from the isle. So I hid again, knowing Glorfindel would follow and I did not want him to see me.”

Haldir smiled at him and stood. “Now THAT was all I really needed to know.”

Peaking his head into the room, Haldir spotted the two elves sitting on the bed, Orophin stretched out and Erestor beside, seated sideways. He smiled and walked in.

“I do hope I am not interrupting anything?”

“No, not at the moment, but had you given me ten more minutes, maybe.”

Erestor blushed at Orophin’s words before pushing his shoulder playfully. He looked back at Haldir. “You are interrupting nothing, and would not have no matter when you came in!”

“Oh, ouch!” Haldir laughed.

“So, dear brother,” Orophin said, folding his arms behind his head. “Give us the details. What did you do to him? You need not give us everything you do not wish, just let me know if you need an alibi!”

“Nothing of that sort. I only got his story. However, I also discounted his story shortly after. I am not sure where to go from here, it is up to Erestor.”

“You did not believe him?” Erestor asked.

“Well. I will be honest with you, Erestor. He was convincing. And I am sorry to admit it, but I almost believed him. I decided to do some research into the both of you. Forgive me, but we hardly know one another.”

“It is alright, I understand.”

“I decided I would ask Lindir some questions about Glorfindel, which I have not yet done, and may not need to do. But I went to Melpomaen to ask about you.”

“He does not know me as well as many think, you know.”

“He knows you well enough, Erestor. He has been in the library working as hard as you are all of this time.”

“I expected as much.”

“Yes, well, he has been there since before you went this morning.”

“What are you saying?” Orophin asked, leaning forward.

“I am saying, we have a witness.”

Erestor stood up, his cheeks bright red from embarrassment. “He… he saw everything?!”

“Yes. You actually ran right past him when you made your escape, he was heading off to get Lord Elrond to come to your aid.”

“Oh, my.”

“Now, Erestor, this is where the decision is yours. I am certain he would speak on your behalf, as he did to me, if you wish to bring this to Lord Elrond’s attention.”

“I do not think that is necessary.”

“Think on it for a little while. I do not wish to harm anyone, especially not Glorfindel. If it comes to a confrontation, I am unsure of how my luck would hold out. But Lord Elrond may be able to put a stop to it.”

“But I am afraid of how he would, Haldir. I am not exactly popular in Imladris, but being responsible for some horrible punishment of any kind against Glorfindel would make my life here so difficult I may have to leave!”

“Erestor, you would have a home with me, in Lothlorien, if it ever came to that. You know that.” Orophin said, placing a hand on Erestor’s shoulder.

Erestor turned to him and smiled. “I know that, my love, but this is my home. And being chased from it is not something I desire.”

“You see only the worst for yourself,” Haldir interrupted. “But I do not think it will be that bad. Glorfindel has not harmed you, and we can speak with Lord Elrond stressing that fact. The punishment he delivers may be no worse than ordering Glorfindel to remain as far from you as possible.”

“I do not know, Haldir.”

“It will never stop if you do not alert him. And I am leaving soon, so I will not be here to help you. If Glorfindel takes this too far and Orophin defends you, most will not jump to his side in defense. It will be Glorfindel’s word over both of yours.”

Erestor crossed his arms in front of himself, rubbing his elbows as he thought hard. “I guess I do not have a choice. Orophin, will come with me?”

“Of course.”

“Good. I will tell Melpomaen of what we are going to do. The four of us shall sit with Lord Elrond tomorrow.”
