“I don’t understand,” said Glorfindel. He held his newest child in his arms, stroking the little head with gentle finger tips. “There wasn’t a single red-head in my family!” The blond once again stroked the little baby’s head, which was covered in a soft fuzz of glaringly red hair.
“Don’t worry about it, my friend,” Elrond said soothingly. “You need to rest. This birth was much harder on you than your others-”
“I had a brother with red hair,” Erestor interrupted quietly from his perch by the window where he stared absently out over Imladris. “Well…three brothers, actually.”
“You had three brothers?” Glorfindel asked incredulously. “Why did you not *tell* me you had a family. We’ve been together for this long, and *now* you tell me-”
“I had three brothers with red hair,” Erestor cut in softly. “There were others besides them.”
“This-this is just too much right now,” Glorfindel said, sounding tired. Elrond made shushing noises and took the tiny newborn from Glorfindel’s arms.
“Sleep, Glorfindel. You can sort this out later when you have recovered.”
The blond shook his head in confusion, but he lay down anyway. His body was too exhausted to stay awake much longer. Elrond took the baby to its father, and Erestor took the little bundle gently and lovingly. Elrond smiled at the scrunched little face. “Her hair is as red as a fox’s.”
Erestor stroked the little head as he heard Glorfindel’s breathing turn deep as he fell into reverie. “Is that what we should call you, little one?” he queried the baby. “Shall you be our little Fox?”
Elrond nodded his head in agreement. “The fox is an honorable creature to be named for. They are swift, crafty, and intelligent. All fine attributes for a young child of such a noble line.”
“Anyway,” said Erestor, “it’s my turn to choose a name. He got to name the *last* two.”
They stood is silence for long moments, watching Glorfindel and Fox sleep. It was Elrond who broke the silence when he asked, “When will you tell him of your past, my friend? He deserves to know.”
Erestor shook his head. “If I have my way, he will never know. I do not wish to taint him with my past.”
“One day we will travel to Valinor, Erestor. How…I mean-I hate to ask but…”
“I have been denied the white shores, Elrond. When the time comes, I will escort my beloved and my children to Valinor. I know that I shall receive the wrath of the Valar for daring to return to the shores that I sullied with the blood of my kin, but I need to know that my family is safe upon the sacred shores. Do you understand?”
Elrond looked into Erestor’s eyes, and he saw determination there. Determination to do whatever it took to ensure his family was safe. Even if he had to defy the edicts of the Valar to do so.
“I understand, my friend. Let it be known that, in my mind at least, you have paid your dues.”
Erestor nodded his head in acknowledgement and smiled. “You always were to forgiving, little one.”
Elrond clasped Erestor’s shoulder, as it was currently impossible to embrace him. The pair stood quietly as they watched over the sleep of the newborn and tired warrior. For now, Erestor was content. He had more than he had ever hoped for: friends, a beautiful husband, and a growing family. There was nothing more perfect than this, and it saddened him to know that, no matter how much he wished for it, this was not forever. Therefore, he would treasure every memory and keep each moment close to his heart. It would comfort him when all was lost.
