Chapter 14
Title: Reading Between the Lines (14/?)
Rating: NC-17
Pairing: Orophin/Erestor, Glorfindel/Lindir
Warnings: AU, anal, oral, rimming, sarcasm, bad pick up lines
Disclaimer: If they were mine I would be rich. Seeing as I am broke, they are obviously not mine. But good lord do they make dreams worth while!
Summary: Orophin's first visit to Imladris is fairly uneventful and boring until he stumbles upon a certain black haired advisor in the library. Now his goal is to win Erestor's heart before he heads home again.

Erestor slumped at the small desk in his room, writing faster than he should have been. He stopped to crinkle his nose from time to time at the illegible writing looking up at him, but continued to work as fast as he could.
“You should have left that for Melpomaen.”
“I cannot! This report is due tomorrow and Elrond will be very upset if it is not done.”
“And you do not trust him to complete it?”
“He has enough to do.”
Orophin stared at the back of Erestor for a long moment before shrugging and going back to his book. The words there were making no sense, so he closed it and put it back on the night table. Sighing, he looked over at Erestor again.
“Are you sure you are not trying to avoid the topic at hand?”
“What topic is that, Orophin?”
“Glorfindel.”
“Of course not. I am busy.”
“And work keeps your mind off of what Haldir is doing to him.”
“Orophin, your brother will not harm him. And besides… maybe he would deserve it if he did.”
He dropped his quill finally and turned to look at Orophin, now staring at him with a raised eyebrow.
“Deserves? This is a side I have not seen yet, Erestor.”
“I did not mean it in such a way. I wish no harm on him. But… I am so confused!”
“About what?”
“About… everything! Orophin, I have pursued him for so long and now I have… I have found love somewhere else. Why does he choose now to come for me?”
“Is that all? Why, that is easy to answer. He is rather jealous.”
“He was never attracted to me.”
“Maybe so, but you were always there. And he knew how you felt. It made him feel good. And he knew that if he wanted to, he could have you. Now that is no longer so. You have found a mate and you are no longer there for him. He does not have the option of having you anymore, and he wants that option back.”
Erestor looked at him for a long moment before smiling and standing. “You are smarter than you look.”
“That is exactly what I have been trying to tell you since we met!” he smiled back.

Haldir paced outside for some time, getting his thoughts together before confronting Glorfindel. Their friendship was over now, but something bit at him about doing this. His brother’s interest in Erestor had not been there long. And as much as he wished him happiness and love, he feared the end to come eventually and friendships lost for nothing.
But then again, Glorfindel was going overboard. Erestor was becoming more and more afraid with each passing day, and while he could not convince himself that Glorfindel had it in him to hurt another elf, he knew the words needed to be spoken. Whether Erestor stayed with Orophin was beside the point. He was still a fellow elf and he was still afraid.
Haldir took a deep breath and entered the halls before him, knowing his way to Glorfindel’s room like the way to his own. As he walked, he thought of the friendship they had once had. He still wore the necklace Glorfindel had had made for him when word reached Imladris that he and Celeborn were bound. He thought of drunken nights sitting on the floor and laughing about the soldiers they trained. It was long gone, never to be regained. But the loss hurt none the less. The loss all because of an elf he hardly knew, that loved his brother dearly.
Reaching the door, he stopped before it, closing his eyes as he breathed in deep and let it out slowly. He could feel his hands shaking and he wanted nothing more than to calm his nerves.
Deciding the time was right, he knocked firmly on the door and waited. Within a moment, Glorfindel answered the knock. The two warriors stood before each other in silence, staring at the other.
Glorfindel finally nodded a welcome and gestured for Haldir to enter. He did so, wincing to himself as the door closed behind him.
“I take it Erestor came to you with some sort of overblown story as to what I did to him.”
“Overblown? I hardly think his tears were overblown, Glorfindel.”
“No matter. What has he told you that I have done? Was it that I tried to rip his clothes from him? Did I throw him down on a table and try to have my way with him?”
“You pinned him to a wall until he put his knee to your groin.”
“Pinned? Hardly! I leaned in for a kiss, and nothing more. It was he that pulled me to the wall.”
“And why should I believe your story over his?”
“Because you know me. You know I would never do such a thing, especially not to someone who is not practiced in warrior skills. He would not have a chance against me, and I know this. Therefore, I would not scare him in such a way.”
“I thought I knew you. But I am not so sure of that anymore.”
“You know me better than most, maybe even better than Lindir.”
“And what of his tears?”
“He cried from guilt. He knew what he did and ran from me. But he fears losing your brother, the only elf on Arda who wants him. He wanted to get to him before anyone else did and he made up a story of me attacking him. Come, Haldir. If I had pinned him to a wall, do you honestly think he would have gotten away from me so easily?”
Haldir stared at him for a moment, lost in his own thought. What Glorfindel said made sense. He had never known him to be aggressive in this manner towards anyone before, and if he had chosen to be aggressive with Erestor… he would not have gotten away from him so easily. Haldir shook his head.
“Whatever may have happened, just keep in your mind that my brother has decided to stay behind to make a life with Erestor. I support his decision and will defend them both to any ends. I want you to leave Erestor alone. His adoration for you has finally waned after years of you turning your back on him. Let him go, Glorfindel. The price is too high.”
“And you believe you could stop me if I wanted him?”
“I do.”
“You know of my skill.”
“And you know of mine. I may have never slain a Balrog, but dropping you will not be a challenge for me. As you said, I know you better than anyone. Good day, Glorfindel.”

Walking back to his brother and Erestor, Haldir thought long and hard about what Glorfindel had said. There was merit to his words. He did not know Erestor well enough to know if he was the sort to lie in such a way, but his trust in the little dark haired elf was dipping lower than he hoped. He made a mental note to observe in silence and learn as much as he could about the little elf before leaving his brother behind with him.
But he knew he could not completely trust Glorfindel anymore, either. He needed help.
Turning fast on his heels, Haldir walked towards the library. There were two elves that could help him understand them both and who could help him find out what was happening now. He would stop to talk with Melpomaen and on the way back he would pay a visit to Lindir.
