Part 12

Road to Lorien, 1479 T.A.

Traveling to Lorien on horseback turned out to be a problem at first. Everytime the numbing effect of the salve lessened, Legolas was in great pain. But Lindir had been informed about what had happened and as soon as any discomfort showed on the younger elf’s face, they rested, so Legolas could apply the salve anew.
To travel without at least a few warriors to escort them was not without risk, but Lindir had persisted to do so. They were cautious, whenever the wind brought a foreign sound to their ears, they dismounted and hid in the trees. Furthermore they avoided the great roads and passes if possible. They weren’t in a hurry.
For 8 days now they were on their way and Legolas’ backside was healed, but his heart still ached. This would be their last night in the open, the next day they would reach the golden wood.
Legolas readied his bedroll near the fire.
“Have you ever been in Lorien, Lindir?”
“Yes, I’ve seen the golden wood before. It’s one of the most beautiful places in arda.”
“Do you think, they will like me there?”
“For sure they will... and you already know Rumil, don’t you?”
“Yes, Rumil is nice... he told me so much of his brothers, I can’t wait... to meet them.”
// ...to see Haldir again...// he mentally added.
How would the Galadhrim react to see him again after so many years. For sure he would be shocked to find, the little girl, he danced with, had turned into a young warrior. Oh, he had to make sure that Haldir wouldn’t reveal his identity to others...
Lindir started humming a little melody, Legolas stretched on his bedroll.
“Wake me in a few hours, that I can take the next watch...”
“Alright, but now sleep!”

At the horizon they could already see the great mallorn trees.
“That’s the border of Lorien.” Lindir said. “As soon as we reach the wood, we will be watched. The Galadhrim guard their borders well. It’s impossible to enter Lorien without their permission.”
Legolas smiled, he thought of Haldir. Ever since the feast in Greenwood, a picture of the Galadhrim had been engraved in his mind. His splendid hero, the very kind elf with the those wonderful dark blue eyes, that showed nothing but love. With every minute that they neared Lorien his anticipation grew, but also his fear. What if Haldir would be disappointed, that he was not Amariel anymore...

They reached the wood in the late afternoon and as soon as they walked beneath the great mallorn-trees, Legolas felt eyes upon him. Only a moment later, an elf dropped to the ground in front of them. Lindir and Legolas dismounted.
“You entered the golden wood, tell me your names and your business.” The guard said with a stern voice.
“My name is Lindir from Imladris. I have been send here to deliver some of my Lady Celebrians belongings to her mother.”
Another guard stepped out of the shadow of a large tree and Legolas heart stopped beating when he saw, it was nobody else but Haldir.
“It’s alright, Erodin. The Lady is awaiting him. Mae govannen, Lindir. It’s good to have you here again, even if it is at this sad occasion. Who is your companion?”
Legolas caught his breath when Haldir came to stand right in front of him. Their gazes met and for a short moment, there was some kind of magic in the air, as if the world simply stopped turning. He felt like being back in the hall in Greenwood again, swirling over the dancefloor in Haldirs arms, gazing into those darkblue eyes, breathing the marchwardens scent...
But then Haldir broke eye contact. Legolas shook his head and was back in Lorien again and he was facing no longer the hero of his past, but the proud marchwarden, who seemed to draw superiority with every breath.
Haldir turned to Lindir once more and nodded his head towards Legolas.
“Does he have a name?”
“Of course he has. How rude of me, I’m sorry, Haldir. This is Legolas from Greenwood.”
Haldir’s eyes widened slightly at that.
“Greenwood – how... interesting.” He cleared his throat and was immediately back to his controlled self. Bowing towards Legolas he said:
“I’m Haldir, marchwarden of Lorien... And now I’ll take you to Caras Galadhon, the Lady is waiting!”
The Galadhrim gestured for them to follow, but Legolas didn’t move. He felt as if his world had been shattered.
//Haldir doesn’t recognize me! It had been the most precious moment in my life, and he doesn’t even remember me?//
That was something, he never had considered. He had been so sure Haldir would recognize him at once.
Lindir softly nudged his side now, gestured for him to start walking. For hours they followed Haldir through the trees. Legolas couldn’t tear his gaze from the marchwardens proud back. He still found the elf adorable, but something about Haldir didn’t seem to agree with his memory of the warden.
//That look...// he thought. //There’s no love in his eyes anymore. He’s so... arrogant, so cold. I wonder, what happened!//
Haldirs voice shook him from his musings.
“Here we are... this is Caras Galadhon, heart of Elvendom on earth and the home of Lady Galadriel and Lord Celeborn.”

Somewhere between Mithlond and Imladris

Elladan stood alone on a hill, scanning the area around. Everything seemed peaceful, but he wasn’t willing to take any risk. He checked on his bow, arrows, sword...
Five days since Celebrian sailed west. Ever since learning of his mothers decision, Elladan had become withdrawn. He had not once voiced his feelings or showed any emotion at all. He couldn’t mourn for her, couldn’t cry – all he felt was hatred.
When Elrohir neared, Elladan didn’t turn around.
“You should be resting, muindor. We have positioned guards for the night, they will warn us in time, should anything happen. Come to the fire with me, let’s stay with father and Arwen.”
“You can go and rest – I will stand watch!”
“This is madness, Elladan, the third night in a row... you NEED some sleep.”
“Can you give me your whetstone? I need to sharpen my sword again...”
“Did you even listen to a single word I said?!” Elrohir yelled at his twin.
“What do you want me do do?” Elladan asked in a calm voice.
“I want you to LIVE! We will reach Imladris in a few days – what happens then? Will you go on to withdraw from me, adar, every one? Talk to me – you know I understand how you feel. I ALSO saw my mother sail. Do you think I don’t feel the loss, that I’m not in as much despair as you.” Elrohir grabbed his brother by the collar of his tunic and this way forced him to make eye contact.
“But we have to go on. You may mourn her passing, you may cry, if you want you can be angry and yell at me, beat me if it makes you feel better – but LIVE and don’t shut me out. I cannot bear it - saes...”
Elrohir broke down in his brothers arms, the older twin’s face still showed no sign of emotion. Shooking his head in defeat, Elrohir turned to go back to the others, when his twin spoke in a barely audible voice:
“Ride with me!”
“Beg your pardon?”
“Ride with me. I cannot come home with you and continue as if nothing has happened, I CANNOT, Elrohir. I will see you save in Imladris but then I will go... I will hunt down every damned orc in arda... with or without you at my side!”
“You are serious with that?”
“Nothing you can say might stop me!”

Lorien

Upon entering the city, they were greeted politely by all elves who passed their way. Legolas gazed wondering around. Caras Galadhon was a stunning sight – for sure one of the most beautiful places in arda. The moon shone through the trees and it seems as if the foliage was glowing silver.
Suddenly Legolas heard a familiar voice calling for him.
“Legolas, was a pleasant surprise to see you here!”
“Rumil – it’s so good to see you.”
“That sounds as if my brother was once again his charming self... What are you doing here?”
“I accompanied Lindir... and if the Lady agrees I will stay for a while.”
“Oh, I’m sure she will. Are you going to see her now? I will come with you! On our way there you can tell me about the twins. How do they fare? I’m so sorry for their loss – Celebrian did nothing to deserve such a fate. Actually no one does. I wish I could help...
Ehm, Legolas... It may sound selfish to ask this now, in this situation, but this question is a burning issue to me: Does Elrohir speak of me sometimes?”
Legolas had to smile. He was really delighted to see Rumil again. They had become friends, when the young Galadhrim had visited Imladris for the twins coming of age. Back then he had remined Legolas of Haldir so much, the Greenwood prince always searched the warriors nearness. But it was obvious, that Rumils interests lay with the younger Peredhel twin.

When they met with the Lord and the Lady of Lorien, Legolas felt a little nervous at first, but one friendly gaze of Galadriel was enough to calm him.
Lindir handed Lord Celeborn some letters and with a bow placed a bundle, containing Celebrians brush and mirror, a ring and a bracelet, heirlooms of her family, in the Lady’s lap.
“I thank you for bringing me those memorabilia of my beloved daughter. I hope you will stay some time and please these woods with your sweet voice.”
“No mylady, actually I planned to return to Imladris the day after tomorrow. But with your permission, I would leave Legolas in your care.”
“But of course – it’s a pleasure to have him here! I hope you will enjoy your stay, Legolas! We will find an adequate quarter for you at once!”
“With your leave, mylady...” Rumil said, “since Orophin bonded last spring and moved to his own talan, his room is unused. If Legolas would like that, he could stay with me and Haldir.”
Legolas nodded and Galadriel smiled pleased.
“Well, it’s settled then. You will stay with Rumil and Haldir. Welcome to the Golden wood, Legolas of Greenwood!”
And in is mind Legolas heard her adding: “I saw what happened to you, child. May the mighty mallorn trees help you forget your pain...”

While Legolas went with Lindir to fetch his belongings, Haldir grabbed Rumil at his tunic.
“You could have at least asked me, before offering Orophins room!”
“I didn’t thought you had objections... Why didn’t you say something?”
“In front of the Lady, I could hardly do so!!!”
“Don’t you like Legolas? Well, you will come to like him... he’s such a nice elf.”
“That he may be, but I have better things to do, then to babysit an elfling.”
“Legolas can hardly be counted as an elfling anymore... and if you don’t want to spend your free time with him, I would like that. I don’t know, what it is, but ever since I first met him in Imladris, I had the feeling I know him for decades. He reminds me of someone... Don’t you feel the same, muindor?”
Haldir shook his head but his heart told him different.
// These eyes!// he thought.

Carinito: Thank you so much... I think you will have to wait for Sariks punishment a little longer, sorry. (e-mail)

Ertia: Thank you... I'm glad you like the story. As to Haldir, ah, we'll see what happens futher...

Anon: Hhm, I had some interesting suggestions about Sariks punishment, from castrate to killing... I'm not decided yet. We'll see... Thanks for reviewing :)

HHS: Are you pleased with me now??? Castration for Sarik, maybe. I think Elladan would be rigt now capable of doing so... I should make sure, he doesn't learn of this now - or there will be a new kinslaying and maybe I still need Sarik for the plot...

Greetings to all...
