Hobbitnapped
Chapter 14
As Ferny walked toward the path the blanket became unraveled at one end. The unmistakable form of a hobbits foot could be seen within. That was all that the hobbits needed. They were off and running before Silinde could react.
“Frodo....You Monster.....Let him go!!” they cried simultaneously.
Ferny turned toward the shouts and the first thing he saw was Sting coming at him. He quickly brought Frodo up to use as a shield. Sam, Merry and Pippin came to a standstill. As a deadly silence passed between them Ferny began to smile. ‘The fat one may be armed but he won’t do anything as long as I hold his friend’.
“Let him go!” Sam suddenly called out, startling Merry and Pippin.
Ferny just grinned wider. “Come for yer friend did ya? Well what if I says ya can’t have him?” Sam was becoming flustered. He knew he had to do something but he couldn’t risk injuring Frodo. He wouldn’t be able to do anything as long as Ferny held Frodo in front of him like that.
“Put the hobbit down!” It had come from the direction of the shack. Silinde had crept out of the woods and had an arrow notched and his bow raised. Ferny just stared at the tall creature. He had heard of Elves but he had never seen one before. “Put the hobbit down!” Silinde repeated.
While the Elf had Ferny distracted, Sam saw his opportunity and lunged at Ferny. He aimed low to avoid hitting Frodo. Sting caught Ferny just below the hip. Ferny screamed with rage and pain and dropped Frodo to the ground. Merry and Pippin were at his side instantly dragging their unconscious cousin away from the enraged man.
“Ya stupid RAT!!!!” Ferny screamed. “I’ll kill you for that!!!” He lunged toward Sam. Sam raised Sting to strike again when Ferny cried out in pain. Silinde had loosed his arrow and it struck Ferny in the shoulder. Sam swung Sting in a wide arc and sliced Ferny’s forearm from elbow to wrist. Ferny fell to his knees and stared at the vengeful hobbit in disbelief.
“No.” he said. He couldn’t believe he was losing the fight! Then he screamed “NO! Its not supposed to be like this!”
“Sam!” Merry called. “Frodo is in bad shape!”
Sam stared hard at Ferny. “What did you do to him?” he said through clenched teeth. Ferny just stared back defiantly.
Unknown to the group in front of the shack their shouts had attracted the attention of a group of riders on horseback. The King had been on his way to Hobbiton to check on his friends when they heard the shouts. The first to enter the small clearing appeared to be a soldier of some sort. Pippin immediately recognized the uniform of Gondor.
“It’s the Kings Guard!” Pippin said before he even realized he was talking.
“Here now!” The Captain of the Guard said. “Drop your weapons and tell me what this is all about.”
Ferny became panicky he wasn’t going to be taken to the dungeons! Just as King Elessar himself came into the clearing Ferny got up and ran at Sam. He thought to grab Sting and make his escape. As Ferny bore down on him, Sam brought Sting up. It caught Ferny square in the stomach.
“Samwise! NO!!” Cried Aragorn.
Ferny froze. His breaths coming in short pain filled gasps. Sam narrowed his eyes and a grin curved the corners of his mouth.
“This is for Frodo.” he said as he drove Sting in and upward and then yanked it out.
Ferny gave one last breathy gasp and collapsed to his knees. Sam continued to grin as he watched the life drain out of Ferny’s eyes. Without a word, Sam dropped Sting, walked over and picked up Frodo, and started walking toward the forest.
“Sam?” Marry said. Sam did not seem to hear him. Merry looked helplessly at Aragorn.
Aragorn took in the situation, “Take care of that....mess.” he said to his Guard motioning toward Ferny, and he took off after Sam.
Merry, Pippin and Silinde watched as Aragorn caught up to Sam. “Sam?” he said but Sam did not seem to hear him. “Samwise!” he called again. Sam stopped walking and turned around to face Aragorn. What Aragorn saw shocked him. Sam’s face was blanched white and he had a blank stare.
“Sam,” Aragorn said softly, “where are you going?” Sam blinked slowly and opened and closed his mouth a few times before he found his voice. “I’m taking him home, Mr. Strider sir. I’m taking Mr. Frodo home so’s he can be laid to rest in his garden.” Sam collapsed then. A large sob shaking his small body.
Aragorn rushed forward and took Frodo from him and gently guided Sam to the ground. Aragorn comforted his friend as best as he could. Merry and Pippin had caught up to them and took Sam into their embrace.
Aragorn turned his attention to Frodo. He carefully unwrapped the blanket. What he saw nauseated him. Frodo’s face was swollen and discolored. Blood had dried around his mouth and nose. Aragorn could see the cuts and bruises around Frodo’s neck. Anger boiled inside the former Ranger and he wished Ferny wasn’t dead. He wanted to kill the man himself! Tears were welling in Aragorn’s eyes when he caught a slight movement. Thinking it was simply a trick of his tears, Aragorn wiped his eyes and looked down at Frodo. There it was again! Ever so slightly Frodo’s chest was raising and falling. Aragorn could not believe it! He placed his fingers on the side of Frodo’s neck to feel for a pulse. It was weak, but it was there.
“He lives!!” Aragorn cried. Sam, Merry and Pippin jumped up. “Frodo lives!!” Aragorn said gathering Frodo up into the blanket. “Guard!! he called. “My horse, at once!!” Looking at Sam Aragorn said “I’ll take him to Rivendell where Lord Elrond can care for him.” Merry and Pippin stepped forward.
“We’re coming with you!” Merry said. Aragorn looked at the three hobbits and nodded. He mounted his horse with Frodo in front of him and rode off.
Silinde joined the group as Aragorn left. “I’m afraid I must be getting back else my brothers think I have been abducted.” Sam, Merry and Pippin thanked the Elf profusely for his help in saving Frodo. Sam invited Silinde to visit Bag End any time he was in the
Shire. Silinde accepted the invitation, bowed and disappeared into the forest.
Merry, Sam and Pippin were placed on horses in front of the Guard and all headed toward Rivendell.
“Elbereth, please let Mr. Frodo be all right! He survived Mordor, let him also survive this!” Sam prayed......
