A/N: I didn’t mean to abandon this fic, but the delay was due to the fact that I meant to alter the ending of this fic. When I couldn’t think of anything, I grew discouraged and started working on Runes. But, here it is now… with the ending I originally had in mind. I was once planning on a sequel, but don’t know if I’ll continue with it.

Chapter 14

During the following weeks of his pregnancy, Rúmil felt as if all of his wildest dreams had come true. He finally felt loved and was no longer ashamed. Rúmil even mustered up the courage to leave the talan every once I a while to go for a walk or to bath in the stream with his beloved.

Legolas remained with him, tending to his every wish and desire and enduring his mood swings and constant cravings with unwavering good humor. He stood firmly by Rúmil’s side as his lover and the father of his child, despite the strange looks they often received. The prince even invited his father, the King of Mirkwood, to visit once the baby was born.

“Legolas, I do not think ‘tis a good idea to invite your Adar,” Rúmil said when his lover told him the news. “I know that parents are usually glad to hear that they will have grandchildren, but our situation is far from normal. What if he forbids you to be with me? I’ve heard he is not the most pleasant of Elves.”

“What you heard is only a rumor spoken by those who dislike us. My Adar is very kind. And he will be happy to know that you that you are with child. When I told him that I prefer ellyn, his only concern was that I will never have a son.” Legolas took Rúmil in his arms and continued, “And even if he did not want us to be together, for whatever reason… I would not respect his wishes.” At those words, Rúmil laid his head back against Legolas’ shoulder. Nothing was going to interfere with their bliss.

Oftentimes, the Mirkwood prince provided an additional source of amusement for Rúmil. It seemed that pregnant Elves, in the nude, had the effect of an aphrodisiac on Legolas. Seeing Rúmil naked, with a rounded belly, never failed to arouse the poor Elf. The result was frequent, awkward love making sessions that were somewhat hindered by Rúmil’s condition but were only more loving and tender because of it.

Most importantly of all, Rúmil was finally beginning to love the child, which was a manifestation of his and Legolas’ love for one another.

**

Legolas woke to the sweet chirping of finches. He winced away from the bright sunlight coming in through the window. With a groan he reached back with his arm to find his lover, but the space beside him was empty. Abruptly, he sat up, only to find Rúmil sitting on the far right corner of the bed.

Rúmil’s face was marred with worry and he winced slightly as if he were in pain.

“Rúmil, what is wrong?” Legolas crawled over to his lover’s side, putting and arm around his shoulders.

“It hurts, ‘Las,” said Rumil. “I am bleeding….”

“Why did you not wake me?” Legolas tried not to raise his voice despite the ball of panic that was beginning to form in his gut.

“I….”

“Haldir!”

“They are at the border,” said Rúmil.

Legolas didn’t want to leave his beloved alone when something was obviously very wrong, but he did not think Rúmil was in the condition to walk and he would need to be seen by a healer at once.

“Lie down,” Legolas instructed. “I will bring a healer.”

When Legolas returned with the healer, he was told to close the door and wait outside while. However distraught, the prince knew it was for the best and did as the healer asked. His instincts told Legolas what was wrong: Rumil miscarried. The child, whom he had already imagined as he or she would be years from now, learning to use a now, would never come. He wept, for the first time since he scraped his knee as an Elfling.

The healer confirmed his worst fear. “How? Why?” he asked. “I thought Elves never miscarried.”

“It is very rare,” the healer admitted. “But just as the an Elf’s soul is allowed to escape to the Halls of Mandos when he or she no longer desires to live, so can the soul of an unborn child, if the parent does not find happiness in its life.”

Legolas pressed his hand against the wall for support.“Nay… but… he was happy…”

“Not before you came here, Legolas,” said the healer who had tended to Rumil since the beginning of his pregnancy. “His current happiness could not undo the damage that had already been done.”

When Legolas was finally allowed to see his beloved, he entered the room with hesitant steps. Rúmil did not move as the prince approached. And Legolas did not speak, for he could not find any words that would comfort his lover.

“We lost the baby,” Rúmil said, after a long silence.

Legolas nodded, “I know.”

More silence followed, and Rúmil began to weep. The tears that had collected in Legolas’ eyes began to fall as well.

“I’m sorry I failed you,” Rumil managed, between sobs.

Legolas lay down beside his lover and began to pat his arm soothingly.“’Tis not your fault. I should never have left.” Still, Rumil continued to cry.

“We will try again, hmm?” Legolas tried.

At last, Rumil turned around. “You are willing?”

“Aye. When you are ready, and if you want to…”

Rumil’s smile brightened his sickly features. “Aye, we will try again.”

The End.
