Hobbitnapped

Chapter 12

Ferny was in a rage. This little cretin had tried to get away from him. That could not be allowed. Ferny knew what would happen. The rat would run right to this friend, the King and tell him all that had happened. Then the King would have him strung up in the town square, or worse, locked up in the dungeons! Ferny was having no part of that! Frodo had just caught his breath and turned to look at Ferny. His eyes went wide with terror and he braced himself for what he knew was coming.

Ferny raised the strap. “Thought ya were gonna run away did ya!” He brought the strap down hard.

Frodo heard the swish of the strap and felt the burn as it cut into his back. He buried his face in the mattress and bit his lip in an effort to not cry out.

“Ya was gonna run to yer friends and tell on me wasn’t ya?” The strap came down again. Frodo bit down harder but did not cry out.

“Ya want to see me dead don’t ya rat?” Again the strap fell, Frodo bit through his lip and tasted blood.

“Someone help me!” He screamed.

Ferny’s rage boiled over then. He brought the strap down fast and hard. Over and over again. Frodo soon lost control and was screaming in agony each time the strap fell.

“Elbereth! Please help me!” his mind screamed. “Make him stop!! Make him STOP!!!”

Ferny was in a blind rage by this time. He did not care where the strap fell as long as it hit the hobbit on the bed. Frodo’s screams diminished. He was weakening.

“Elbereth, Please just let me die!” Frodo prayed. “I cannot take anymore of this!” Frodo closed his eyes and felt himself beginning to drift. He could still hear the swish and slap of the strap but he could no longer feel anything. His last conscious thought was “Thank Elbereth its all over.”

Ferny noticed that Frodo had gone still. Thinking he had killed the rat he stopped beating him. He looked at his victim, Frodo’s back was a bloody mess and Ferny had blood spatters all over his clothing. He dropped the strap and, breathing heavily and on shaky legs, he staggered out to the other room and collapsed on the sofa. He soon passed into a deep sleep.

When Ferny woke up the sun was high. He didn’t know it but he had slept through the night and most of the next day. He brought his hand up to wipe his face and saw it was covered with dried blood. At first he was confused. Where had the blood come from? Then he remembered the hobbit in the back room and what he had done.

“Shit!” he spat. “Surely that rat can’t still be alive! I’ll have to dispose of his body somewhere!” Ferny ran his blood stained hand through his hair.

‘The river!’ He thought to himself. “I’ll drop him in the river like I was going to do before!” With that thought Ferny went to the back room. What he saw thoroughly disgusted him. It was hard for him to believe that the bloody mess on the bed was once a living being.

Ferny went to the bed and undid the restraints. He then rolled Frodo over onto his back. Ferny couldn’t believe what he saw! The hobbits chest was rising and falling! He was still alive! Ferny became scared. Alive or dead he had to get it out of his shack. He grabbed the old blanket and wrapped Frodo up in it. He then went and cleaned himself up. His shirt was hopelessly stained with Frodo’s blood. He knew that he would get more on him when he carried Frodo to the river so he didn’t even bother to change. He just put his old coat over the top of it. He went back to the room, picked up the bundle in the blanket and walked out the door heading for the Brandywine.
