To Love in Vain?

“Of all the pain, the greatest pain, it is to love, but love in vain.” – Abraham Cowley

After the snow fight several days earlier, Legolas was wary to let Annowe out of his sight for very long, lest she take it upon herself to “teach him a lesson” again as she put it. Not that he would have minded. He enjoyed their wrestling matches. It helped to alleviate some of the tension between them and it was another non-threatening way he could be close to her.
Annowe was relieved that they had returned to safe ground again. She was hopeful that Legolas would continue to overlook her inadvertent kiss and they could continue to play together without threatening their friendship. But she would carry that sensation of his soft lips against hers in her heart forever.
Late at night while she stood watch, she would replay the scene again and again in her mind, feeling her lips touch his, his lips part slightnd tnd then his quick intake of breath. Each time her body shivered with longing for him.
Then she would remember the feel of his lean body beneath hers as they wrestled in the snow and she squeezed her thighs against him. Neither could she forget the feel of his bare muscular chest under her eager hand.
And she would watch him as he lay there, peacefully, his delicate features relaxed in sleep. More than anything she wanted to curl up next to him, to feel his strength and his heat but she knew he would be instantly awake if she did.
Legolas began to notice her increasing silence and he grew uneasy. She was not one to mince words and he knew her well enough to know that if she were upset, she would say something to him. He wondered if she were thinking of Haldir or if she had indeed begun to sense his ever-increasing desire for her or worse! She had actually seen him pleasuring himself and it had frightened and concerned her.
Certainly she had to know of his desire for her. He constantly walked around in a state of semi arousal and had to adjust himself several times a day! She had to notice. Perhaps that was the reason she had grown increasingly silent – she knew that her presence aroused him and was trying to spare him outright rejection. So why did she continue to brush his hair, playfully bump into him and massage his shoulders at night?
He shook his head to clear it. He would go mad if he continued to try and figure out what she was thinking. He should come right out and ask her. He grinned. Of course! She could not lie to him if he directly asked her a question and she wasn’t the type to be offended easily by brutally honest questions.
Soon they would be approaching the lower fork of the Loudwater River then Rivendell so he had to act quickly if he wished to wrest her from Haldir.
He found a suitable place and stopped for the night. She came up behind him.
“We’re stopping?” She asked.
“Yes, I think so,” he replied and tossed his blanket and pack on the ground.
“I’ll be glad to return to Rivendell,” she said quietly, wanting nothing more than a hot bath and some good food.
“And I,” he agreed.
Annowe spread her blanket on the ground and sat down to rummage through her pack for some Lembas and water. Legolas sat across from her in silence for a few moments before he ventured the question that had been on his mind.
“Is there anything bothering you?” He asked gently.
She looked surprised at the thought. Certainly this was not what she expected.
“No, not particularly. I’m just very tired and sick of Lembas,” she answered. It was mostly true.
He looked doubtful. “You’ve been awfully quiet lately,” he said casually, still unable to ask her about Haldir. He did not fear her temper – she would quickly forgive him – but he DID fear her answer. Did he truly want to know if Haldir had been sharing her bed?
“I’ve been thinking,” she admitted, daring him to continue his line of questioning.
He narrowed his gray eyes at her. She was not being totally honest with him, he was sure of that. She was probably thinking of the March Warden! Well, he would find out!
“About what?” He pressed.
“Do you truly want to know?” She asked in a tone that said “you’re asking for it”.
Legolas could sense he was on the verge of victory. “Yes, I want to know. Tell me.” He was determined to drag the truth out of her once and for all.
Annowe swore in frustration. He was quite set on dragging it out of her. Perhaps it is time, she thought. We’ll be in Rivendell soon and I can always just go home and avoid him if he becomes angry.
“I cannot stand being around you any longer,” she answered him flatly.
His eyes opened wide in surprise. Certainly this was not the answer he was expecting. “Why?” He asked innocently, now more confused than ever.
“Because you’re driving me mad with all of these stupid, pointless questions!” She fairly shouted at him as she sprang to her feet. Now she truly was angry and stalked off to get some peace and quiet.
He watched her go and mentally cursed himself. He should have known that backing her into a corner was a sure way to provoke her temper. He’d certainly done it enough in the past. He sighed heavily and unrolled his own blanket, lying down and staring up at the starry sky.
Now she was upset and he still did not know if she were having an affair with Haldir. He groaned inwardly but realized it was his own fault. Instead of asking her the question outright, he had tip toed around the issue. No wonder she was frustrated. She had answered the questions he had asked and nothing more. How was she supposed to know what he truly wanted if he didn’t ask her?
Annowe cursed in several tongues as she stalked off into the welcoming darkness. The elf seemed more determined than ever to drive her to madness. First he interrogated her then he seemed determined to physically tempt her beyond all reason. Now he had returned to interrogation! Just what in Mordor was he driving at? Whatever it was, she wished he would either spit it out or drop it before he drove her over the edge of reason.
“Rivendell can’t get here soon enough,” she sighed to the stars. She would sooner face MarcMarch Warden than deal with Legolas any longer. She just couldn’t understand what had gotten into him lately. One minute he was fine and would play with her like they always had and the next minute he was interrogating her about nothing she could make heads or tails of!
With a heavy sigh she realized what she must do. She would admit her feelings to him before they reached Rivendell. If he became upset she could leave him as soon as they had reported to Elrond. If he did not become upset, well, she hadn’t actually considered that.
