Interlude

Interlude: To Take a Stand

Liv sighed, snuggling deeper into her dark blue robe. She was the first again. At least now, with a pale moon gleaming in the blackened sky the tourists had gone. The only ones left to worry about were the guards and she was sure that they couldn't see her. For just a moment her face darkened. How could they dare to defile a place like this with fences and guards? How could they allow thousands of people to walk over the sacred grounds?
She shivered. Stonehenge had always been holy and even after those who had originally built it had already been long gone, the people settling near it had felt the call of the stones. They had known that the place held meanings and histories they'd rather not discovere and had treated the circles with proper respect. And now?

"Tell me, sister," Cate suddenly stepped forward, the shadows parting in front of her, "What brings this scorn to your face?"

"This nothing," Liv smiled sadly, sighing, "I thought about how humans treat this place."

"The human mind wil never comprehend," Miranda interrupted them, suddenly appearing und the portal of the sunstone, "What role this place could play in the end."

"Have all of us acknowledged the call?" Liv asked, gently tracing a finger over the long-cold altar.

"'Twas not clear to hear for all."

"But call he did," Live reprimanded Cate, "The time has come to choose."

"Do we know what power this sets loose?" Miranda cautioned, "We cannot keep from changing the balance of powers."

"But we have to," Liv insisted, "Or do you wish us to return to our towers?"

"Nay," Miranda shook her head, "But I do not wish to tip the scale towards destruction."

"Why this sudden need for precaution?" Liv finally turned away from the stone, facing the two others, "We all know what has to be done." And I will do it, no matter what, she added silently. Even if I have to go against my sisters. The thought pained her.

Silence descended upon the gargantuan stones, none of them dared to speak up again. They never acted without agreeing, all of them agreeing to what they were doing, yet this time no silent agreement could be reached.

"We have to act." Liv insisted.

"But the facts," Cate said pleadingly, "We know not which version of the myth is right..."

"Is that your sole reason to wait?"

"Do you need any other?"

Mists rose from the softly rolling hills, circling around the barren stones that wavered in the fog like giant human shapes, unmoving and forever silent. The damp night was deadly silent as the three witches stared at one another, fighting a silent battle. Liv shook her head, blue eyes misting over with tears. She knew that everything wouold end in a disaster if they did not act. What if the worlds came to an end over their argument? What if she really believed in the wrong part of the mystery?

"We cannot act if there is discord between us." Miranda said gravely, bowing her head.

A breeze rose, travelling over the peak and tearing at the mists. All three women slowly stepped backwards, one to the east, one to the west and one to the south, quickly merging with the dissolving foggy curtain around them. Only seconds later Stonehenge lay deserted.
