Confrontation

Haldir twisted his back in a lazy stretch, a satisfied groan plastered on his face. He looked at Rumil with an amused expression. The younger Elf’s hands were curled into fists at his sides and his nostrils flared.

“What?” Haldir asked.

“What have you done!?” Rumil erupted.

“My dear brother, you must be more innocent than Legolas if you are unsure of what I did…”

“I know what you did,” Rumil growled. “How could you have?”

“It’s simple,” Haldir said nonchalantly. “He is here for the celebration. He wanted me to teach him the ways of love. I was attracted to him, so I agreed.”

“Was!? Haldir, did you ever stop to think that he might consider it more than a meaningless tryst?”

Haldir shrugged. “I have said nothing to make him think otherwise.”

Rumil smacked his forehead with his palm, shaking his head. “Haldir, I had a duty to fulfill—to bring Prince Legolas before the king. I can hardly believe my own brother…”

“I assure you, Legolas has not been harmed,” said Haldir. “And if you were so concerned about his safety, perhaps you should have been looking for him instead of letting his Adar mount you.”

Rumil’s jaw dropped; Haldir smiled. “Aye, I saw you. Legolas did as well. ‘Tis a shame… he appeared to like you, but I don’t think he will want you after what he saw.”

Rumil was saddened by the news, but he fought not to let Haldir see it. “I will not forget this,” he said through clenched teeth.

Haldir cocked his head to the side, grinning again. “Are you angry with me because you think I got in the way of you doing your duty? Or because you were afraid to touch him, while I was not?”

Rumil fought the urge to pounce on his brother, his infuriation not only the result of what Haldir had said, but of knowing it to be true. Sending Haldir one last, displeased glare, he spun on his heal and left the talan.

Facing Legolas was difficult, now that Rumil knew the prince had seen him with Thranduil. He was not sure why it bothered him so. Everyone had sex with everyone else at the Celebration. So why should he feel guilty for giving in to the king’s advances. And Legolas had told him that he would seek him out sometime before the festival ended. Why should he think that would change?

What made the situation even tenser for Rumil, was the change he sensed in Legolas. The prince said nothing, but he did not appear angry. He walked with his lips curled in a mischievous smile and Rumil could sense that something wicked was taking place in Legolas’ mind. He dreaded standing before Thranduil with the prince at his side. Would Legolas say something to embarrass him? As they began to ascend the spiral stairway to the royal talan, Rumil tried in vain to compose himself.

They found Thranduil, Celeborn, and Galadriel already waiting for them. Rumil was pleased to see that the King had managed to don a light robe. He bowed low, before introducing Legolas to his Lord and Lady. After they thanked him for his service, Rumil turned to leave, but not before casting an uneasy look at Legolas, who was smiling in amusement, eyes darting from him to Thranduil and back. He began to wonder how everything had gone so wrong, and hoped that he would see neither of the Mirkwood royals again—but his heart said otherwise.
