Hobbitnapped
Chapter 11
After leaving Frodo soaking wet, Ferny decided it was time for a drink himself. He left the shack and headed toward Bree. He was curious to know if news of the disappearance had reached there yet. He passed a group of hobbits that eyed him curiously. This made Ferny nervous but he soon dismissed the feeling as simply needing a drink. He continued toward Bree.
When he reached the Prancing Pony he went right up to the bar and ordered a pint. “You going to pay for it this time?” Asked Butterbur, eyeing Ferny suspiciously. “Ahhh!!” Ferny spat as he dug into his pockets and threw a few coins on the bar. As soon as the pint was in front of him, Ferny drained it. He slammed it down on the bar and demanded another. Butterbur obliged him and he started to drink that one down as well. “Hey, easy there fella, make it last.” said a man sitting next to him. Ferny slammed the pint down on the bar and threw a menacing look at the man. “What business is it of yers?” He spat. Then he thought better of it. “Aw heck, I didn’t mean nothing by that. Just nerves I guess” He said by way of apology. He continued to drink his pint slower.
“I been outta town for a while. Any news?” he asked. The man looked at him, leaned in close and said. “One of them Shire hobbits got hisself kidnapped day afore yesterday.” Ferny raised his eyebrows in mock surprise. The man continued. “Whole town been in a stir since news reached here. Search parties have been going out since early morning.”
“Really?” questioned Ferny thinking about the group of hobbits he passed on the way in. “What’s a Shire hobbit got to do with Bree?” The man leaned in closer, “Well word has it that it was one of them four hobbits that was involved in the wars and they are saying it was a man what took him.” he replied. Ferny chuckled. “Eh! He was probably just looking for a good time.” he said. “I heard them hobbits were a good lay.” Ferny and the man laughed. “Yeah” he said “But I pity him when he gets caught! Words been sent to Gondor. Seems that the King is friends with that hobbit. Fought side by side with him rumor has it.”
“Oh?” said Ferny getting nervous again. “Yeah, no telling what that man will suffer in the Kings dungeons!” the man chuckled. Ferny chuckled nervously and ran his hand through his hair. “Who says he’s gonna get caught anyway?” Ferny said a little too harshly. He finished off his pint and left abruptly. The man at the bar just looked at Fernys retreating back, shrugged his shoulders and went back to his pint.
Ferny was in a panic now. ‘Friend of the King’ he thought to himself. ‘Of all the dumb things you’ve ever done this has got to be the dumbest!’ He quickly walked out of town looking behind him every now and again to make sure no one was following him. What was he going to do now? He felt as if things were getting outta hand. One thing was for sure, he couldn’t keep the rat in his shack any longer. “I’ll have to get rid of him somehow.” Ferny said out loud. “I’ll throw him in the Brandywine! By the time they find his body there won’t be enough left of him to know what happened!” Ferny hurried toward home unaware of the pair of farseeing eyes that were watching him. The owner of those eyes heard Ferny talking to himself and guessed who that man was talking about. The elf noted where the man was heading and took off at a run toward Bag End.
As soon as Ferny reached the shack he went straight into the back room. Frodo eyed him warily wondering what Ferny had in store for him now. Ferny just stood there smiling at him. Frodo shifted a little bit unable to take his eyes off him. Ferny laughed then, startling Frodo. “Seems I have a celebrity here!” Frodo was confused. “What are you talking about” he asked. Ferny lunged toward the bed with his hand raised. Frodo cringed waiting for the blow to fall. “Keep yer mouth shut!” Ferny yelled. He thought better of striking Frodo and dropped his hand. “I got better plans for you.” he said. He reached over and started to undo the restraints at Frodo’s ankles. “Yeah a friend of the King deserves special treatment.” Frodo began to slowly shake his head. “Wha...what are you going to do?” Frodo stammered. Ferny glared at him and Frodo immediately went still. Ferny then started to undo the restraints around Frodo’s wrists. “Ya ain’t gonna try to run on me now are ya?” Ferny asked as he undid the last one. Frodo shook his head no as thoughts of escape ran through his mind. Ferny pulled Frodo off the bed and stood him up on the floor.
The dizziness of that quick movement along with the pain in his hands and feet caused Frodo to black out. When he came to, he was a crumpled heap on the floor. He looked up to see Ferny smiling down at him with his hands on his hips. Ferny chuckled. “Knew it! Ya couldn’t run if ya wanted to!” He picked Frodo up and set him on his feet again. This time Frodo managed to stay standing, albeit on shaky legs. Frodo saw his chance. Pain or no pain he was getting out of here! He shoved Ferny onto the bed and ran for the door. Ferny gave a surprised yell. “Come back here ya stupid rat!” he yelled after him.
Frodo could hear Ferny running after him. He had just made it outside when Ferny grabbed him by the hair and yanked him backwards. Frodo cried out in pain and despair. “LET ME GO!!” He screamed, kicking and swinging his fists trying desperately to get away from Ferny. “HELP!!” he yelled hoping someone would hear him. Ferny grabbed Frodo by the neck and lifted him up of the ground cutting off his air supply, Frodo fought desperately but Ferny was too strong. “Ya best stop squirming Rat or I’ll break yer scrawny neck!” Frodo’s head was swimming from lack of air. He hadn’t even noticed that they were back inside the shack until Ferny threw him down on the bed. As Frodo coughed and gasped for air Ferny reattached the restraints around his wrists and ankles. Frodo was face down on the bed now. “Shoulda known I couldn’t trust ya!” Ferny spat as he went and grabbed a leather strap from the corner of the room. “King or no King yer gonna get what’s coming to ya!” And Ferny approached the bed.
