Chapter 11

"Why will I not fade?" Rumil asked himself out loud before taking another gulp
of mead, emptying

the glass. "'Tis what happens to Elves who cannot bear their grief..."

The Galdhrim was overwhelmed by feelings that built up inside him day by day:
anger, self-loathing,

loneliness, fear of what would come, and hate for the THING that was growing
inside him. All his life

he had kept his secret safe, but now it would be revealed to all.

"Well, if I will not fade, then I will drink until I no longer feel the
pain."Rumil picked up a bottle with a

shaky hand, ready to pour its remaining contents in his glass but it was
snatched from him.

Haldir set the bottle of mead on the table with a loud thud. "What do you think
you are doing,

gwanur? 'Tis not good for the baby."

"I do not care about the baby!" Rumil cried as he reached for the bottle again,
but he was too drunk

and resignated to fight his brother. An onslaught of tears came quickly and
Haldir put his arms

around Rumil, holding him tightly as he cursed himself for going off to the
border and leaving the

distraught Elf alone. He really should have known better.

"I am sorry I left you alone," Haldir said to the sobbing form in his arms. "Do
not cry, we will get

through this..."

"Any response from Legolas? Haldir asked when the younger Elf had finally calmed
down, thinking

that maybe the Prince's reaction was the reason for Rumil's despair.

There was a period of silence before Rumil answered quietly, "He does not know."

Haldir pulled away slighty to look his brother in the eyes. "You have not sent
word to him? You

cannot be serious... he needs to know, 'tis his child as well."

"Why should I tell him?" Rumil lashed out. "So that I will have to suffer the
humiliation of being

rejected? It is not as though I already have enough to endure..."

"Rumil, he loves you, and I think he would be supportive. You must let him
know."

"Well I will not."

Haldir sighed but said nothing more. He would have to take matters into his own
hands.

'What if he thinks this is stupid?' Orophin worried as he placed the last of a
number of pillows atop

the arrangement of soft blankets layered over a thick bear skin. The room was
illumitated by

candles and a warm fragrance of rose and spices scented the air, coming from a
previously

neglected oil burner that he had finally put to good use. A bowl of grapes, a
bottle of white

wine, and two goblets stood on a platter nearby. The young Guardian bit a
fingernail nervously as

he assessed his work, wondering what the night would bring.

When Orophin decided everything was ready he made his way towards Haldir's room.

His heart sunk to the floor when he saw his brother brushing the the length of
his newly braided hair.

Was he leaving?

"Is Rumil sleeping now?" he asked.

"Aye," Haldir anwered in a somewhat sad tone. It was clear that he was worried
about his brother.

Orophin's eyes dropped to the ground. Perhaps it was somewhat selfish to try to
attend to his own

personal needs with Rumil in his current state. But there was not much he could
do for him since his

foolishness had never allowed them to become close. The best he could do now is
try to become a

better Elf and regain Rumil's trust.

"Where are you going?" he asked finally.

"Just to see some old friends."

"Please stay..." Orophin said more abrubptly than he would have liked.

"Stay? But I thought you were having one of your lovers coming over," said
Haldir, assuming an

ignorant tone. "I have never seen you try so hard to impress someone..." he
added with a barely

noticeable smile.

"Do not play around with me Haldir. You know very well that I long for no one
but you since you did

whatever it was you did to me that night..." Orophin followed Haldir back out of
the bedroom.

The older of the brothers took a look around at Orophin's handiwork. "Aye, but I
do not think you

have learned your lesson yet. 'Tis still all about sex to you..."

Orophin shook his head. "Nay, 'tis not. Just stay with me, Haldir... we do not
have to..." he stopped

talking mid-sentence and blushed when Haldir pulled out a vial of oil that was
neatly tucked in

between the pillows. "Just in case...."

Haldir laughed softly. "Come here," he said, extending a hand out to Orophin and
pulling the

younger Elf to him. When Orophin lay comfortable against the pillows Haldir
reached into the

bowl of fruit and pulled out a single grape, bringing it to his lips.

"Valar save me..." Haldir said huskily as he watched Orophin sink his teeth into
the fruit, making

it burst with sweet juice.

"'Tis nice to see you again, mellon. I am glad you have come."

"I left as soon as I recieved your letter Haldir's letter. How fares Rumil? He
has not answered any of

my letters." The Prince of Mirkwood had made the journey to the Golden Wood
alone and in great

haste. He wore a black cape, the hood of which covered his golden hair. Worried,
sapphire eyes

shimmered in the moonlight as they searched Orophin's ffor for answers. Legolas'
horse snorted

and shifted its weight.

"He is not well. Mayhap your presence will change that. Come, I explain things
in more detail on the

way."
