Chapter Eleven
Disclaimer: Nope, we don’t own them. Wish we did. This never happened (well, to the best of our knowledge), it’s just a figment of our twisted little imaginations. And we do hope that you enjoy it. :-D
“What do you MEAN Viggo’s coming?!” Billy asked when the trio had regrouped in Elijah’s room. “I mean, it’s twelve hours from LA to here, and that’s just the flight. Are we just supposed to sit here?”
Orlando groaned, rubbing his temples as he paced in front of the bed. “I don’t like it anymore than you, Billy, but unless you have another option, then yes, we sit here, waiting for Viggo.”
He really didn’t like it. He was antsy. Elijah could be dying and what was he doing? Sitting in a hotel room, waiting for Viggo.
“Fuck!” he suddenly cried, picking up the TV remote and hurling it across the room. Oh yes, he felt soooooooooo much better. Throwing things was very therapeutic.
Actually, he just felt like curling into a ball and crying. . .
Billy and Dom looked at each other, confirming that the other person also thought that Orlando was acting a LOT more violent lately. Dom headed over and opened up Elijah’s computer.
Orlando sighed, sinking down onto the bed and drawing his legs up to his chest, resting his chin on his knee. He was worried about Elijah, and having to wait around for Viggo was not helping his mood. He needed something to distract him, even if only for a few minutes.
He glanced at Dom curiously, raising his head. “What are you doing?”
“Trying to see if Lij made any notes on his computer,” Dom said, checking out the recent documents feature. “Oh, here’s something.”
Billy peeked over his shoulder as the document opened.
“Sweeet, vampire cliff notes,” Dom announced as he read the page. “Whoa, you can read his mind now? Cool.”
Orlando cleared his throat, awkwardly rubbing the back of his neck as he slid his legs off the bed and stood up. “Yeah, I can read Elijah’s mind,” he said shyly, feeling his face growing warm.
He moved over to stand behind Dom. “What else does it say?”
Billy glanced over at him.
“Why did that make you blush?” he asked.
“You can apparently make him do stuff too,” Dom interjected. “‘Vampires have great persuasive abilities that can border on mind control on their victims.’ Fuck, I wanna be a vampire. I’d totally mind control me some chicks!”
Billy shot him a look. Dom looked sheepish, cleared his throat, and concentrated on the computer.
Orlando frowned, rolling his eyes. “Trust me, Dom, you do NOT want to be a vampire,” he muttered.
“And I know all about the mind control,” he said, wrinkling his nose. “Vanessa used it on me. There was no way I could tell her no.”
He frowned slightly. He hadn’t unconsciously used mind control on Elijah during their dream, had he?
He blushed again and cast a sideward glance at Billy. He hoped the other man didn’t realize he hadn’t answered his question. . .
Dom chuckled.
“Lij’s totally getting laid right now,” he said with a grin.
“Dom! Shut up!” Billy said, looking a bit revolted.
“What? It’s true!” Dom insisted. “There’s all this stuff about vampires and sex here.”
“What?” Orlando said, frowning. “What does it say?”
Oh god, he didn’t want to even THINK about that undead freak touching his Elijah.
Yes, his Elijah. What? Did anybody have a problem with that?!
“Oh, just stuff about vampires using sex to hide the fact that they’re drinking your blood,” Dom said. “Hey, that sounds easier than the stuff I used to have to do to get dates.”
“Dom, Orli’s worried about Lij. He’s not in the mood,” Billy said. And did Dom HAVE to talk about that sort of stuff?! It made him feel weird.
Orlando licked his lips, nodding. “Yeah, that’s what Vanessa did the first time. And. . .sort of like what I did to Lij. . .”
Except he and Elijah had just made out in the limo. . .
He smiled at Billy gratefully. No, he didn’t want to talk about this. He just wanted Elijah back, safe and sound, so they could pick up where they’d left off.
Of course, he’d settle for just holding Elijah in his arms, as long as he got the chance to do so again.
“Alright, then I guess we should get back to finding out where Elijah is,” Dom said, trying to figure out what Billy’s problem was.
“Thorndon House,” Orlando said. “In the basement.”
He glanced at Dom, raising an eyebrow. Jeez, was Dom just as clueless as he’d been?
“How do you know that?” Billy asked, surprised.
Orlando blushed. “Um, we kind of had an Aragorn-Arwen dream sequence and then Vanessa intruded on it and told me where he was and come find him. Basically issuing a challenge.”
He averted his eyes, looking anywhere but at Billy and Dom. He was SO not telling them about the rest of the dream.
“Really?” Billy asked, suddenly fascinated.
“Lemme guess, Lij was Arwen?” Dom said with a smirk.
Billy glared at him. He was such a jerk when he was trying to act hetero.
Orlando rolled his eyes. “Actually he was Buttercup,” he said.
And then he REALLY blushed and began fidgeting nervously.
“I really don’t need to know youfetyfety words, Orli,” Dom deadpanned.
Billy looked pained as he tried unsuccessfully to avoid smirking. But that was pretty funny.
Orlando smacked Dom on the back of his head. “Not funny,” he grumbled.
“Look, it’s gonna be a while before Viggo gets here and we stayed up late researching,” he said. “Why don’t we get some rest and you guys get some food? You’re probably hungry.”
Shit. . .speaking of food. . .what was he g to to do since Elijah was kidnapped? He doubted Dom or Billy would be willing donors.
“I’m going to take this and get it printed out somewhere,” Dom said, closing up the laptop.
“Maybe I should go check out that place you mentioned,” Billy suggested. “I mean, Viggo’s not going to be here until midnight, and if we just show up then, it’ll be weird.”
Orlando chewed his lower lip. Billy had a point. . .but if Vanessa saw him. . .
He slowly nodded. They had to take the chance. Reconnaissance would be good.
“Just be careful,” he said. “And arm yourself.”
He motioned toward the bathroom. “Lij has a whole arsenal of anti-vampire stuff in there.”
“Oh right. Good idea,” Billy said, then headed into the bathroom.
“Whoa!” he exclaimed. “Garlic! It reeks in here!”
Orlando looked decidedly uncomfortable as the smell of garlic wafted into the room. “Yeah,” he said, nodding. “Vampires don’act act well to it.”
“There should be stakes and crucifixes in there too,” he said. “I think Lij threw all the holy water on Vanessa though. . .”
“How’d he get holy water?” Billy asked.
“Played altar boy with a priest,” Dom suggested.
Billy snorted in spite of himself. Sigh. Dom was so cute when he was an exacerbating little shit.
Orlando’s eyes widened for a moment and then he realized that Dom was just joking. Jeez, one would think he’arnearned his lesson about jealousy with the whole episode with Liv and Royston. . .
“He went to church, yeah,” he muttered. “I don’t know. I didn’t ask. I was too busy being uncomfortable.”
He was a vampire, remember? Or slowly becoming one anyway. . .
“Just try to avoid Vanessa as much as possible,” he said. “Don’t let her see you.”
“I’ll disguise myself as a Catholic schoolgirl,” Billy said with a grin.
Dom cracked up.
“Named Buttercup!” he added gleefully.
Orlando laughed in spite of himself. “God, now that’s a scary image,” he said.
Hmph. . .Elijah would be a cuter Catholic schoolgirl than Billy. . .
He blinked. Had he just thought that?!
“God, I’d look like one of the members of Monty Python,” Billy said, shaking his head. “Don’t worry, Orli. I’ll be careful.”
He held up one of the crucifixes, then remembered who he was dealing with and lowered it sheepishly.
“Sorry,” he muttered.
Orlando smiled slightly, trying not to show his discomfort. “It’s okay.”
“Here,” he said, picking Elijah’s cell phone up off the desk and handing it to Billy. “Just in case you get in trouble and need help.”
“Right. Okay. I’m off,” Billy said, then quickly left the room.
Orlando sighed, raking his fingers through his hair. “Maybe Billy’s right,” he said, glancing at Dom. “Maybe we are wrong to wait for Viggo. I mean, Elijah could be in trouble. . .and by the time we get there after Viggo arrives, we might be too late. . .”
In fact, things had been kind of quiet in his head. . .could Elijah just send him thoughts when he was sleeping?
“You’re asking the wrong guy, Orli,” Dom said, then held up Elijah’s computer. “I’m gonna take this down to the front desk. Get that file printed. I’ll be back soon.”
Orlando nodded. “Yeah, okay,” he said softly.
He licked his lips, sitting down on the edge of the bed. He closed his eyes--for some reason he found it easier to concentrate on Elijah that way--and reached out with his thoughts.
Please, Elijah, just let me know you’re all right.
“Oookay,” Dom said, then left the room. Things were just WAY too weird.
Orlando was left facing nothing but silence.
******
Dom returned in about half an hour. When midnight had come and gone, and Billy still hadn’t returned, he started to get worried. He practically jumped out of his skin when a knock came at the door, and flung himself across the room to open it. When he saw Billy he threw his arms around him.
“Thank God,” he breathed.
“Hey Dom,” Billy said, fidgeting a little. “Um, Viggo’s. . .”
The older man shoved past him into the room, heading immediately for the bathroom.
“You said they were in here, right?” he growled insistently.
“Here,” Billy finished weakly, then shrugged at Dom.
“Yeah, everything’s in there,” Orlando said miserably. He was completely worried about Elijah. He’d kept trying to reach him with his thoughts but to no avail. The silence was starting to eat at him. What if Elijah was already dead?
He’d been so miserable, he’d completely forgotten about feeding. It was the furthest thing from his mind.
“Dom found some vampire info on Elijah’s computer,” he said. “He got it printed out. Might be of some help.”
“Anything happens to that kid, it’s on you,” Viggo said gruffly, emerging from the bathroom with a backpack slung over his shoulder. “I TOLD you not to fuck with his head.”
“Sometimes you can’t help it,” Billy mumbled, very aware that Dom was still hanging off of him.
Orlando flinched. “I’m sorry,” he said. “I never thought something like this would happen.”
He decided that Viggo didn’t need to know what had happened between Elijah and him. . .the older man would probably only get angrier.
“Wow, for once, we’re not the screw ups,” Dom muttered to Billy. Billy frowned, not really thinking Viggo was being very fair.
“It could have been any of us,” he insisted.
“Just move,” Viggo said, grabbing the printout Dom had procured, grabbing Orlando, and heading out the door.
******
In the darkness inside Thorndon house, large eyes reflected the streetlamps a few feet away. To an onlooker, it might seem as if a large cat was watching from the window.
“He’s coming, isn’t he, Mistress?” Elijah asked. His voice would have sounded strange to him, were he as he once was.
Vanessa moved slowly in behind him and stroked his hair.
“Yes, my little one. He comes.”
******
“It’s just up ahead,” Billy said, rushing to keep up with Viggo and Orlando’s longer strides. “There’s apparently rooms in the basement, from when the mother of the people who own it used to live there.”
“Shhh!” Viggo hissed, his jittery manner making it clear he hadn’t slept in far too long. “Keep your voice down. They probably know we’re coming.”
Orlando licked his lips nervously, his fear having returned. He was so afraid of what condition they were going to find Elijah in. What if Vanessa hadn’t killed him? What if she’d turned him?
He didn’t think he’d be able to forgive himself for letting Elijah come. He should’ve come by himself. He would’ve found a way to destroy Vanessa. . .somehow.
“So what’s the plan?” he whispered to Viggo.
“You go in alone,” Viggo whispered, stopping a few houses away and moving off the street. “Find out where Elijah is, and what kind of shape he’s in. If you can get this vampire away from the main floor, we’ll sneak in and wait until morning, then stake her while she’s sleeping.”
Dom leaned on Billy, thankful they’d stopped walking so he could catch his breath.
Orlando nodded. It sounded easy enough.
“Okay,” he said, licking his lips. “Viggo. . .in a way, I’m sorry this happened. But in another way, I’m not. I know you probably won’t believe me, but my feelings for Elijah have changed. I swear on pain of death that’s the God’s honest truth.”
“Death doesn’t mean much to you right now,” Viggo said sternly. “Actions speak louder than words. Get him out of there.”
Orlando nodded quickly. “Wish me luck,” he said, smiling weakly.
Licking his lips again and taking a deep breath, he made his way toward the house, looking for a way in.
The front door of the historic building opened. Billy gasped as Elijah leapt out at Orlando, throwing his arms around him.
“Something’s wrong,” Viggo murmured.
“Yeah, he was having trouble standing last time we saw him,” Dom agreed.
“You came!” Elijah exclaimed. His voice sounded eerily hollow. “Come inside! The mistress is waiting!”
Orlando frowned. “Elijah?” he said, blinking. “Wha. . .what’s wrong with your voice?”
And why was he calling Vanessa ‘mistress’?! What the fuck had she done to his Lij?!
“Nothing!” Elijah insisted. “Everything’s become right! Don’t you see?! No one can stop us from being together now!”
He smiled, his eyes shining, but the innocence that previously accompanied such a gesture was gone, replaced by a pair of sharp fangs.
“No,” Orlando whispered, his eyes welling up with tears. “Oh Elijah, I promised you we were going to be together. . . You didn’t need to do this. . .”
Shit! He never should have let Elijah come with him! He should’ve made him stay in LA!
He swallowed, licking his lips. Right, he had a mission.
“Where’s Vanessa?” he asked.
“The mistress is inside. Waiting,” Elijah said, tugging Orlando toward the door. “Come in! She’ll be so happy to see you!”
His expression became confused when he saw the look on Orlando’s face.
“What’s wrong, my love?” he asked, blinking at him curiously.
Orlando smiled. Okay, time to be the actor that he was.
“Nothing, love,” he said, following along behind Elijah. “Everything’s finally right, as it should be.”
He nodded toward the door. “We mustn’t keep the mistress waiting.”
“She’s explained everything to me,” Elijah said as he pulled him inside. “I understand now, Orli. It’s going to be wonderful. Just the three of us. Forever. We’ll never get old. We’ll never die. It’ll be perfect.”
He closed the door, then wrapped his arms around Orlando’s waist, nestling his head against his chest.
Orlando found himself wrapping his arms around Elijah, holding him tight. It did sound perfect, didn’t it? It would be so easy to just give in. . .
But what had Vanessa done to Elijah that had taken away all his fight? This. . .person in his arms wasn’t the same person who’d gathered up stakes and holy water and garlic in an effort to save a man he loved. This person wasn’t the same person who’d let him feed off him out of love and devotion. This person. . .was a hollow shell of the man Orlando had fallen for.
“Yes, Elijah,” he said softly. “You’re right. It will be wonderful.”
Fuck, he needed to get Elijah out of here.
“Didn’t he turn wonderfully?” Vanessa asked as she moved out of the deep shadow in which she’d concealed herself. “The innocent ones always do. A little corruption is all it takes. They break like a wishbone.”
Elijah didn’t seem to care that he was being talked about. He was too busy trying to get his hands inside Orlando’s shirt.
“Why?” Orlando whispered, barely able to contain a shiver as Elijah’s hands finally found their way into his shirt and came in contact with his skin. “Why him?”
“Because you made it easy, and he tastes so sweet,” Vanessa said, then put her hand on Elijah’s shoulder. Elijah’s arms went limp, and he stared straight ahead, as if in a trance.
“You see,” Vanessa said. “We were interrupted, you and I. I wasn’t able to turn you properly, so your transformation is slow. But with him. . .”
She ran her fingers through Elijah’s hair. Elijah didn’t respond.
“By morning, his transformation will be complete,” she said. “And this whole little silly game with you and your friends will be over.”
“No,” Orlando said, shaking his head, stunned. Oh fuck no, this couldn’t be happening.
He’d made it easy? What did she. . .
“Oh god. . .our dream,” he whispered, what little color remaining in his face draining away. “You bitch. You fucking bitch.”
Oh god, where was Viggo?! Shit! He had to somehow let him know that they couldn’t wait until morning! It would be too late to save Elijah then!
Viggo, Billy and Dom were creeping around the side of the house, the two younger men too frightened of anything beginning with the letter ‘V’ to act up.
“You know what to do,” Viggo whispered, nodding at them.
Billy swallowed hard.
“Do we have to do this?” he whispered. “They’re gonna kill us.”
“Yes, you have to do this,” Viggo insisted. “You’re the diversion.”
“You mean bait,” Dom countered.
“Do you want to stand out here and argue about it, or do you want to get this over with?” Viggo asked pointedly.
“Stand here and argue,” Billy said with a nod.
“Why did you lie to Orli, anyway?” Dom asked.
“Because if she can read his mind, she’d know our plans,” Viggo said.
Dom and Billy looked at each other. Okay, Viggo was way smarter than both of them put together.
“Now do it,” Viggo hissed, then looked up as he heard female laughter inside the house. He slipped around the front of the house.
Dom shrugged.
“So diverge,” he said.
“How?” Billy asked.
“I don’t know. Sing a song or do a dance or something,” Dom said.
Billy blinked.
“Hobbit power?” he asked.
“Hobbit power,” Dom agreed.
