“Have you decided yet, Celeborn?”
Celeborn turned around to face Thranduil as he moved towards him. He stopped in front of him and looked at him expectantly.
“Decided what?”
“A punishment? Remember? Rumil… my son… a tree. What are you going to do about it?”
“No, I have not yet decided on a fitting punishment.”
Thranduil rolled his eyes and sighed. “It has been almost three weeks and you have not yet made up your mind. Must I do it for you?”
“No, really. I have some ideas but… nothing like this has ever happened before. I am unsure of what is suitable.”
“May I make a suggestion, then?”
“Of course.”
“Since Legolas is the victim here, as well as being a prince, and you cannot think up a proper punishment, why do you not ask his thoughts?”
Celeborn snorted. “One would think he would be too harsh. He is the victim, and after forgiving Rumil’s crime and attempting to court him for some reason, he was struck down in his offer. He would just seek revenge.”
“And is punishment not, in some way, revenge?”
Celeborn sighed. “You do have a point. But I do not think it is a good idea.”
“Give me one good reason that I cannot argue and I will let the matter drop and trust you to see this through.”
“I… why are you in such a hurry to rush this?”
“Normally, when one commits a crime they are not allowed to carry on their lives for several weeks while someone is thinking of what to do to them. You have permitted this. And either way, I would like to be here when the punishment is carried out.”
“He is not carrying on his life; I have taken him away from his duties and…”
“So you gave me a break? He gets a vacation from patrolling the borders as a reward for torturing my son?”
“No, that is not it at all. I am just trying to…”
“Make him see your trust in him is broken, yes, yes. But unfortunately, that is not good enough for the matter at hand.”
Celeborn let out a defeated sigh. “Alright then. We shall ask Legolas for his opinion.”
*************************
“Leaving the choice up to me, I would tie him to a tree naked for a full day as everyone in Lothlorien passed him.”
“Legolas.” Thranduil sighed. “We are being serious. A real punishment must be carried out. And it is preferred that a more… err… traditional punishment be used. Not humiliation tactics.”
“And what have you done to him in the past? Mucking stables? That is not humiliating for a warrior?”
“It is not the same thing, my prince,” Celeborn stepped forward. “What you are asking is far too… personal.”
“And what he did to me was far too personal!”
“Legolas. We really need your assistance with this. You know the more traditional punishments, and you know why what you ask is not doable. I suggest you stop playing around and aid us in seeking justice for crimes that were committed against you.”
Legolas smiled and headed for a small table on the opposite side of the room. Sitting down, he spent a silent moment picking at the wood. Looking up, he beckoned for Celeborn to sit across from him.
Once seated, Legolas leaned towards him. “Alright. Is whipping something you do here?”
Celeborn’s eyes widened. “Well, yes, but not in a long time. Certainly not in Rumil’s lifetime.”
“Well,” Legolas smiled smugly. “I think it’s time to oil down the cat o’ nine tails.”
Thranduil sat down on the bed beside the table. “You do not think it is too harsh?”
“You think it is? Ada, if Haldir had not shown up when he did, there is no telling what Rumil would have done to me.”
“But you cannot punish someone for what they thought to do, only for what they actually did.”
“Yes, and what he did was strip me naked and tie me to a tree, and then he proceeded to molest me. Is that not bad enough?”
Thranduil looked to Celeborn, making note of his worried expression. He was unsure of this punishment, but could think of nothing else fitting. Certainly mucking the stalls was not enough.
“And…” Legolas continued, sitting back in his chair and crossing his long legs. “I think I should be the one to carry it out.”
“Now wait a moment…” Celeborn began to protest, but froze as Thranduil gestured for him to be silent.
Standing, Thranduil walked to stand before his son, situating himself so close that their legs touched. He looked down, a frown visible on his face. “You are not doing this for a cheap thrill, are you?”
“Nay! Ada! I only want to make sure the punishment is carried out correctly, and quickly, I might add. I wish to be there anyway, and Celeborn has already stated this has not been done for some time. Who else would be willing to whip Rumil? If not for their own feelings on it but for fear of how Haldir would treat a volunteer for such a task. I would be an obvious choice!”
Thranduil shut his eyes and lightly shook his head before looking back to Celeborn. “Would you approve of this?”
Celeborn hesitated. “I… I suppose. I can think of no other punishment, and he has a point about volunteers for it. I had considered someone else to do the whipping, but this seems fitting.”
“Who else would you have do it?” inquired Legolas.
Celeborn frowned. “Orophin.”
“Why?” Thranduil gasped.
“Should he not be punished as well? He put Rumil up to the idea as it is, although he backed out. Being made to whip his youngest brother would be a suitable punishment.”
“Nay. I believe I am the better choice. Orophin would go easy on him, no matter what you said.”
Celeborn sighed again, feeling uneasy. “Alright. Then it is done. Rumil shall be whipped at the hands of Prince Legolas.” He stood and left the talan without looking back or waiting for Thranduil.
Thranduil glanced down to his smiling son again. “I hope you know what you have done.”
*************************
Haldir waited in his talan for Thranduil to return. He had left some time ago and the wait was unbearable. He knew justice needed to be served and Celeborn was taking too long in deciding. But Haldir could not help but fear for his youngest brother.
The creaking of the door snapped him back to attention. He jumped to his feet and waited for Thranduil to shut the door behind him.
“Well?” Haldir pleaded. “Has he made a decision?”
“Yes. But only with a little help from myself and, mostly, Legolas.”
Haldir groaned and fell back into his chair. “And what does Legolas suggest? Shipping him off to live with the orcs?”
Thranduil walked across the room. He had been dreading this the whole way back to the talan. He smiled and sat himself down on Haldir’s lap. Putting an arm around his shoulders, he leaned in to claim his mouth. Haldir moaned into him, his hand sliding up to his backside to brace him on his lap. Thranduil could feel Haldir begin to harden under his leggings and smiled into his kiss.
Without warning, Haldir pulled from the kiss, slightly pushing Thranduil away from him. He grabbed the Silvan’s shoulders to keep himself from falling off his lap. “Wait! What about Rumil?”
Thranduil smiled and leaned back into him. “I did not think you would want that!” he joked, claiming his mouth again.
Haldir growled as he pushed him back again. “I do not! I want to know what Celeborn has decided on his punishment!”
“Haldir, that can wait.”
“No. No it cannot. He is my brother! You are only stalling! It is that bad?”
Thranduil sighed. “I am afraid so. He is to be whipped.”
Haldir gasped. “Whipped?!”
“Yes.”
“You protested, did you not?”
“I could not. It is not my decision.”
“And Celeborn would not have decided this!”
“No, it was a suggestion from Legolas.”
“To which you could have protested.”
“Haldir, I believe it is a suitable punishment. I am sorry.”
Haldir’s face reddened with anger. In one shove, Thranduil found himself smacking down to the wooden floor at his feet. He looked up shocked as Haldir stood over him. “Get out.”
“Haldir, wait…”
“Get out, Thranduil. Our time together is over.”
“Haldir! Please! Just hear me out!”
Haldir reached down and took Thranduil’s arm, pulling him to his feet. Looking in to his eyes he growled again. “I have heard enough. You know the punishment is too harsh. And why is Legolas not being punished for touching Rumil inappropriately? As far as I see it, Rumil was only defending himself.”
“He went too far, Haldir!”
“And so have you. Do not trouble yourself with how to continue our relationship once you leave Lothlorien. It is over.”
“Haldir, please! I…”
“Goodbye, Thranduil.”
He could feel the tears welling in his eyes as the sound of his heart breaking rang in his head. Standing tall and trying to remain proud, he looked at Haldir. Noticing the tears he was also trying to fight back, Thranduil drooped his shoulders again. “As you wish, Haldir. But may I say one thing?”
“Make it quick.”
“I love you. I cannot help it, and will not fight it. But I understand your feelings. Goodbye, Haldir.”
He turned and walked towards the door. Pausing, he hoped Haldir would change his mind. Hearing no protest, he sighed and pulled open the door.
The door shut quietly and Haldir sucked in his breath. Finally allowing the tears to fall down his cheeks, he sat again and stared out the window. Now all he needed to figure out was if the tears were truly for Thranduil or for Rumil.
