Chapter 10
The morning dawned cool in the Shire. Sam, Merry and Pippin were already at the Gaffers smail eager to get started. Sam checked in on Rosie and found her awake. He quickly went to her and hugged her. “Oh Sam!” Rosie cried. “What’s going to happen?”
Sam rubbed her back. “Shhh. It’ll be all right you’ll see. We’ll find him and bring him back.” Rosie nodded against Sam’s shoulder. “Samwise.” The Gaffer called. “We best get a move on the suns peeking up.” Sam released Rosie and the two smiled at each other. “I’ll see you later Rosie.” Sam said. “Be careful and good luck.” Rosie called after him as tears spilled out of her eyes.
Sam, Merry, Pippin and Hamfast had been assigned, along with several other groups of 4 to 5 hobbits, to search the lands between the town square and Bag End. While other groups had been assigned to the woods between Hobbiton and Buckland. Sam had started to protest. He felt that if Frodo were anywhere he more than likely was in the area between Buckland and Bree. But the Gaffer shushed him quickly saying, “The Sheriff knows what he is doing. Word has been sent out and there are search parties leaving Bree heading back this way.” Sam’s shoulders slumped. “Don’t worry son, We’ll find him.” Hamfast said putting an arm around his son’s shoulders.
They set off carefully searching every square inch for any sign that Frodo may have been taken this way. By noon the four hobbits were becoming very discouraged. There were no signs that anyone had been through here in the past week let alone the last 24 hours. The four hobbits sat down to eat a small lunch that Bell had packed for them.
“This is useless!” Merry stated. “We’re just wasting time. We should have searched the woods behind Bag End!” He threw down the remains of his sandwich. “Master Brandybuck,” the Gaffer said “I understand your concerned for Frodo, but the Sheriff has his deputies searching that area as we speak. If we don’t see anything soon we’ll turn back toward town. We’re supposed to meet back in the town square after dark anyway.” They continued eating in silence.
Just as they finished eating Pippin spoke up, “Mr. Gamgee, may I see that drawing of the man we’re looking for?” A nagging feeling of recognition had been burning in his mind since he first saw it the night before. Hamfast handed the picture to Pippin. Pippin took it and examined it closely. His brow furrowed. “What is it Pip?” Merry asked. Sam looked up at the two of them. Pippin beckoned him and Merry to have a closer look at the picture. “Look closely. Does this remind either of you two of someone?” Pippin asked. Merry and Sam took a closer look at the picture and recognition hit them almost at the same time. “Hey that’s...” Sam began. ‘...Ferny!!” Merry finished. “I thought so!” Pippin added. Hamfast looked up in surprise. “You boys know this person?”
“Well, if its who we think it is,” Sam said “he’s one 'o them ruffians what gave us trouble when we first came back. Mr. Merry ran him off.” Hamfast looked at the boys, “How certain of this are you?” he asked. “Its him all right!” Merry said. “Boys, I suggest we get back to town and find the Sheriff!” Sam, Merry and Pippin were on their feet instantly. They felt confident that now that they knew who had Frodo they would be able to find him.
When Hamfast and the boys got back to the town square they found the Sheriff and some of the town elders going over maps of the area. The Sheriff looked up expectantly. “You find something?” he asked. Hamfast looked at the boys and said. “Not exactly..” Sam spoke up “Beggin your pardon but we think we know who took Mr. Frodo” he said. “We first encountered him in Bree a little over a year ago.” Said Merry. “He didn’t act too kindly to us then and he didn’t like it when we came back” Pippin added. The Sheriff looked from one to the other of them. “He gave us some trouble at the Buckland Gate when we returned to the Shire.” Merry explained. “We had to crash the gate and I ran him off.”
“Well I suppose that speaks for motive.” The Sheriff said. “Would any of you happen to know this persons name or where he hangs out?” The three looked at each other. “His name is Bill Ferny.” Sam said bile rising in his throat at the mention of the name. “As for where he hangs out, no sir, we don’t.”
“All right” Said the Sheriff. “As soon as the other search parties start reporting in we’ll ask them if they know anything about this man.”
The Sheriff looked at Merry, Sam and Pippin. “You boys look exhausted. Did you get ANY sleep last night?” The three shook their heads. “Hamfast, I suggest you take these boys home to get some rest.” Sam protested this suggestion “Beggin your pardon but I would rather stay and continue searching.” he said. Merry and Pippin nodded their heads in agreement. “The Sheriff is right, you boys do look haggard. Lets go back to the Row and see how Rosies faring today.”
At the mention of Rosie, Sam’s face lit up. Merry elbowed Pippin and they both snickered. “What of Mr. Frodo though?” Sam asked. “When we hear of something we will send word to you.” The Sheriff replied. Sam looked at his friends and then at his Gaffer. He nodded his head and turned toward home. The others followed him.
