Chapter 10
“Are you sure you do not want to come with me?” Haldir asked with a spark of hope in his voice.
“This is my home now, as it is Rúmil’s. You know this, Haldir,” Orophin answered with a frown. “But we will visit you,” he added more cheerfully.
“And I will visit you just as often,” Haldir promised as he embraced his younger brother.
“I wish you all the best,” said Orophin. “But know this, brother: if things should not work out between you and Thranduil, you will always be welcome here. Rúmil and I will always be here for you. ”
“Hannon lle, Orophin. ‘Tis a great comfort to know this.”
“Aye, a comfort, but one that will not be needed,” said a voice coming from behind them.
Haldir and Orophin turned around to see their other brother approaching.
“He will not be coming back here but to pay us a visit from time to time, of that I am sure.”
“Rumil,” Haldir said as he went to hug his other sibling.
“I will miss you,” said Rumil, teary eyed. “But I know you are right to go. ‘Tis time you and Thranduil embrace your love.”
“Farewell, my brother,” said Haldir with a firm squeeze of Rumil’s shoulder. A quick friendly kiss with both his brothers and he hopped on his horse and rode off, slowly disappearing into the thick haze of the early morning.
*
Tranduil froze at the sight of a dark, hooded figure standing in his bedchamber.
“Who are you?” he demanded, a slight tremor in his low voice. The king gasped when the mysterious figure turned to face him. “Haldir?”
The guardian lowered his hood and opened his mouth to speak but his words were eaten by a fervent kiss. He sighed against Thranduil’s lips and went limp in his arms.
“Haldir…” Thranduil whispered in between kisses and tears of joy stained his cheeks. “Have you come to stay?” he asked, breathless.
“Aye,” said Haldir, mesmerized by the light of the sconce that danced in Thranduil’s eyes. “If you would still have me.”
“You know I would,” said Thranduil, burying his nose in Haldir’s silky tresses. “Why did you come disguised and in secret?” he asked at last. “And how did you get passed the Guard?”
“I am well acquainted with the Mirkwood Guard,” Haldir answered with a twinkle in his eyes. “And I wanted to surprise you.”
“I could not imagine a more pleasant surprise,” Thranduil said and claimed his lips once more. “Come, I will draw you a bath and then we will eat. Unless you wish do eat first?”
“Nay, I would rather bathe first,” Haldir answered, one corner of his lips curving up in a wicked smile. Thranduil’s breath caught in his throat under the hungry look the younger Elf gave him, but he quickly composed himself and strode of towards the bathing chamber to prepare Haldir’s bath.
“Won’t you join me?” Haldir asked as he stepped into the stone tub.
Thranduil stood stiffly in the doorway. Oh, how he wanted that Elf; but tonight was not the night for a quick rump in the bath. It was going to be their first night together in years, and he wanted to give Haldir a special welcome.
“I would love to join you, lirimaer, but I still have a few quick tasks that I want to finish so that nothing stands between us for the rest of the night.” The king tried not to wince at the sound of his own words. He would never put anything before Haldir hoped that the guardian would not believe this was so and become angry.
“Then please do hurry,” said Haldir, apparently undisturbed, “I do not think I can bear being away from you for long.”
“It will only be a moment, melethron.” Thranduil resisted the urge to go near his beloved and kiss him, knowing that he would instantly become a puddle on the floor, unable to tend to his plans. “Would you join my in my private dining hall tonight?”
“Aye,” Haldir said with a smile. He would not have been very eager to reveal his presence to all the others yet.
“Good. Come when you are ready.” With one last look of longing cast in Haldir’s direction he left the bathroom, closing the door behind him.
*
Haldir knew all along that his lover was up to something, that his “duties” had to do with preparing their evening. He wondered what surprises awaited him before the night was over as he secured silver clips, which had purchased the night before he left ‘Lorien, in his hair. He had been particularly drawn to the tiny adornments and bought them, hoping they would please Thranduil as well. Once the hairclips were in place, Haldir took one last appraising look at himself in the mirror. A slight smirk played on his lips. For the first time in his life he felt proud of his own good looks.
The king’s private dining hall was significantly smaller than the public one and much cozier. Warm firelight in ever corner, along with the light of the candles on the table, gave the room a warm glow and the air smelled deliciously of roasted duck and other foods.
Haldir took his seat next to the king’s empty chair, waiting for his beloved to arrive. A bottle of white wine, Haldir’s favorite, stood on the table, ready to be poured. Haldir became lost in his thoughts, staring absentmindedly at the wine label when he felt the gentle laying of hands on his shoulders.
“What are you thinking about?” Thranduil asked, massaging the iron muscles beneath Haldir’s smooth skin.
“You,” Haldir answered truthfully.
Thranduil smiled. “I think about you a lot as well,” he said as he took his seat. “I still cannot believe you are here. I fear that in the morning I will wake up and it will all have been a dream.”
Haldir placed his hand tenderly on top of the king’s. “’Tis not a dream.” His knees trembled as he looked deep into Thranduil’s emerald eyes. All those years they were apart he thought he had remembered his love’s face down to the last detail, but seeing him again proved that the imagination could not recreate such beauty. Haldir’s thoughts were interrupted by the sound of an echoing *ching* as Thranduil lifted the silver lid from the tray, revealing the main course.
Dinner was eaten in silence for Haldir was starving and the food was delicious and both of the Elves were extremely nervous being together again. It was not until dessert that the couple warmed up to each other and the atmosphere became more playful. They took turns feeding each other the fruit-topped cheesecake while flirting and laughing.
Then there came a kiss so soft and tender that the Elves lost themselves in one another completely. Slowly, it deepened and became so passionate that when the stopped for air they were ready to tear their clothes of right then and there.
“Nay,” said Thranduil, breathless.
“Why not?”
“I wish to do it right this time.”
“What do you mean?” Haldir asked, his voice betraying his worry.
Thranduil began to fidget nervously. I...uh… I wanted to give you this…” he managed to say, and when Haldir’s gaze dropped from the king’s eyes down to his hands he saw that Thranduil had produced a ring. Haldir accepted the gift. The ring was a mithril band, with words so sweet they were only meant for Haldir to know engraved in elvish script.
“Hannon lle,” Haldir whispered, and he felt his eyes become moist with tears of joy.
“I would bind myself to you, melethen,” Thranduil said with a tremor in his voice.
“And I to you,” said Haldir, throwing himself at the golden-haired king. They’re lips met again in a passionate kiss which Thranduil was the first to break, again.
“I am willing to wait until we are bound, if you wish, before we…. I do not want you to feel…”
Haldir silenced his beloved with soft lips. “This token of your love, and the fact that you have still welcomed me after so many years and never stopped writing has already showed me that you want more than just my body,” he said. “I think I have waited long enough. I am ready to celebrate our love tonight, as long as you do not object.”
Thranduil embraced the guardian tightly. “Nay, I have no objections…” He leaned his head back allowing his lusty lover better access to his neck. “Except to doing it on the table. I would have us make love in the bedchamber tonight.”
Haldir stopped kissing him and smiled. “Have you planned something lirimaer?”
