Chapter 10.
Eomer let out a deep sigh as he thought back on his life. It had indeed been a full one. He had seen times of war and that had ended in victory bring great bonds of friendships to many.
It was his life with Nessa that could make him smile, even now years after the birth of their two children, their grandchildren and eventually Nessa's passing.
He had seen many die, most during that war of the ring, others as age had gotten the best of them but Nessa's death had been the hardest to face. She had died in his arms and surely he would have followed her if she had made him promise to stay awhile longer, for the sake of their children and the people of Rohan. For months after her death he had searched for something or someone to blame yet never finding any.
" Soon my love" He whispered as he tossed a single pedal of a white rose into the wind, something he had done every night since his wife's burial.
His silence the next day had been noticed by many but out of great respect for their king they said nothing of it. He saw their concern for him as they took in his tired form. He had no doubt that he felt as tired as he appeared.
Sitting at the head of the master table allowed him to look freely around the room. The first one to come to view was his daughter, the youngest of his children. She had her mother's eyes and an equal love for horses.
Eomer smiled as he watched his daughter lift her own daughter onto her lap, her husband sat at her side. He was a decent man a good match for his daughter however it had taken Eomer a long time to see that. He had been reluctant to give up his daughter so easily.
"Father?" Eolooklooked over at her, seeing her concerned look " is everything alright?"
Eomer pulled himself from his chair and walked over to her, placing a gentle kiss on her forehead.
" Everything is fine, my dear" The look she gave him proof she had not been fully convinced.
As he headed out if the room he saw his Son, His first born and heir to the thrown of Rohan. It was only out of stubbornness that had kept Eomer from stepping down as king. It was not that his son was not ready for he was more then ready for this responsibility it was Eomer who was not ready to step down. It seemed to him that this was the only thing left in his control.
Catching his son's eyes he gave a slight nod of his head as he left the great hall. He was in need of some air and he knew the exact place to go.
Many times had he come to this hill, her hill. It was the one place he could still feel her presence. Hear her soft laugh in the winds breeze.
Over the years many things had changed in Rohan, The stables being one of them. No longer could they bee seen from the hilltop. The old structure long ago burned to the ground. A new stable had been built but on the other side of Rohan. To Eomer the memories were still there.
"Kaimelar" Her voice sounded in his mind. He had asked her what she would name her horse.she had seen the question in his eyes for she had told him it meant 'dreamer' in Elven. A name Legolas once called her as he had found her silently watching the nights stars.
He could easily see her now, riding proudly on Kaimelar. There was not a day that passed where she had not ridden her horse. Even during her days with child would she ride, he was grateful that the horse seemed to be extra gentle during these times.
Sensing someone approaching he turned to see none other then his son.
"Your sister sends you." Eomer gave his son an amused look
"She is concerned" He nodded
" She has a kind heart much like her mother"Eomer placed a hand on his son's shoulder. " I am a little tired but otherwise fine"
Satisfied with his father's answer he returned towards the palace.
Eomer watched his son then turned back to where the stable once stood. Reminding him of the many changes that had occurred over the years. Many of his friends were long gone including Eowyn and Faramir. All except a handful of elves had sailed to the west towards the Gray Havens. Aragorn and Arwen still ruled in Gonder and Eomer had a feeling their reign would last for years to come.
" It will not be long, my love " Eomer whispered once more into the wind " We shall once again be together"
Taking a few more minutes to remember old time and favorite memories Eomer slowly headed back to the palace
Every once in awhile Eomer would walk slowly through the city of Rohan. It was something he had often done with Nessa. She had loved her people deeply and enjoyed spending time among them. That had been the one lesson she had insisted their children always remember. That being from a royal family did not mean they had the right to treat other as if their lives were not worth just as much. For she had believed that all life was precious no matter what title they held in life.
Just as he did many times before he greeted everyone pleasantly, smiling as he watched the young children playing among themselves. He knew Nessa would be happy with how Rohan was this day.
It was long after the sun had set when he had finally returned to the palace. Stopping in one of the many corridors when he saw his daughter's husband. Their eyes locked and they both knew what was to come this night.
"Keep your promise" Eomer broke the silence then turned and headed to his own private chamber. The younger man could only nod in response. The promise to always keep safe the king's daughter safe had been made long ago.
Closing the door behind him as he entered his private chamber, a room he had shared for many years with his wife now feeling cold and empty without her shining light to ad to it's warmth.
Reaching for another rose pedal he was not surprised to find only one had remained. His time here was over, he had known this now for some time. Going out onto the terrace he released the final pedal into the wind then took one last look over the city before heading back inside.
Laying himself down on his bed Eomer kept his sword in his hand. His mind slowly wandered to early days with Nessa and at some point during the night his eyes closed one final time.
Eomer had left one final order, that upon his death he did not wish t be placed in with the remains of the past king of Rohan but to be placed along side his Queen ensuring that not only would he stay at her side in life but in death as well...
