Chapter Ten
Disclaimer: Nope, we don’t own them. Wish we did. This never happened (well, to the best of our knowledge), it’s just a figment of our twisted little imaginations. And we do hope that you enjoy it. :-D
A few hours later, Elijah woke up with a splitting headache. He tried to sit up in bed, but found himself surprisingly dizzy.
“Orli?” he croaked, trying to look around. The edges of his vision were black.
“So you awaken at last,” Vanessa said from the doorway leading to the room. “Don’t try to move. You’re very weak.”
Elijah shied away from her voice.
“Get away from me,” he mumbled weakly. “I know what you are. You can’t fool me like you did Orlando.”
“I don’t intend to fool you, morsel,” she said, slowly moving toward him. “Your weakness cannot be exploited by deception.”
“What weakness?” Elijah asked, his eyes widening fearfully.
“In three days, the one you love will be turned completely,” she said, sitting on the edge of the bed. “The odds of him finding you in that time with only those two fools to help him are slim. The only way to be with him is to follow him into darkness.”
She leaned toward him and ran her hand down his pallid cheek. Elijah tried to pull away, but some unseen force held him in place.
“He’s right,” she whispered. “You do have beautiful eyes.”
Elijah blinked. She knew! She knew his thoughts!
“What. . .what else did he think about me?” he asked, unable to help himself.
Vanessa smiled victoriously.
******
“God, my brain hurts,” Billy whined, closing ‘Vampire: A History’ and rubbing his eyes. Dom was drooling on a copy of ‘Nosferatu’, already asleep.
“What time is it?” Billy asked, then looked at the clock. “Ah fuck, it’s three AM.”
Orlando sat on the bed, leaning against the headboard, a copy of ‘Dracula’ lying open across his lap. He was staring off into space, a look of sss oss on his face.
He suddenly became aware that Billy had spoken and blinked, glancing at the other man. “I’m sorry, what did you say?” he asked. “I must’ve spaced.”
“You’re not gonna try to eat us again, are you?” Billy asked, looking worried.
Orlando shook his head. He didn’t care about feeding. He just wanted Elijah back.
“It’s late,” he said, rubbing his forehead. “I think Dom’s got the right idea. We can pick this up after we’ve got some sleep.”
“Yeah, okay,” Billy agreed, setting the book aside and stretching. “When do you want to start up again?”
Orlando shrugged. “It doesn’t matter. Whenever you guys wake up is fine.”
He had a feeling he wasn’t going to be getting much sleep anyway. He was too worried about what Vanessa might be doing to Elijah.
Billy nudged Dom awake, and the pair heaoff off to their rooms.
******
After countless hours in unnatural darkness, Elijah stirred, trying to get a sense of his surroundings. The room he was in was nondescript, however, had no windows, and was completely silent. The air felt cool and damp, as if he were underground.
He managed to get to the door only to find it locked and barred from the other side. He wasn’t surprised.
Okay Lij, think.
His mind raced over the information he’d retained from his research, and he formulated a desperate plan. He had no idea if it would work, but he had to try.
He headed back to bed, lay down again, and closed his eyes, trying to exploit the connection between predator and prey that seemed to be a major part of vampire lore. Once bitten, a person was connected to the vampire who had drank from him. HOW connected was something he was about to find out.
He closed his eyes, and tried to concentrate.
. . .
And all he could think about were the stupid Arwen/Aragorn dream sequences from Lord of the Rings. Shit.
He opened his eyes again and took a deep breath, trying to clear his head. He could do this. He could.
He closed his eyes and tried again, trying to reach his consciousness out.
Please Orli. Hear me, he thought desperately.
******
After Billy and Dom had left, Orlando had collapsed onto Elijah’s bed, reluctant to go back to his own room. He’d laid on his back, staring up at the ceiling.
He was just starting to drift off when he heard a voice that definitely did NOT belong to him.
Please Orli. Hear me.
Fuck, I just imagined it, he thought sadly. He could’ve sworn he’d heard Elijah’s voice. . .
Elijah’s eyes flew open and he gasped for breath. He was sure he’d seen Orlando for a moment before something yanked him away.
Despite a sudden headache and a lump in his throat, he settled in and tried again, this time trying to reach out with feelings instead of thoughts. Lord knew he had plenty of feelings built up inside him.
Orlando had just settled back down and was drifting between awake and asleep when he was suddenly bombarded with feelings that were not his own. He felt sadness, mixed in with pain and mingled with love. There was something familiar too. . .just beyond his grasp. . .
Elijah, he thought. Even in his dream-like state of consciousness, the very thought of his friend made him feel sad.
Please. . .just be okay. . .I miss you. . .
I’m okay! Elijah thought, feeling a surge of hope. Orlando was thinking about him! He was sure he’d heard his thoughts. The information started tumbling from his head.
I miss you too. I don’t know where I am. Underground somewhere, I think. God, I wish I could see you!
Suddenly, he could. Though his eyes were closed, he could see. . .his room?
What are you doing in my room? he thought.
Orlando blinked. . .or at least he thought he did. . .he was pretty sure his eyes were still closed. Whoa, this was weird.
Uh. . .I, um, didn’t want to leave. he thought sheepishly. So. . .um. . .is this a dream or am I just going nuts?
If it was a dream. . .did that make him Aragorn or Arwen?
Are you okay?! he thought worriedly, pushing thoughts of the Aragorn-Arwen dream sequence away. She hasn’t hurt you, has she?!
He’d kill her with his bare hands if she had. . .
“I don’t think so,” Elijah responded, shaking his head. It felt more like he was talking than thinking now. Suddenly, he felt like he was actually standing in his hotel room. The details around him solidified as he looked around. “I woke up dizzy, but I think I’m fine.”
He looked at the man on the bed. The object of his obsessive desire, of the ache that never seemed to leave him lately, and forgot about everything else. Forgot about the peril they both were in. Forgot about anything mattering but that moment. He rushed toward the bed, sliding against Orlando, burying his face in his shoulder.
“I love you so much,” he murmured, the thought springing to his lips unbidden. “I know it’s hard to believe, but I do. Every time I see your face, even if it’s in a photograph, I just want to break down and cry.”
He realized then that he was just saying everything he was thinking: thoughts and words had become the same thing. In this dream world he’d summoned, his defenses were breached. He couldn’t spare either of them from his irrational, desperate longings.
“She told me I could follow you,” he continued. “That we could be together. Forever. It sounded so tempting. Is it true?”
Orlando was stunned. Whoa, just a second ago, he’d been completely alone and now he had Elijah in his arms, his face buried in his shoulder. Had he somehow conjured up Elijah? Or was this a dream? And if so, whose. . .his or Elijah’s?
He decided it didn’t really matter as he folded his arms around Elijah, hugging him tightly. “I don’t know why you love me,” he whispered softly as he stroked Elijah’s hair. “I don’t deserve your love, Lij. I’m a jerk and an asshole and a complete wanker.”
He licked his lips, debating how best to answer Elijah’s last question. “Yes, it’s true,” he said finally. “All I would have to do is bite you and have you drink my blood. . .but Elijah, you don’t want to be a vampire. I’m not worth you giving up your life like that. Even if I am starting to fall in love with you.”
“That’s worth everything,” Elijah said immediately, lifting his head up, his blue eyes shining with desperate hope. “What else has any real meaning?! I’ve been waiting years to hear you say something like that! I wouldn’t have to sit and watch you jump from girl to girl, all the while trying to do the same thing, but feeling numb inside. I can’t do it anymore! It’s killing me!”
Orlando softly caressed Elijah’s cheek, his eyes shining with unshed tears. “Elijah, I never meant to hurt you. I. . .I was too blind to even notice how you felt. I don’t know what I’ve done to deserve your love, but I’m glad that you’re here.”
He licked his lips, swallowing. “When Vanessa took you. . .I was. . .I was so scared. I didn’t know what to do. We’re gonna rescue you, Elijah. Somehow. As soon as we figure out where you are.”
“Rescue me from what?” Elijah asked softly, his own eyes shimmering. He closed them and leaned into Orlando’s touch, nuzzling his hand. “Maybe this is my rescue. I don’t know. Maybe things are working out exactly the way they should. I can take care of you! And Vanessa, if you really need a woman around! I’m willing to compromise!”
He winced and pulled away a little.
“That sounded really pathetic, didn’t it?” he mumbled.
Orlando smiled slightly, blinking rapidly. “I made a promise that you’d never lose me,” he said softly. “And I intend to keep it. But as as a vampire. I want to be able to go out in the sun again. I want to surf. I want to eat real food. This liquid diet I’m on. . .it’s not all it’s cracked up to be.”
“I want a normal life. . .with you,” hid sid softly. “If you’ll give me a chance.”
Elijah nodded immediately.
“Take a thousand chances ou wou want them,” he said passionately. Then he looked Orlando dead in the eyes and held his gaze, something he’d never be able to do if this wasn’t a dream.
“Kiss me?” he pleaded gently.
Orlando smiled brightly and nodded. “As you wish.” He slid his hand from Elijah’s cheek to the back of his head, pulling him down as he leaned toward him until their lips met in a kiss. It was hesitant at first and then grew more confident as passion consumed them.
ElijElijah giggled in spite of himself at first. Well, just call him Buttercup!
Sigh. He’d loved that movie. Andre the Giant was in it!
What a ridiculous thing to think during the first kiss Orlando had given him that wasn’t going to be immediately followed by a bite.
The other man’s increasing boldness helped him focus quickly, however. Orlando’s lips felt slightly ephemeral, reminding Elijah that this was only a dream, but he didn’t care. Real kisses would follow. He’d promised.
A normal life, he’d said. He could so handle that.
He opened his mouth, sliding his tongue against Orlando’s ghostlike lips, emboldened by the not-quite-real nature of the encounter.
Orlando moaned softly, sliding his hands down Elijah’s back as he opened his mouth to his tongue. Fuck, this was only a dream.
But there would be plenty of chances for the real thing once he, Dom and Billy rescued Elijah. And damn, he realized they still didn’t know where he was.
As he brushed his tongue against Elijah’s, he tried to conjure up an image of the room Elijah was in. Maybe it would give him some clue as to his location.
Or perhaps if he tried concentrating on Vanessa. . .
No, he’d rather concentrate on Elijah and their kiss right now, thanks.
Elijah unthinkingly straddled Orlando’s hips, lacing his fingers into the other man’s hair. The tug on his fingers from the curly locks wasn’t as strong as he’d remembered it, but that somehow made it easier for him. Safer.
Orlando groaned, thrusting up against Elijah before he could stop himself. God bless this dream. He had a feeling Elijah wouldn’t be so bold in real life.
He slid his hands under Elijah’s shirt, his fingers softly stroking his skin as he thoroughly explored his mouth with his tongue.
Elijah sighed, then quickly pulled his shirt off before lunging at Orlando’s mouth again. He moaned as he felt his blood boil unnaturally. He felt as if he wasn’t entirely in control of his actions.
He suddenly became very afraid that Vanessa was somehow involved in this. Hadn’t she fed from him too?
Orlando moaned into Elijah’s mouth as his hands roamed over every inch of skin Elijah had exposed by taking off his shirt. He hated that it was only a dream, but consoled himself with the thought of the real thing once this nightmare was over with. . .
And speaking of nightmares. . .surely Vanessa had to know what they were doing. . .weren’t she and he joined?
Fuck. . .were they playing right into her hands? Did she have some kind of scheme planned?
But he couldn’t really stop kissing Elijah long enough to try to find out where she was. . .
He moved his hands up Elijah’s chest, brushing his fingertips lightly across his nipples.
Elijah was seconds from pulling away when Orlando’s fingers brushed over the sensitive areas on his chest. He whimpered softly and gave in once again, his willpower characteristically nonexistent.
“Elijah,” Orlando moaned into his friend(lover?)’s mouth as his fingers continued to tease his nipples. “You’re so beautiful.”
And he couldn’t help but start to feel a little uneasy. This dream was going too perfectly. Any minute now, something bad was going to happen.
“So are you,” Elijah breathed urgently, then dove for his ear, sucking his earlobe for all he was worth. It was kind of difficult when things were only half-there, but he managed.
Orlando moaned, shivering as he lightly pinched Elijah’s nipples, rolling the hardened nubs between his thumb and forefinger. “I want this to be real,” he gasped. “Not just a dream.”
“Oh “Oh God, me too!” Elijah gasped suddenly, reluctantly reminding himself that it WAS a dream. DAMN it!
Orlando reluctantly moved his hands away from Elijah’s nipples. They needed to concentrate on getting him out of Vanessa’s clutches. “Okay, so Vanessa knew I was in your hotel room. If I could do what she did, I could find you, right?”
“Huh?” Elijah asked, pausing only momentarily before kissing Orlando’s neck. Make out now. Talk later. Yes. Good plan.
“Oh god, Lij,” Orlando breathed as he tilted his head back. Eh, they could worry about Vanessa later. . . They had lots of time.
He slowly slid his hands down Elijah’s back, ghosting his fingertips over his spine.
“No no, you said. . .something about Vanessa,” Elijah persisted, even as he kissed a trail up Orlando’s neck to his jawline. “God this is so hot.”
It was now official: everything he was thinking was coming right out his mouth.
Orlando shivered, his breath coming out in gasps as he slid his hands down to grasp Elijah’s hips. “She knew. . .that I was in your hotel room. . .” he said breathlessly. “If I did what she did, I could find you.”
“Fuck, Lij, you’re driving me crazy,” he moaned.
“All I did was. . .picture myself where you were,” Elijah responded as he slid his hands up Orlando’s chest. “But I can’t see anything from my room. There’s no windows. Just this weird. . . Oh God Orli, I need you so badly!”
Suddenly, the hands touching him felt very real, and his eyes flew open, yanking him back to his room. He yelped as he discovered it was no longer Orlando holding onto him, but Vanessa.
“Let go of me!” he exclaimed, trying to shove her away. Ahhhhh! Where were his clothes?!
Orlando’s eyes flew open and he sat up, breathing hard. “Fuck, Elijah!” he hissed. What had happened? One minute they’d been in the middle of an intense makeout session and the next. . .poof! Elijah was gone.
“Oh shit,” Orlando said, paling. Had Vanessa done something to Elijah?
He squeezed his eyes shut, frantically trying to picture himself wherever Elijah was.
Please let this work, he prayed silently. Though what good he was going to do in a dream, he wasn’t so sure. . .
Vanessa’s laugh was the first thing Orlando could hear, mocking, gleeful. Two shadowy figures were struggling just out of his reach.
Suddenly, the top figure looked toward him. Vanessa’s face materialized in front of him.
“Thorndon House. Basement,” she said in challenge. “You want him? Come get him.”
Orlando glared at her, hoping she could feel every ounce of hatred he had for her. “I’ll be there, bitch.”
He’d kill her. He’d fucking kill her.
I’m coming, Elijah, he thought. Just hang in there, love.
He opened his eyes, glancing at the bathroom hesitantly. Shit, how was he supposed to handle the vampire arsenal if he was affected by it too?
“Dom and Billy,” he muttered, diving for the phone. He quickly dialed their room and impatiently listened to it ring. “Come on, damn it, pick up.”
If they were fucking each other now, he was going to kill them with his bare hands. . .
As he waited for someone to answer, Elijah’s cell phone started ringing next to the computer on the desk.
Orlando blinked, staring at the cell phone. Who the hell would be calling Elijah? Didn’t they know he was kidnapped?!
Duh. Of course not.
He scowled, slamming the phone down. Damn it, he was so going to kill Dom and Billy. . .maybe he really would eat them this time.
He moved over to the computer desk and picked up Elijah’s cell phone. After staring at it for a few moments, he figured out which button to push and held it up to his ear. “What?” he snapped.
“Orlando? Where’s Elijah?” Viggo’s voice cut through a somewhat weak signal. He sounded urgently concerned.
At the sound of Viggo’s voice, something in Orlando broke and he deflated. “Vanessa took him,” he said, his eyes welling up with tears. “I know where he is though, I just don’t know how to save him. Dom and Billy aren’t answering their phone, the fuckers, and I can’t even touch the shit we need to use against her.”
Viggo launched into a tirade of profanity that would make a sailor blush.
“I’m on the next plane,” he said. “Don’t do anything without me.”
He hung up.
Orlando sighed, feeling a lot better. Okay, Viggo was coming. Everything was going to turn out just fine. They would rescue Elijah and kill Vanessa and he could have his life back!
And work on making that dream he’d shared with Elijah a reality. . .
He set the cell phone back on the desk and then glared at the other phone on the bedside table. He figured Dom and Billy probably needed to know that Viggo was on his way. . .but first. . .
He shut his eyes, taking a deep breath and letting it out slowly. Elijah, if you can hear me, he thought, just hang on. Viggo’s on his way. We’re going to save you. I promise.
******
Elijah blinked weakly, surprised he had the strength even to do that. He felt sleepy and was having trouble breathing. His neck hurt. He realized that it should hurt more, however. That one thing of which he was most aware was a terrifying cold.
“You’ll die if you just lie there,” Vanessa told him after licking the remains of his blood off her lips. “That would be such a shame, when you’re so close to everything you wanted so badly.”
Elijah was sure he could hear Orlando’s voice then. He couldn’t die. He. . .he’d promised not to leave.
Taking the only option open to him, he weakly tilted his head toward Vanessa’s bleeding wrist.
