Orlando and Elizabeth sat at a table in the crowded night club laughing and watching the people. The lights flashed and the music blared. Orlando sipped his drink thoughtfully.
“So, where’s Kate tonight, Orli?” Elizabeth asked, over the noise.
“At some premier, or something.” he replied.
“Or with some other actor...someone more famous than you.” Elizabeth joked, swirling the stir stick in her White Russian.
“Ha ha,” Orlando commented, “ and where is your date? Oh, right. You don’t have one, and you don’t have a life so you spend your Saturday nights with your best friend. Slipped my mind.” Elizabeth threw a crumpled napkin at him.
“Asshole!” She shouted with a smile.
“Whore!” Orlando teased back. Elizabeth had been his best friend for years, and he was used to her sarcasm and humor by now. When he had first started dating Kate, Kate had been a bit jealous of all the time he spent with Elizabeth, but she had gotten used to it. In fact, Elizabeth and Kate got along quite well now. Orlando spotted a young man staring at Elizabeth from a table across the room.
“Hey, Liz, that guy over there fancies you. He’s been staring all night.” He told her, motioning to the guy with a nod.
“Really? That’s fascinating.” Elizabeth replied, rolling her eyes.
“So ask him to dance.” Orlando pushed.
“I’ll pass.” Elizabeth sighed.
“Why?”
“Because I’m not interested.”
“When you grow old you are going to be a bitter, lonely lady. With lots of cats.” Orlando joked, finishing off his beer.
“Hey, I’m perfectly happy how I am.” Elizabeth insisted.
“Yah, all you need is chocolate and Sid Vicious, and you’re good for a night of fun.” Orlando said with a smile. Elizabeth shrugged.
“Sugar and Sex pistols. What’s wrong with that?” She asked. Orlando shook his head playfully.
“God. When’s the last time you got laid?” He inquired.
“Hey, I don’t need sex to keep me going.” Elizabeth shot back.
“Like hell you don’t!” Orlando declared. Elizabeth laughed.
“Ok, so maybe I do. But I’m Oou wou were always the sex addict, Orli. Remember College? I was your roommate, if you forget. And as I recall, I slept with my headphones on most nights.” she reminded him.
“Hey, I was a young man. I had my needs.” Orlando replied. Elizabeth raised an eyebrow at him.
“And now?”
“I still have my needs...” Orlando admitted, “But now I’ve got Kate. Well, most of the time I’ve got Kate.”
“Try ‘a small bit of the time’ you’ve got Kate. Why do you stay with her if she’s never around? Always off to some event or other...” Elizabeth asked him, switching to serious mode. Orlando started on a new d.
.
“It’s not her fault...” He said. Elizabeth shrugged, and looked around.
“So, what’s Dom doing tonight?” She asked, casually switching the subject.
“You fancy Dom, don’t you?” Orlando asked, the smile returning to his face. Elizabeth shook her head.
“No. I was just making conversation.” she replied, smiling back. Suddenly, a great song started playing.
“Oh here we go. Finally, some fucking good music!” Elizabeth declared, “I love The Distillers. C’mon, Orlando. We’re dancing.” She grabbed his arm and pulled him to his feet. He barley had time to set down his drink before Elizabeth pushed him out onto the crowded dance floor. She started to move to the music. Orlando smiled. For as long as he had known her, she had been amazingly fun to have around. Her slightly wavy, shoulder-length, blond hair swirled around her as she danced, framing her face. The faintest freckles dotted across her nose, and she wore only lip gloss. Orlando took her hand and started to dance with her. They danced like that for a while, until the upbeat Distillers song ended.
A lazy, underground California beat began as the DJ switched to Beenie Man’s “Party Hard.” Elizabeth smiled, and put her hands on Orlando’s waist. She pulled his hips to hers as she began maneuvering slowly to the song. Orlando was immediately surprised. He had never danced with Elizabeth before, and she was really good at it. He watched her face, as her eyes sent out pure happiness. She was lost in the music.
Suddenly Orlando was aware of how good she smelt. Like peaches and salt water. Why hadn’t he noticed that before? He put his arms around her and moved with her. Her eyes met his, and she smiled and looked away. Orlando felt a flutter inside him. What the hell was that? Why did he suddenly feel like this? It was as if he was attracted to Elizabeth. He pushed the thought to the back of his head. Yah right. He’d known her for years, and hadn’t felt anything like this.
But there it was. As she pressed her hips to his, Orlando felt himself get a bit aroused. Ok, he admitted to himself, a lot aroused. Elizabeth looked up at him again, but this time instead of smiling or glancing away, her eyes locked with his. She brought her hands up and around his neck, keeping their hips swaying together. Orlando couldn’t help himself. He brought his arms up and pulled her closer to him. Their faces were less than inches away as they danced. Elizabeth’s eyes seemed to tease him, as if daring him to do something more.
When she ran her hands up and down the front of his shirt, he couldn’t help it anymore. He let his lips brush gently across hers. He hesitated, waiting for a reaction from her. Elizabeth took a deep breath before crushing her lips to his. No one in the club noticed their kiss, they all had their own concerns; were having their own fun.
The kiss broke, and they were still dancing. Orlando kept grazing his lips across hers. She dropped her head back to let him play his lips down her neckline. It was impossible for Orlando to concentrate, the way Elizabeth kept grinding her pelvis into his to the beat of the music. He let out a small moan, as she let one of her hands move down between them, slowly dragging splayed fingers down his abdomen, stopping at the hem of his pants. She softly fingered the material there as they continued to dance sensually. He was painfully aware of his erection, as Elizabeth moved against it. He pressed his mouth to hers, and she ran her tongue across his bottom lip.
Then the song was over, and Elizabeth broke the kiss. They both stood there for a moment, breathing hard, their arms still wrapped around each other. Orlando was going crazy, wanting to grab her and touch her and...No, this wasn’t right. She was his best friend, and then there was Kate...it was complicated. But all he could think of at the moment was the aching in his pants.
Luckily, he didn’t have to think much, because Elizabeth did it for him. She pulled out of his embrace and walked over to their table without so much as a word. Hok aok a deep breath and followed her. Sitting back down in his chair, he locked eyes with her across the table. After a minute of awkward silence, Orlando picked up his drink and took a long gulp. He set it back down.
“So...” He began nervously.
“So...” Elizabeth repeated. She bit her lip, and Orlando couldn’t help remembering what those lips had felt like on his. He contemplated leaning over and claiming her mouth again. But that wouldn’t have been the best thing to do.
“Yah... I think we should talk about that.” Orlando said finally, unable to keep his eyes off hers.
“Do we have to?” Elizabeth said, laughing nervously. Orlando smiled back.
“I think we should. I mean, it was...well, I...how was it?” He stammered.
“The kiss, you mean?” She asked him, her eyes dropping to the table. When Orlando nodded, she continued.
“It was...”
“Amazing?” Orlando finished for her. She nodded, blushing.
“But it, uh...I mean, it couldn’t have meant anything. We never...well, we don’t feel...” Elizabeth tried to get her point across, but she couldn’t find the wor
“I completely understand. Yah, me too.” Orlando assured her.
“Good.” She said.
“Good.” He said. There was a bit of silence for a moment. Then Elizabeth started laughing.
“What?” Orlando asked, grinning.
“Listen to us. We’ve known each other forever, and we get all uneasy and skittish just because we make out a little.” Elith dth declared, loosening up a bit.
“I know, it’s like we’re sixteen again.” Orlando laughed.
“You know what, Orli, I think I’m coming down with something. I should probably call it a night.” Elizabeth told him, standing up. Orlando nodded.
“Yah, me too.” He agreed.
“I’ll call you tomorrow. We were going to catch a movie with Kate remember?” She asked him, as she slipped on her black jacket. Orlando noticed that she looked good in it. He nodded.
“Yah, call me.” He said, hugging her.
“Have a great night! Get lots of sleep!” She called to him on her way out. Orlando sunk into his chair.
“Easy for you to say.” He muttered, thinking of the cold shower and all the tossing and turning her was going to be doing that night.
