Forbidden Fruit
“We always long for the forbidden things, and desire what is denied us.”
- Francois Rabelais
Aragorn leaned against the window frame as he watched the leaves falling from the trees. Rivendale was always beautiful this time of year. The emerald grass cradled the fiery leaves of red and gold that fell upon it. Closing his eyes, Aragorn felt the whispering breeze caress his skin. Everything here seemed as if from a dream. The sound of hoof beats approaching made his eyes snap open and brought him back to reality. He slid off the window sill and began to walk down the hall with a brisk pace. Legolas stuck his head out from his room and looked around.
"You heard them too?" He asked stepping into the hall way beside Aragorn.
Aragorn nodded.
"Who or what....do you think it could be?"
Aragorn hesitated beside Legolas. The hoof beats were getting louder now.
"They don't sound threatening. No drum...no horn." Legolas said. His elvish ears were so sensitive.
"That doesn't mean whatever is coming doesn't mean to hard us. We better go out to the gate." Aragorn said as he began to walk with Legolas following closely behind him.
The sun greeted them as they stepped into the courtyard. Aragorn saw Elrond standing at the gate.
"Aragorn! Legolas! Come quickly!" Elrond shouted to them.
Thinking there was trouble, Aragorn and Legolas ran to him with their hands on the hilt of their swords.
"Oh no gentlemen those won't be necessary." Elrond laughed.
Suddenly the hoof beats stopped. Right outside the gate. Slowly they creaked open. The image that greeted them was beyond words. Atop a white horse rode a girl, no older than 20 with porcelain skin, emerald eyes and long flowing red hair. Her name was Ardess.
"Ahh my beautiful girl." Elrond cooed as her down from her horse. "Look how you have grown! I have missed you everyday."
Aragorn and Legolas were stunned. No woman had ever compared to this girl's beauty. Her ruby lips curled into a smile as she wrapped her arms around Elrond.
"As have I father." she said with a sigh. Her voice was like a nightingale's song.
"Gentlemen. This is my other daughter Ardess. I sent her to live in Lothlorien to learn the way's of her people."
Ardess smiled at Aragorn and Legolas. Aragorn felt his heart leap into his chest. His beloved Arwen did not compare to her sister. He knew what he was feeling was wrong. But he couldn't help it.
"You must be Aragorn." She said walking to him. "My sister has told me much about you."
Slowly she leaned him and kissed him on the cheek. Her lips were soft and delicate. She turned and looked at Legolas.
"Legolas." She said with a sly smile. "You've grown up."
"As have you my lady." Legolas managed to get out. He could feel his voice tremble.
Legolas recalled his days of running and playing with Ardess when they were young. He had always had a crush on her. They were inseparable until the day her father sent her to Lothlorien.
"In honor of your return my daughter, there will be a feast tonight." Erond proclaimed. "Come my dear I will show you to your room."
Elrond took Ardess' hand and lead her through the courtyard leaving Aragorn and Legolas stunned.
