Prologue

Orcs, Sauron’s most loathsome creation. Hideous creatures that behaved like ravenous dogs…But, once they were elves, fair folk. Poor lost souls that were tortured and beaten until they broke in both body and mind. They became a mindless hordes; understanding only hate, hunger, and servitude to their master. All know this sad tale, but no one knows all of it…

There was another group, also elves. Originally, Sauron had hoped to create creatures that were as beautiful as they were black of heart. And, indeed, he was successful. Such a delight to the eye they were, but lust for blood and flesh was without bounds. The only characteristics that ruined their disguise as normal elves and gave away the poison within their sweet wine was their teeth, long deadly fangs adorned both the upper and lower jaws, and that this group of ellons could carry and birth children as well as sire them.

But, there was a flaw in Sauron’s plan. These creatures were impossible to control.

Perhaps it is because the elves he picked were mad to begin with. Aye, these were kinslayers; murderers; sadists. Most children are born pure and innocent, but every now and again one is born…tainted. A spark of cruel madness flickers within their souls…and thus were these poor souls.

Perhaps because Sauron made sure that their breaking would not be to the extent of the orcs…less they become just as hideous…leaving them a spark of free will. They would follow none and ripped the throat out of any who tried to master them.

However, rather than destroy them, Sauron banished them to the barren wastelands of the north, hoping that he could someday find a way to leash these creatures, bore any could learn of their very existence—his own secret weapon.

The land was harsh and unforgiving. There was little food and periods of rainfall were centuries apart, but their kind survived, despite that many killed each other in fits of rage or boredom. As ruthless as the land they lived on, they found ways to survive and create their own society.

They had no qualms against eating carrion meat…or each other. Blood was their water and flesh and grass their food. They lived very similar to animals, hunting in packs with their bare teeth. And, they shined with all their morbid beauty and grace.

They lived in a society were strength was the ruling factor and mercy was unknown. It was survival of the fittest.

Their children were raised to be fighters. In fact, it was not uncommon for siblings to kill each other to prove their strengths and to gain the choicest spoils.

But, every now and then, one was born…different…soft. These little ones were unable to achieve the sheer viciousness of the others. They were thinkers not fighters.

Usually they were killed while still young by their parents…an act of compassion considering what would happen should such weak creatures were to be left open to the cruelty of their kin. However, sometimes one or two would be allowed to live, their parents unable to kill them out of love or sick humor.

But these children, few as they may be, make one wonder…were the children of these killers born with the same mad spark their ancient kin or were they born as innocent as any babe and were raised to be as they are by example and the need to survive? Could it be these gentle ones were merely the ones who could not conform to a standard created by society?

These are the thoughts of one such Gentle who succeeded in becoming old enough to leave the wastelands and discover if the all the world is such a cruel place…and to see if he is doomed to have a dark heart full of cruelty and evil.
