Part 1

He stands in front of the mirror. He looks at his tired and exhausted face. Red eyes, eye lids nearly closed, lips dry, skin dirty and unshaved. He looks down at his hands, both wounded, scarred, blood still dripping. He tries to think. He knows every detail of that night as if it was yesterday. Or was it yesterday? He can't remember. His head is empty, only filled with this one memory. All that is left is that evening.

"The Strippin' Pony?", asked Billy.

"I know it sounds crazy, Bills, but it's the best bar in..."

"‘Strippin'...mate, as in ‘getting naked’?", interrupted Orlando.

"Exactly.", answered Dom.

"Ok, I'm going.", said Elijah and stood up from his chair.

It was freezing cold outside. The four boys had got themselves a hut somewhere in New Zealand. They wanted to celebrate Christmas there. Just the four of them refreshing old memories.

"Great, Lij! What about you two? Come on, it's getting fucking boring just staying in this shack and doing nothing but lying about. I want to have some fun!"

Orlando stood up from the couch. "Sounds good, mate. I’m up for it."

They looked at Billy. It always depended on him. It somehow seemed that because he was the oldest of the four he was to decide what they were going to do.

Billy smiled. "Well, why not! Let's go out then!"

~***~

It was a bad idea. He knows it now. How could he have known? It all went suddenly so fast. What could he have done?

~***~

"That was the best idea you’ve ever had, Dom!", cried Billy in Dom's ear.

The music was really a little loud, but that didn't matter. As soon as the four of them got to the bar, Orlando and Elijah grabbed two girls and began dancing the night away only stopping to drink cool Mai Tais and other cocktails. Little podiums were dotted around the room and on them naked women were dancing. So the bar really deserved its name.

"Told ya!", shouted Dom back. "Come on, let's go get some girls!"

He was a little drunk, he could feel it. He stood up and walked away from the booth where they were seated and moved towards the dance floor. Billy just shook his head with a smile and followed his fellow hobbit.

~***~

He walks away from the mirror and sits down on his bed. He lets his head fall into his hands. He stays so for a long time.

~***~

"Dom! Are you alright, mate?"

Dom knows the voice and tries to sit up. Then he realizes that he already is sitting. Back at their booth.

"What happened?", he asked Billy.

"You passed out. Just like that! Fucking scary, to tell you the truth."

He looks into Billy's eyes. Again he gets that feeling. This feeling could destroy it all. This evening, the last few months, years, their friendship. So he just sits there and stares at Billy. And suddenly it begins. He starts to shake. It's not the feeling, he knows that. It's something else. He needs it. Now. He gets up.

"I'm just going...you know.", he says to Billy and leaves again.

Billy stands up. "You are not going alone. I'll tell you that! You could pass out again. You drank too much, Dom, I have to pay attention now. I feel responsible for you three, God knows why!"

Dom stares at Billy as if he was someone from a different planet.

"You heard me. No discussions. Go on with ye!"

~***~

He can't stand it any longer. He has to talk to someone about it. He has to tell somebody that it was all his fault. Billy shouldn't have followed. He could have stopped him. But he didn't.

~***~

The toilet was empty, bar the two hobbits. Dom has been trying to go faster than Billy to be there before him. But there were just too many people. He failed. He had to find another way to get his fix. Billy mustn't see. Dom felt ashamed of it and didn't want the other guys to notice.

"Ok, Dom, just get along, I'll be waiting right here at the sink."

Dom tried to smile, turned around and went into a cubicle. He pulled the little bottle out of his jacket pocket. His hand was trembling, the flask fell to the ground and the pills scattered across the stone floor. Dom quickly picked up the bottle, but that was all he was able to do.

"Dom, what happ...?", Dom heard Billy ask, before he glanced down and fell silent.

"What is this? Dom, are you taking drugs?"

He couldn't hide any longer. He opened the cubicle and the first thing he saw was Billy, standing there in the middle of the pill mess, watching him intently.

"No, they're not drugs!", Dom shouted, holding his medicine tightly in his right hand. "They calm me down!"

"Why do you have to calm down at all? Gimme the bottle!"

Billy made a step forward and snatched it out of Dom's hand.

"Anti-Depressant...", Billy read.

~***~

He runs down the stairs, too fast, he trembles, loses balance and falls down. There he lies. Crying.

~***~

"What do you need them for?"

"It's not your problem!", shouted Dom. He took the bottle out of Billy’s hand and began to leave the toilet.

"That's complete bollocks, Dom! It is my problem! Tell me what’s wrong! Don't you know that you could get addicted to this shit? It’s fucking dangerous! Where did you get them from?"

"I’ve told you already! It's not your problem! So bugger off!"

He left the toilet, returned to the booth to get his jacket and walked quickly out of the "Strippin' Pony". Outside he tried to get to his car on the other side of the street, but Billy was right behind him, running now to catch up with him.

"Dom, wait!"

And he did.

"I think I know the reason. And if I'm right, I can help you. Just stop taking them, alright?"

"Yeah right, you know what's going on inside my head.", Dom answered sarcastically. "You know what, I wish I never had met you, then all this never would have happened. I could still be in Manchester and you in fucking Scotland, and I would never... I would have never..." He stopped. "Just go away, Billy."

He started to cross the street. Lights, a cry - "Dom, watch out!" - , tires squeaking, a touch, a push, hard black asphalt.
