Haldir's First Love

Chapter 1 Elleth and Ellonin

"Ouch! Stop it!" said Lorinaura through clenched teeth as she tore strands of her long ashen hair from Haldir's grasp. If he thought that was endearing, he was sorely mistaken.

"Stop what, little sister?" he retorted with just the slightest smirk. He was so nonchalant that anyone passing by would think her just another whiny elleth. Little did anyone know what she had to put up with; the relentless teasing of the brothers. Rúmil and Orophin tortured her on a regular basis, but Haldir, her favorite of the three, was the nice one. Usually.

"Ouch! You are hurting me! STOP IT NOW, OROPHIN!" On the verge of tears, she was at a loss for what to do. "And I am not your sister!" she shouted through clenched teeth glaring back at Haldir, readying herself to wipe the arrogant, conceited, little haughty look right off of his face. "Rotten oafs!" she muttered to herself.

"What was that, sister? Did you say something?" Rúmil gibed as he pinched her under her arm making her jump, again.

No matter what it was they were supposed to be learning, they always surrounded her. Orophin was invariably to her right, Rúmil to her left and Haldir was always behind her. She took a deep breath, trying to maintain some semblance of control over the anger they so loved to elicit. She was forever trying to restrain herself, hating that such satisfaction was gained from seeing her irate and unable to retaliate. Somehow, they always ended up breaking her, making her look the fool.

Galadriel stepped out of the room only a moment ago, leaving her with these heathens. They were supposed to be doing the rest of the herbal remedies lesson on their own. If the Lady only knew how much she loathed being alone with them here. It seemed they were different in the library. As if the books made them anxious to pull her hair and mock every word she spoke.

They were not like this all of the time. That was what hurt. Well, usually Rúmil and Orophin were, but Haldir...she really liked Haldir. He usually helped her deal with his much younger brothers, though not today. Tightening her fists at another tug of her hair, she squealed, "Are you deaf? I said to stop it!"

"Stop what, Aura?" Orophin said with a grin as she ripped the plait from his hand. They could not have picked a more torturous form of play. Hair pulling was the one thing she hated most. The constant poking of her ribs, pinching and sneaking up on her, scaring her half to death, even the playful little punches to her arms that left bruises from time to time, were not as bad as the hair pulling.

Galadriel swore they did all these things because they liked her. She kept saying, "Orophin and Rúmil are both under fifty. They are elflings and as such, have many urges they do not understand. Poking fun at you is not what I would like them to find entertaining, yet as it stands, you are the only girl in the household near their age and you must grow a thicker skin." Lorinaura thought it was easy for her to say, she was not the brunt of all the harassment.

She had asked about Haldir. "He is much older than them. Why does he join in?"

Galadriel had replied, "Haldir, though he is older than you, is still not an adult." She sighed and hugged the elleth. "Sweetling, he will one day deeply regret this. They all will, most likely."

That little piece of knowledge had not helped her so far. Every day, they did this same sort of thing. This week alone, she ended up being bumped into the dirt and grass, leaving stains on her dress and oh, let us not forget the lake incident. Galadriel and Celeborn were not happy about them throwing her in the lake.

At least none of that stuff really hurt...only her pride, which waxed and waned day by day, anyway. Haldir came to her rescue most of the time, although today he was certainly in rare form as he was now greatly aiding their efforts. However, she did not dare tell on them. She tried that once and learned her lesson many times over.

Rúmil and Orophin ganged up on her one day, pushing her over the edge of the talan she used for studying. Celeborn, himself, built it for her as a reward for her studious behavior and apt memory. It was lower to the ground than most of the other talans, yet still high enough so any passerby who ventured outside the city could not see it. The two younger brothers snuck up on her one day as she was bending over to pick up a book and pushed her over the edge. If Haldir had not been beneath the tree, she would have certainly broken something. That, of course, meant he was in on the whole thing.

She immediately stomped off to Lord Celeborn who sent them to replace several blighted rose bushes in the Lady’s garden. The thorns scratched their hands terribly and Orophin actually fell into one of the plants, marring his face as well. That was all it took for them to start being truly relentless.

Another tug. "Why do you do that? You know I hate it, Phinny! Please, stop pulling my braids! It hurts!" she pleaded and then felt another tug from behind her. Haldir again.

"STOP PULLING MY HAIR!" she shouted through clenched teeth as she stood pointing her finger at all three in turn. "The next one who does it, I swear upon Elbereth herself, you will be so sorry! You will never see it coming, but I will not rest until I make you sorry!" She was near tears, again, making her even angrier.

"Lorinaura, do you think all that was necessary?" said Galadriel as she entered back into the library with their lesson for the day. Her face was serene, her voice, warm and pleasant, though Lorinaura could see nothing but disappointment in her eyes.

Of course, she would pick this particular moment to come back. 'The first time I stand up for myself all day and the Lady of Light walks in on the end of the conversation. Well, after seeing my finger wagging and all the shouting, how could she not take their side?' she rambled to herself. 'That is just what I need today.'

Even she had to admit it did look as if she was being quite irrational. Especially since Orophin, Rúmil and Haldir were staring at her as if she was addled and they had done nothing. 'Of course they are acting innocent,' she thought. 'What do you expect? They would not readily admit to anything. So why would the Lady think differently?'

How could they do this to her? They were supposed to be her friends. They claimed to be her brothers. They lived in the same home, sharing toys and beds, food and drinks. She had been so very nice to them since their parents left for the Undying Lands. Haldir even cried once for his mother and was it not she who put her arms around him for comfort?

With a deep breath, Lorinaura lowered her eyes to the floor, clasping her hands together. "My lady, I am sorry for the outburst." Looking out of the corner of her eye she could see Orophin's eyes just dancing with glee, yet his face was set with seriousness. Haldir and Rúmil were both snickering. She sighed. "It will not happen again within these walls."

"I should hope not and please, look into my eyes when we are speaking to one another, child," she said as she laid the books for the day's lesson onto Celeborn's desk. "It is not ladylike to shout Lorinaura, nor is it required in your current situation." Her frankness was a bit startling, yet Lorinaura could see a glint of knowingness in her eyes. "And elflings, if you insist upon pulling my favorite elleth's hair, I am going to come around and cut yours off. Do I make myself clear?"

"Yes, my lady," all three said in unison and if they had mustered the nerve to look away from Galadriel, they would have seen an utterly triumphant little elleth sitting quietly beside them.

"Now if you all could give me your attention, let us begin today's lessons with writing...in Quenyan."

Lorinaura wrote her name at the top of the page and then began taking down Galadriel's every word, beaming.

The young ellonin all groaned and Haldir put his index finger in his mouth to wet it. When he stuck it in Lorinaura's ear, she slapped his hand away in disgust, wiped the spit onto the sleeve of her dress with a great sigh, and thought, 'And he is supposed to be my favorite.'
