Questions & Quandaries -- Elf Style
Notes: between *and* are twin shared thoughts
The next day Elrohir cornered his brother in the library.
"So Ell, when do I get to hear your fantasy? Or would you rather tell it when Estel is also here to listen?"
"Hmmm. No actually, I think I’d like to surprise him with it."
"Oh that’s a good idea! Our Estel likes surprises" Elladan chuckled
"That he does, little brother. He certainly responded well to last nights surprise!"
"Mmm, very well. So then, what is it? You can tell me -- I don’t like surprises -- really I don’t!"
"Uh-huh, THAT was convincing" Elladan criticised "Ok. Do you recall the last time Estel upset Ada and he insisted that he had done nothing wrong? Remember he got very cheeky and said ‘Well, Ada, what are you going to do? I am too old to spank!’
My fantasy is proving how very wrong that statement is. You are NEVER too old to be spanked"
Just then there was a rush of feet, followed by raised voices approaching the library.
"What were you thinking Estel?"
"I’m sorry, Ada. It wasn’t what it seemed. Please forgive me?"
"Oh it wasn’t what it seemed? So you weren’t behaving like a reckless fool and putting your life in danger?"
"NO!... Well, yes...But not really! It’s complicated!!"
The voices faded out as Elrond and Estel passed the library, heading for Elrond’s study. The twins sat looking at eachother for a second before Elrohir burst out laughing.
"Oh, Ell. The Valar are smiling down on you today!! It looks like Estel is in need of ‘punishment’!"
"So it does, ‘Ro, so it does...Quickly lets go make sure Ada leaves enough of him for us to play with"
They strode rapidly towards the study, gave a quick knock on the door, then entered. Inside Elrond sat at his desk scowling at Estel who sat opposite him, a remorseful (yet slightly defiant) look on his face.
"Ada, Estel, what has happened? We heard raised voices. Is aught amiss?"
"Your brother" Elrond spat out "apparently decided that today would be a good day to die."
"But Ada--"
"Silence. Of all the reckless, foolhardy things he could have done , provoking Orophin into a knife-fight! Tell me Estel DO you have a death-wish, because if that is the case I am in the right frame of mind presently to grant that wish for you! Or
perhaps you just have some grudge against the march-warden and his brothers. DON’T give me that look Estel, I know you arranged that last tournament so you’d be competing against Haldir in the sword-fight!."
The twins looked at eachother in surprise. They hadn’t realised their brother was capable of such deviousness!
"Well Estel? Which is it? Death-wish or grudge?"
"Neither Ada! There were good reasons for both! I swear...B-but...I can’t tell you what they were" his voice had dropped to a whisper.
"So I am to just take your word for it?"
"Yes Ada"
"Well I am afraid that will not suffice, Estel. If you have nothing to say in your own defence, then your punishment will proceed on the grounds that this was a completely reckless act with intent to cause harm to a friend of this house."
"So be it" whispered the young man, clearly deeply upset though resolute.
"Ada" Elladan interrupted. "Could I pleapeakpeak to you a moment -- in private?"
"Right now Elladan?" Elrond asked in annoyance
"It’s important Ada" he insisted
"Fine. Estel wait outside a moment. Elrohir you wait with him. I do not wish to have to go chasing after him on top of everything else"
"Yes Ada" They agreed in unison as they tuned to leave the room, door closing firmly behind them.
"Well Elladan? What was so important it couldn’t wait until I’d finished with your brother?"
"I think there is more to Estel’s story than he is telling us"
"Well, obviously! How ever did I manage to raise such an astute elf! Such brilliant powers of deduction! Remind me to assign you to negotiations the next time those duplicitous advisers of Thranduil arrive, contracts in hand -- it might save me time, money and hair loss! Honestly Elladan he as much as said himself that there was more to the story...he just didn’t want to say what!"
"I wasn’t fin-- hair loss?"
"You hadn’t noticed?"
"Well, I didn’t want to say anything..."
"Ahhh it seems my son has finally learned restraint, will wonders never cease?"
"Funny Ada. Clearly I--"
"Enough of this Elladan!" Elrond interrupted. "What did you wish to say to me?"
"Right well, clearly Estel is not going to tell you, but as you know ‘Ro and I have always been his confidants. Perhaps we can get him to tell us, then convince him to come to you with his story. It may be important"
Elrond considered this for a moment then conceded that his son was right. Estel was far more likely to open up to the twins than himself. There was also the fact that whilst the young mortal could occasionally be reckless (as youths often are) he was not the type to provoke such deadly incidents without good reason.
"Very well Elladan. You have 24 hours. Oh and my son..." his face softened and he gently cupped the twins face leaning forwards to gently bestow a kiss upon his forehead. "good luck -- I have a feeling you may need it. That is one stubborn mortal we are raising." He sighed and released Elladan.
"Thankyou, Ada, but I don’t need luck. I have something much better" He said as he moved towards the door.
"Oh really? And what, pray tell, is this amazing quality?"
"My winning personality, deadly charms and breathtakingly stunning self, of course."
And so saying he slipped out of the study to the sound of Elrond’s roar of laughter, glad that he had been able to lighten the elder elf’s mood (albeit at the price of his ego). As he stalked over to where Elrohir and Estel stood waiting he quickly schooled his features into hard lines and thought to himself: Let the games begin...
