Tracy hated small talk. She was no good at it.
What really sucked is she never thought she had to with Elijah. He was always so energetic and talkative and funny. Conversation was never strained with Elijah. He could be shockingly quiet one minute or talking you into the ground the next. She loved the debates they would have about music. How he thought her definition of “great music” was way too broad, while she thought his insanest est to find and champion the most obscure bands in existence was, well, insane. It was a debate they revisited often, one that was constantly rekindled without warning.
Today, Elijah was very quiet.
Tracy prattled on about the American Grammy awards and Dave Grohl as she delicately painted the flesh colors around his ankles. She enjoyed this part. The paint gave her a contact high. And she loved being on the floor, on her knees, close to the ground, the carpet. It’s inexplicable to her how much she loves being close to the ground. It was another point she and Elijah bonded over. His character, Frodo, was always falling down, collapsing, getting pushed aside. They shared a twisted joke of giving a small pig snort whenever one would walk pass the other, because they were both utterly filthy at the end of the day.
There were lots of quiet intimate relationships on the set. Tracy didn’t have intimate relationships, private jokes to snicker about. Partly this was because she had always been the "strange one" and was unable to keep a circle of real friends, mostly these days because she was the youngest member of the prosthetics crew. She was happy to find Elijah. He was a godsend, because he too was a little weird and quite young compared to the other actors. But mostly, she cherished their bonding of music and mud because he was just a cool guy. She felt safe to be herself around him in a way that she never had before.
Tracy chats on, declaring that one of the Rolling Stones has got to drop dead eventually, while Elijah sits, silently watching his feet and ankles slowly blend into the skin tone of his shins.
She had seen him tired before, but never like this. Never without that spark of joy, of wistfulness.
She avoids speaking of the obvious. What she’s really thinking. That she had heard it once, but now knows it’s true. That when a person gets hurt, really hurt, the emotional wounds are slow to heal.
Elijah was one day out of the hospital, but Tracy felt he had not returned to work at all.

Elijah recoiled wildly, involuntarily, the moment Sean reached out to touch his arm. No one in the room was sure of what was going on. Least of all Elijah.
“I’m sorry. I’m tired,” Elijah said mechanically. His own voice sounded strange to him, as if he were trying to convince himself as well. He didn’t notice that he had begun to tremble. He concentrated, and spoke again. “I’m sorry, I’m… I’m really tired.”
“How about we let you get some rest?”
The voice came from the white coat behind his friends.
“Yeah, get some rest.” Sean leaned in and touched Elijah’s face briefly.
~~Cold fingertips. Sean’s hands had never been cold before. He’s the warmest, kindest person I ever... ~~
Sean’s hand drifted away and grasped Elijah shoulder gently. Stepping back he said, “We’ll see you later.”
“Tomorrow.” The doctor pronounced behind them.
Dom whirls around agitated. “Tomorrow? Fucking hell-”
“Easy Dom.”
~~Before what? Never cold before… what?~~
“Billy, you know he doesn’t like to be alone. Doc, he really doesn’t like to be alone.”
“He won’t be alone.”
“Tomorrow.” Sean’s tone seemed to end all discussion. He hesitantly turned from Elijah.
Elijah didn’t see the look Sean gave Dominic, but he did see Dom was reduced by it. All protest drained from Dom’s face. He stepped forward and tugged quickly at Elijah’s finger. “Be good. We’ll see you tomorrow.”
Dom turned and left the room. He was instantly replaced by Billy. “You have yourself a good rest.” Grinning, Billy yanks his finger as well, then quietly leaves the room.
“See you tomorrow man.” His face gently lined with worry, Sean musters a smile and, following a brief yank of Elijah's index finger, leaves the hospital room.
