Between Both Horizons

Between Both Horizons

There was once a time I could tell you that there was no way in Mordor I would fade from a broken heart. It was a ridiculous idea. Pathetic really. What would hurt my heart so much it would make me fade? That was when I was inexperienced. I had not seen the great war. I had not heard warriors I was raise with scream with the last of their immortal breath. So much pain and death for so small a thing. I almost resented Aragorn because of the blood that ran through his veins. Isildur is responsible for so much anguish. I damn Isildur not Aragorn. That war made an impression on me. To be exact, a scar. I am fading and I thought I would be angry if it ever happened. In truth, I am grateful. Middle earth has so many memories and so much anger. I fade unsatisfied. I have lived long enough but known love only once. He was taken like the waves of the sea. My King. By the Valar I am pathetic. Nice Prince. A sniveling weakling. Goodbye.

The King and Queen were joyfully sitting side by side as the dinner the servants had created was displayed. The dinner was extravagant, again. The table was filled with meat, vegetables and breads from different cultures. Arwen smiled and clasped her hands together. “Thank you Demetrius.” Arwen took up her plate and gathered some vegetables that were cooking in a mild vinaigrette. Aragorn smiled as he bit into a large chicken leg and then into a piece of bread. Arwen was nibbling on her broccoli when her eyes glazed over. She saw Legolas lying in the tower. Why is her there? Evenstar noticed his face was much paler then it should have been. Then he gasped out and screamed. His heart breaking and then he went limp. Her smile which was long diminished turned downward as her eyes saw the passing of another elf and her hands grabbed the green cloth covering the dining table as tears fell from her ivory cheeks. Arwen‘s breath hitched. “Someone is not coming to dinner, my love.”

Aragorn gazed at bea beautiful wife in fear. “Who?”

“He is fading into shadow.” She raise her delicate hands to her rose petal lips and gasped as the elf‘s face was again shown to her. His crystal blue eyes empty and his hair lacking the normal glow. His face lax and his body motionless. “Legolas…”

Estel’s emerald eyes widened. “What?! Where is he Arwen?”

“In the tower…” Her voice trembled. “Hurry…”

Before she could utter another word, the King was out of his padded court chair and dashing up the stairs. Gimli was tottering into the dining hall. The dwarf saw Aragorn looking beyond him like something was wrong. In too short a time he notice the King didn't see him and jumped to his left hitting the wall. He watched Aragorn disappear with a raised eyebrow. "Okay..." He smelt food and his thoughts soon turned to the dinner. He jumped up and ran into the hall but stopped abruptly seeing Arwen’s tears. “My Lady? What's the matter?”

Her eyes slowly met his. She wondered if she should tell the loud dwarf. “Legolas is dying…” She breathed out just above a whisper. She had decided he should know. Legolas being his best friend and all.

“WHAT?!” Gimli huffed. “The elf isn’t leaving that easily!” Gimli raced after Aragorn, knowing that is where the King was going. Arwen had put her hand up to stop him but it was lost onto the back of the dwarf.

Aragorn got to Legolas’s door. He knocked lightly. “Legolas…? Are you there my friend?” He heard footsteps down the hall and turned ready to draw his sword. A short red haired, bushy bearded head came into view. Gimli. He shook his head and his hand that was ready to draw the sword was now knocking readily. “Open this door now, Legolas!”

“Let me.” Gimli’s hard voice rolled. Aragorn stepped aside. Gimli took his axe in his hands and brought it against the door. In three chops the door was down and Aragorn was stepping inside. He waited for his eyes to adjust. In the moonlight he saw a figure on the bed. “Legolas…” The figure moved. He let out a breath he didn’t notice he was holding. He was glad his friend wasn't dead. “Legolas, are you alright?”

“Come on Legolas, we are going down to have dinner. Come with us.” Aragorn prompted by extending his hand towards the figure.

“That’s enough, Aragorn. I‘ve lived this long, its enough.” A tear reflected by the moonlight fell silently to the pillow below. “I have been very tired…I am not allowed to exist, so just let me be.” Aragorn reached his arms out and gathered the crying elf in his arms. “Aragorn?” Leaf’s weak voice shook out.

“Well, you can exist just for the ones that love you.” Aragorn smiled. "We all love you."

“I don’t want to be alone anymore! Give me a place to exist! The only place is here…then its only to be with you.” Aragorn released the crying elf from his arms and shook his head. “Can I stay with you?” Estel gazed out the window.

“I am sorry my friend…I cannot grant that. My heart has already been given to another.” He peered into the tearstained crystalline eyes and he could no longer be in this room. His heart was hurting too much. He couldn't give something to the elf that he had given to another. He turned and left the shaking Leaf on the rotting cot. Shining teary blue eyes glanced at Gimli who stood in shock.

“Goodbye…” Legolas fell to the bed unmoving.

Gimli, still being in shock didn’t know what to do. He sauntered over to the ethereal being and touched Legolas’ cold cheek. “Elf?” Gimli grabbed the elf’s shoulders and shook with much force. “Elf! No…” Gimli peered at Leaf. “Wake up, immortal. You cannot die.” Gimli began to cry, for the second time in his life.
